I am in the process of setting up Palo Alto Network Insight.

I have successfully downloaded the running config of one of my Palo Alto devices, but each time I go into the Policies tab for that node I see the following:

Cannot show policy data until configs have been downloaded. Go here to download configs.

I have tried the following download config commands:

show config running

show running security-policy

And I have had the same issue each time.  Does anybody know which config SolarWinds needs to display data in the policies tab.

Thank you,

Matthew.

Manually create SNOW ticket from Solarwinds alarm

$

Hi.  For the geniuses out there.

We have the Solarwinds to ServiceNow integration application setup and are reviewing to see if it meets our requirements.

We have a number of alerts with actions to create a Service Now ticket. (Working fine)

However we have a few nodes that have no actions. (ie When it alarms, it doesn't auto create a ticket) However we would like to manually create a Service Now ticket on some occasions. Is there a way to do this by a simple right click (per se) or does it all have to be created in alerts and actions.(which is static and consistent)

Unknown status reporting as unavailable

Hello,

Is there any way for the unknown status (that is caused by problems with Orion engine and not by unavailability of the nodes) not to count for the availability metric?

We've got groups with 100% weekly availability but when we generate a weekly availability report it says 99,8% or 99,7% for example.

Here is an example of this situation, state changes and impact on the availability of the last 24h

Thanks all

Creating a Widget which displays Interface errors

I have tried to create a widget, which can be used in a NOC view, that displays the Top xx Interfaces with errors. Nothing special, just the errors that can be seen when you do a "show interface" command.

But it seems that i can't get the needed informations out of the Database..

I am amazed that there is no widget or predefined alarm there anyway, or have i missed it somewhere.

Anyway, i have attached the script that i am playing around. And here is an example what i get:

My first Problem is that i get all interfaces displayed and not only the once i have trouble with and secondly the errors doesn't match the actual interface errors.

Whenn i do a display command on the above interface i don't habe any errors at all.

Can anybody help me to get this right? Or does anybody know a widget with equal display?

Multicast Top 10 Widget - Issue ?

Typically we don't monitor multicast traffic by default on our network nodes, but a few of them appear to have slipped the net, will sort these eventually, however the Top 10 Widget for Multicast traffic in our network has produced some interesting results. (See below)

Multicast Top 10

Can anyone let me know if these values are 'current' or 'cumulative' as having over 245 Pbps is a LOT of traffic, the smaller ones i could understand.

Just concerned that if these values are current, I need to start looking at where all the multicast traffic is coming from.

Displaying Port Names for Brocade Switches

All our ports on our Brocade switches are named.  After adding the devices the port name doesn't display.

Any tips or trick to make this happen?  I'd prefer to see: Port 0/78 - <port name> instead of Port 0/78 - FC port 0/78.

Thanks

Agent - high latency

NPM 11.5, Orion 2015.1.0

We've got a server in our DMZ that we switched to using the agent (v 1.1.726) to monitor, instead of just snmp.  Latency reported for the node is now crazily high.  NPM reports that the average response time for the node is around 200-300ms.  Just pinging the box, responses come back in 1ms with the occasional bump up to 2 or even (*gasp*) 3ms.  Anyone know what it is about the agent that makes the response time look so bad when the actual response time for snmp and the website on this server is much much lower?

Monitor Cisco ISE appliance in SolarWinds

$

So you wanna add your ISE appliance in SolarWInds and monitor it via SNMPv3. Sounds straight forward enough, right? Well, not so much.

Here’s how I got my ISE appliances added to SolarWinds.

First you need to access the CLI of your ISE appliance.

You can view SNMP info in the CLI using this command: sh run | inc snmp

You need to add in your SNMP if it isn’t already enabled.

Go into config mode then run:

snmp-server enable

Next you will need to know your ‘EngineID’. This is the EngineID in SolarWinds.

This can be found by going to your SolarWinds main server.

Open SolarWinds Database Manager

Drill down in the SolarWinds DB and look for “AllEngines”

Execute the query there and it will display your EngineID.

(Or you can run this as a SQL query: SELECT TOP 1000 * FROM [dbo].[AllEngines])

Once you have your EngineID you need to go back to your ISE CLI

Get back in enable mode and run:

snmp-server engineID 0x2

(this assumes your EngineID is ‘2’)

Your EngineID must be put in HEX format.

Next you need to enter in your SNMPv3 creds

snmp-server host [IP ADDRESS OF YOUR SW SERVER] version 3 [SNMPv3 USERNAME] 0x2 plain authpassword privpassword

(You can use hash instead of plain if you wish)

Also:

snmp-server user [SNMPv3 USERNAME] v3 plain authpassword privpassword

(Again, you can use hash instead of plain here)

So now you need to exit out of enable mode and wr mem

You may want to verify your edits by running sh run | inc snmp again

Once you have your creds in your ISE appliance(s), now we have to get them into SolarWinds.

Now, here’s the REAL trick.

Instead of manually ADDING the node into SolarWInds, you need to do a Network Discovery for your nodes.

You can run the discovery on just the IP address or range of IP’s your ISE appliances are on.

To do this, go to: Settings > Network Discovery

Click on ‘Add New Discovery’

Follow the wizard and do a scan on either the individual IP addresses of each node one at a time, or enter the IP subnet the appliances are on.

The discovery should pick up the appliances and add them as managed nodes using SNMPv3

I ran into this issue and had to open a ticket with Cisco TAC. We messed with this for far too long. We kept manually adding the nodes and they would fail to use SNMPv3. Once we did a network discovery, using the exact same creds, it just worked.

I hope this helps someone avoid the headache of getting your ISE appliances monitored by SolarWinds.

Centralized Upgrade Error

$

Hi Everyone,

I have a fairly large environment consisting of 25 APEs and 25 HA APEs. These APEs span across different datacenters across the globe. When attempting to do the centralized upgrade to 2019.4 I am running into an issue on several of the APEs.

The APEs will first state "Downloading installers...2%" along with the KB/s of which it is downloading. But that's where they stop. After several minutes they will fail out with the following error.

An error was encountered while downloading updates:

Can't download file https://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/CatalogResources/Core/2019.4/2019.4.5220.20161/CoreInstaller.msi, because of the invalid checksum: 38385A81664CE562A6777FA4564AE7B93F38F1224E1206550136E2B6B5DBB9DD for file C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Downloads\CORE-2019.4.5220.20161-CoreInstaller.msi

I've already tried to retry the download and the same thing happens.

So I remoted into one of the servers having the issue and pasted the URL from the error message;

https://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/CatalogResources/Core/2019.4/2019.4.5220.20161/CoreInstaller.msi

and I were able to download it with no problem across the internet.

So on the problem APE I navigated to the file location displayed in the error message;

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Downloads\CORE-2019.4.5220.20161-CoreInstaller.msi

I deleted the file that was currently present and then clicked retry again on the web console. After a few minutes, the file appeared and even though the percentage on the web console stated 2% the file size was growing, slowly but the percentage never changed.

I also verified if I was able to navigate to my Primary Polling Engine from the troubled APE and I was able to with no issues.

All of the 14 APEs that completed the upgrade successfully were in fact located in the same Datacenter as my Primary Polling Engine. So I started checking the latency between the APE and Primary and yes some had some high latency but there were also several that were under 30ms and those also failed.

I am drawing a blank on this and any help would be great

OrionSDK - Node Interface URI not working

$

I'm trying to read and eventually update node interface custom properties via Python and the OrionSDK. From my understanding according to SolarWinds' very own URI documentation, the interface URI should be swis://abcdef/Orion/Orion.Nodes/NodeID=1/Interfaces/. However, when attempting to read this URI, I keep getting an HTTP error that appears to say that the URI doesn't exist. Here's the Python code I'm working with:

======================================================================================

import requests

from orionsdk import SwisClient

def main():

  requests.packages.urllib3.disable_warnings()

  server = 'NPM_SERVER
   username = 'ADMIN_USER'
   password = 'ADMIN_PASS'

   swis = SwisClient(server, username, password)

   print("Custom Property Update Test:")

  results = swis.query(

   "SELECT Uri FROM Orion.Nodes WHERE NodeID=@id",
   id=3007
   )

  uri = results['results'][0]['Uri']

  obj = swis.read(uri + "/Interfaces")

   print(obj)

if __name__ =="__main__":

  main()

======================================================================================

And here's the error I'm getting:

requests.exceptions.HTTPError: 400 Client Error: Invalid key properties specified for entity Orion.NPM.Interfaces.

Parameter name: filter for url: https://NPM_SERVER:17778/SolarWinds/InformationService/v3/Json/swis:/NPM_SERVER/Orion/Orion.Nodes/NodeID=3007/Interfaces

As mentioned previously, all I'm trying to do at this point is print out the interfaces on the node and, eventually, set those interface custom properties. Any help and guidance to start this process would be great. Thank you!

NPM 2019.4 IS NOW GENERALLY AVAILABLE!

$
0
0

It is my pleasure to announce that Network Performance Monitor (NPM) 2019.4 is now available and can be downloaded from the Customer Portal.

What's New in NPM 2019.4?

  • Device View - Visually display your network switches on Cisco 2960 and Juniper devices to check port status, utilization, and position from the Orion Web Console.
  • Real-time Charts - Display real-time data with new dashboard widgets:
    • CPU Load and Memory Utilization on Node Details.
    • Percent Utilization on Interface Details.
  • Performance Improvements - Check out the improved load times for widgets.
  • Updated Localization - Improved support for German and Japanese languages.
  • Improved Port-type Mapping - Discover port types with more accuracy.

Device View

Device View allows you to see the physical layout of your network switch's interfaces (except management or console) in order to check port status, utilization, and position from the Orion Web Console. It is being released in NPM 2019.4 as a "technical preview", meaning we haven't added enough functionality to deem it a full-fledged feature. In this case, the limiting factor comes in the form of vendor support.

NPM 2019.4 includes Device View support for the majority of switches in the following families (provided they're not in a "stacked" configuration):

  • Cisco Catalyst 2960
  • Cisco Catalyst 2960L
  • Cisco Catalyst 2960S
  • Cisco Catalyst 2960X
  • Cisco Catalyst 2960XR
  • Juniper EX2200
  • Juniper EX3300

In order for Device View to be available in the web console, the supported switch will need to be monitored as an SNMP node.

Once monitored, you'll be able to access the new subview from the Node Details page.

Device View can be filtered using the filter list on the left side of the page. Currently, you can filter the interfaces based on status. Interfaces that do not match the selected filters become opaque.

Device View also provides a side panel with additional interface details. This is not visible by default. To view the side panel, click on any interface in the Device View stencil. The side panel displays the caption of the interface, it's IP address, MAC address, duplex mode, and more.

Real-Time Charts

With NPM 2019.4, we're also releasing our first set of widgets that provide real-time data!

Real-time CPU Load & Memory Usage will now appear by default in the top-right position of the Node DetailsVital Stats page.

Real-time interface Percent Utilization will similarly appear in the top-right position of the Interface DetailsSummary page.

These charts can also be added via the Add Widget panel on other appropriate views.

The Chart Refresh Time update interval for real-time data charts is set to 2 seconds by default. This can be changed in two ways:

  • Via the Web Console Settings page:

  • Via the Advanced Configuration page:

The polling settings are tied to PerfStack, and can be adjusted on the Advanced Configuration page in PerfStack settings.

Improved Port Type Mapping

This feature provides information which can be used for filtering interfaces by port type during the discovery process. The changes we've made are primarily on the backend, but you may notice some minor UI tweaks.

Performance Improvements

NPM 2019.4 includes many improvements to web performance. We think you'll notice a difference in how fast the pages load.

Updated Localization

NPM 2019.4 includes improved support for the Japanese and German languages.

What now?

Node Downtime with Duration and Minimum Length Filtering

**REQUIRES ORION PLATFORM 2018.2 OR ABOVE**

I had assembled this based on a much older SQL report, and then updated it to SWQL, then added some more intelligence to it so you can filter it based on the duration of the outage, search by the device names, and it has a method of letting you know when nodes have been down so long they aged out of the events table.

Based on popular requests I figured it was time to put it out here to make it easier for the Thwackers to find and use.  This is intended to be used inside the Custom Query Resource

, isnull(tostring(t2.[Down Event]),concat('Greater than ',(SELECT CurrentValue FROM Orion.Settings where settingid='SWNetPerfMon-Settings-Retain Events'),' days ago')) as [Down Event]
-- shows the timestamp of the up event, unless the object is still down
, isnull(tostring(t2.[Up Event]),'Still Down') as [Up Event]
-- figures out the minutes between the down and up events, if the object is still down it counts from the down event to now, displays 99999 if we cannot accurately determine the original downtime, and

What is Receive and Transmit?

Hi there,

             When I looked at a interface in a chart report, I saw two words were "receive" and " transmit" for average interface utilization. I'm wondering if it's same as download and upload? If I have another chart regarding to the average gbps download and upload from the interface. Will the two charts be identical? Thank you!!

Monitor Time of Network Devices

Hi there,

            I'm planning to use solarwinds to monitor the time of the network devices and ntp server. I setup ntp server on a windows server, and all network devices sync time from it. I would like to monitor if the ntp server is accurate as well as all switches and routers. Since i haven't been working on it before, I would like to obtain your expertise and I also did some research by myself first.

     This is what I'm planning to do:

1. For windows server, Monitor NTP. Will the NTP server be external source and node will be our ntp server? I also don't see the optiones of Clock Drift (Internet Time Service) or Clock Drift (NTP).

2. For cisco devices, I'm thinking to use universal device poller with NTP Best Practice. Which objects should I use from Cisco NTP MIB?

      Is there any better and easy to do it? Thank you!!

Is there a way to run a report in Solarwinds that would show nodes with over 5% average packet loss in the last 24 hours?

Please someone say yes

Thanks in advance!!

Simple Troubleshooting

$

I can easily use SolarWinds to find issues when I have an idea of the equipment that I need to look at or an alert gets fired off.

Sometimes, we get requests to determine if we saw any issues during a period of time in the past with a specific system or any network equipment that the system uses. I may not always know which equipment to look at.

Does anybody have a series of steps that they perform looking at NPM, SAM, etc. to determine if they had an issue in the past?

Right now, I look at the Events Manager, I hone in on some of the equipment that should have been involved. If I do not see a problem, then I go back to the customer with that info. However, I always feel like I am missing some info that I should be bringing to the table whether they had an issue or not.

'Interface not up' Alert Questions

$

I am new to using SW, and looking for some guidance on an issue we are having with an alert that is set to trigger when it sees an interface on any of our network devices changes from the 'Up' state. It is triggering for some reason unknown to us, and we will get batches of them throughout the day, anywhere from six to 140 at a time. It happens on routers, switches, firewalls, and other types of devices. There does not seem to be a pattern to the timing.

It is set to alert on Interface. The scope is set to 'Network' device types. The trigger condition is when an interface status changes, and it is not equal to Up. I was told that we used to have it set to 'interface is equal to Down' but that was not fully working for us, like it was missing some.

Looking through Events, I was unable to find the ones correlating to these, but maybe I was doing something wrong or just not seeing them.

I am sure there is a bunch of necessary details I am leaving out, but if someone is able to help, it would be hugely appreciated, and will do my best to provide more information.

Thank you!

Why i need SQL SA level account credentials for Configuration Wizard

In this article you will learn the process or requirements for SQL credentials during Orion Configuration wizard to connect the application with SQL server and logic behind the process .

Stage # 1.

In the configuration wizard 1st step , we need to use a "sa" account (recommended) the logic behind that is the "sa" account is the member of sysadmin role , & therefore "sa" & sysadmin roles are the members of  dbcreator server role by default.

In the meantime you can also use the Windows authentication account (as far as that account is a member of dbcreator server role).

The reason we use high privileged account on the 1st step so we can access the SQL server without any security issues and as mentioned the sa account is a member of dbcreator server role by default (who have privileges to create a new database within SQL server)

Stage # 2
Now in the 2nd step of configuration wizard you simply select to create a new database (SolarWindsOrion) name of the orion database. Or an existing migrated Database

Stage # 3
Finally in the 3rd option you have to create a new "SQL authentication account" called "SolarWindsOrionDatabaseUser" the logic behind to create this account (it is just a public account that have read/write access to the Orion database) and nothing other then that, for day to day activities.Its not feasible as security point of view to use the "sa" account to access the Orion database,as this account has far more privileges and therefore not suitable in a day to day scenario.

I have already created SQL account for Orion where i can use it in configuration wizard ?

So if you do have already 3rd option account created you can simply use that account while connecting to the SQL Database on 1st step

Common Issues:

I have created database using same configuration wizard and failed to connect to the other database i have just created why ?

I am unable to switch my Database ?

I am running an upgrade and Configuration Wizard not moving ahead (Multiple Polling Engine Detected ) after connecting to the Orion DB why ?

You Ran Orion Configuration Wizard > Created Brand new database (Database-1) then created another Database using the Configuration Wizard (Database-2)

Now you wish to change the Database-2 to Database-1 and failed with an Error.

ERROR SceneContainer - SceneContainer:bntNext_Click: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): VIEW SERVER STATE permission was denied on object 'server', database 'master'.

The user does not have permission to perform this action.

The reason User account permission to go the SQL Server > and check the User permissions and default database assigned to the user . (Please contact your DBA) and make sure the account does have proper permissions as explained above

Further your DBA can change the default database as required by the application to use.

So the user can create the DB - (DB Creator Role ) but he cannot change the default database assigned to the user .

User needs more permissions to make changes into the DB - Please use the Step #1 and use the sa account let the Configuration wizard create the Orion user account with appropriate permissions.

Or contact your DBA for any further changes with user permissions.
