Slow NPM & SAM access

I have SAM module installed on a 2008R2 server. Logon times were good but since adding the NPM module logon times are quite slow. Event to bring up the initial logon page is taking time. I noted when NPM was installed on its own on another server access was also slow. Any ideas what is causing this?
