Why are my alarms silent?

We have a dedicated screen in our IT department that displays a NOC view of our infrastructure. The PC is just running Linux, with Firefox as the browser. This works ok for displaying the status, but I'm keen to get some form of alarm sound if a node goes down. Now, I know there are various posts about this, but there is no conclusive answer. For some, it seems to work, others not. The Linux box we're using has speakers attached, and alarms worked well on the old (Cacti) system. We're using a dedicated NPM account for this task that has the alert feature enabled, but if a node does go down, the system doesn't make a sound.

Am I missing a setting somewhere? Is there a plugin required for the browser (I'd heard mention of Shockwave Flash being required).

Help appreciated.
