I realize this is not a Microsoft forum, however, I also know there is a plethora of knowledge here, so...
Yesterday, our Solarwinds server stopped. (Orion Platform 2013.2.1, NCM 7.2.2, NPM 10.6.1, NTA 4.0.0, IVIM 1.9.0)
All 3 servers have 6 cores and 32GB RAM each.
MS SERVER 2012 with MSSQL Server 2012
More specifically, our database server stopped...
Even more specifically, on our database server, the MSSQL service stopped.
We have NPM/NCM/NTA installed on server1, NTA/NCM storage installed on server 2, and the database installed on server 3.
All 3 servers were able to see, and communicate with each other during this issue. (first troubleshooting steps taken)
Once I knew all the servers were up and visible to each other, I started looking into the SQL server. (Our Solarwinds server is the only thing that communicates with this SQL server)
After a little bit of looking around, I noticed the MSSQL service had stopped. I restarted the service, and NPM appeared to start working again.
We did call Solarwinds Support, just in case, however, after a little bit of looking around, they told us it was a Microsoft thing. (Don't you just love it when vendors point the finger to other vendors...)
I could believe this, if it were not for trying to pawn it off on other things first. For example, after only looking at it for a few minutes, we were told the problem was because the server was out of storage. Oddly enough, that server still had 121Gb+ of storage remaining. After I pointed that out, then the finger instantly pointed to Microsoft...
Anyway, what I would like to know from the collective brain trust is, what troubleshooting steps, and/or tools, do the smarties use for fast, accurate, and efficient troubleshooting of MSSQL database/server issues?
I looked at the logs for Solarwinds and SQL Server, but I just do not know what to really look for, what is important and what is normal. It would be nice to know that on line xx of Solarwinds log ABC, it shows a relation to line yy of MSSQL log DEF.
Again, I know this is not the best place to ask, content wise, however, I am sure it is the best place to ask user/knowledge wise...
Thank you for any help/info/advice,
-Will
