SNMP Polling Meraki Devices (NPM 11.0.1) - How To

$

Background:

Thousands of Meraki devices needed to be added to Solarwinds for my situation, and so the hunt began.  First stop was Meraki for some help, which led me to this document: https://docs.meraki.com/download/attachments/13500458/ConfigurationGuide-Meraki-SolarwindsSNMP%20(2).pdf?version=1&modif…  The document's instructions weren't for the implementation that I was looking for, and that document was all I could find in online.  What I needed was to poll the devices directly instead of through the dashboard.  When I followed Meraki's document for alerting, it wasn't what I was looking for.  Passing relevant information to the alerts wasn't available, based on Meraki's instructions.  Eventually, I accidentally stumbled upon the answer, and now looking back it seems so simple .

How-To Steps:

  • On the SolarWinds Network Discovery page, create a new discovery
  • Use the SNMP string that was input on each Meraki network under Network-wide>General or Configure>Alerts & administration (located on Meraki's dashboard) and click ‘next’
    • SNMP settings include the version (V1/V2c), and a SNMP string.  They are located under 'Reporting'
    • Meraki SNMP.png
  • Uncheck ‘poll for VMware’ and click next
  • Uncheck ‘add to NCM’ and click next
  • Click ‘next’ on the windows credentials page
  • Paste in your Meraki IPs and click on ‘next’
  • Set the Discovery name and click on ‘next’
  • Set your discovery schedule and click on ‘discover’
  • Select the Meraki device interfaces you’d like to import and click ‘next’
    • Selecting the advanced options section can help for picking out specific interfaces.
  • Click ‘next’ on the volume type page.
  • Click ‘import’ on the import preview page.
    • Wait for the import to finish before clicking on ‘finish’

Results:

Here's a Meraki MX80 that's been added.

MX80 SW Node.png

Here's an MR16 that's been added:

MR16 SW Node.png

After the nodes have been added, I setup alerts and they'll be able to pull helpful information (Hostname, IP, Custom Properties, etc.) when an event happens.

Misc. Info:

Version info: NPM 11.0.1

Devices I've tested:

Firewalls

MX80

MX400

Wireless Access Points

MR16

MR18

Switches

MS22P

Current issues:

From the screenshots you can see that the Last Boot date isn't correct, however that isn't a pressing issue for me.

I hope this will help some of you, and feel free to ask questions.

I'll be adding updates as more info comes in, so feel free to post what you have run into.

Has anyone successfully added Cisco/Meraki MR34 access points to Solarwinds NPM and had them correctly recognized as a wireless access point?  I've tried adding them and they come up as an unknown device.

Thanks,

Feature Suggestion Rehashed - Trending

I am pretty sure I have mentioned it before but since I am getting hammered for it from my bosses at work I am going to rehash the topic.

I think one thing that Orion sorely lacks is trending.  In my mind it should be the next logical step for the product.

For example, being able to write a report or an alert that might be something like:

alert or report on any drive that has experienced 50% or more growth in the last month

alert or report on any server that has been using 25% ore more RAM in the last month

alert or report on any interface that has gone up in bandwidth usage by 25% in the last month

Not only would this be a HUGE deal for me and my company but I think it would bring the product forward

How does one go about removing the Help link from a View in NPM?

I'm building an extremely limited NPM view to show Down Nodes only to certain users.  I don't want to allow users to browse the Help files for NPM.

I've searched and browsed Thwack for the method to accomplish this, but have not found an elegant solution.

In one user's case, they ended up pointing the link to a blank page or blank icon.  Not the right way to do this, IMHO.

Another user's query for this exact functionality was unanswered after several years.

How would you remove the Help link from the view?

Polling Cisco Devices - memory alarms reporting falsely

Hi Everyone,

I have a situation where we have a bbr reporting in solar winds as 99% when we log into the device it is only at 69% and can't figure out why. I first moved the device to another poller and it took 20 minutes for it to update and then 10 minutes later reporting at 99% again and I logged into the device it is at 69%.

I am trying to understand why it is taking so long for the graph and the alert to clear.

Example 9:59 it alerted saying 99% memory

10:24 alerts say it is down to 49% but when I checked at 10:17 am it still said it was at 69% not 99%.

Hi geeks,

Have you ever added HP P6350 to NPM through SNMPv3?

If yes,can you please share actual screenshots how to do it?  I cant get HP Storage ,but other devices can be added with ease.Probably SNMP needs to be configured correctly, but I try based on guides, but in vain

UnDP Table Count?

I'm very new to NPM.  What I'm trying to create is an alert that will let me know if my VPN tunnel is not complete.  I have created a UnDP that is giving me the raw data to work with it looks like this:

What I want to do now is count how many rows have the data I'm looking for, for example 4237.21D2 would count 5 in my example above, then have SolarWinds alert me if that count is ever less than 5.  Is there a way to accomplish this?

Thanks!

where is the server advanced alert manager?

Did the advanced alert manager move to web page only in the newer version of NPM and SAM? When I tried to open it on the server it opened the web page.

"netstat" statistics

Hey everyone,

I am still learning solar winds and some questions have come up to me and I don't have the knowledge to answer them, so I am hoping someone on here as ran into this and can give some support.

Ok, one of the users wanted to know if :

Can SNMP monitoring of the CBM and the CMT gather “netstat” statistics?

Meaning:

netstat –an |grep  162

netstat -an | grep 10023

   # netstat -an |grep 10023

  1. 172.25.15.7.10023 172.24.225.52.47763 5888 0 49232 0 FIN_WAIT_2
  2. 172.25.15.7.10023 172.24.225.53.48746 5888 0 49232 0 FIN_WAIT_2
  3. 172.25.15.7.10023 172.24.225.52.46878 5888 0 49232 0 TIME_WAIT

The other question is about expect script and can it be done:

I have a port we are trying to monitor (10023) and I have tried to set up a port monitor for it and it fails. I verified the port is correct, so here is the question from the ones who want it monitored.

SolarWind Component Installation/Configuration Advice

$

Hi Freindz,

We have to install below Solar Wind Components for our Network:-

1) Kiwi Syslog Server v9 - Single Install-9.5.0

2) Orion Netflow Traffic Analyzer - SL2000-4.1.1

3) Orion Network Configuration Manager v7 - DL1000-7.4.0

4) Orion Network Performance Monitor SL2000-11.5.2

5) Orion IP Address Manager - IP16000-4.3.0

Since we just have basic idea and not familiar about that installation , configuration of SolarWind components , requesting below advice or documents (Component wise)-

-> Standard Pre-Requisite for all components (i.e hardware configuration, storage Space etc)

-> Standard Implementation plan for all components.

-> details of tcp/udp ports which need to be open for these components.

-> Devices identification or configuration process on Solar Wind post installation of each component.

-> recommended log retention period. etc

And at last, You can also add other critical / helpful details which you would like to share for smooth installation/configuration or operation of these component which I skipped to mention/ask here.

Regards

Display 3750 Stack member report on node summary page?

$

I created a report based off of the built-in "Cisco 3750 Stack - Physical Entity" report with only the fields we prefer to see.  I'm trying to get that report to display information on the Node Summary page and only display the information about that node.  So far when I try to add the report to to the page it doesn't show up in the list of reports.  I have tried creating the report via the Orion Report Writer application on the server, but I am unable to find the fields that I am looking to report on.  Has anyone attempted and had success with this?

look below for an early look at new content hovers!

Across SolarWinds products, hovers are used to get high-level feedback about a node, application, component monitor, etc. without having to click into a details page. It’s been a while since the User Experience (UX) team designed them, and now, we’re kicking around early concepts for how to make them more useful and efficient for you.

Help us improve hovers by taking a look at the following design idea, reading the short description of how it will work, and then answering the questions that follow.  We can’t give everyone who replies points, but we CAN pick one winner at random to get a t-shirt, and everyone who answers will be helping make the SolarWinds user interface better for all!

Current version

For reference, here’s what it looks like when you hover over a node in the node tree right now.

current node hover.png

DESIGN IDEA

Unlike today’s hovers, these new hovers would be interactive!

Small hover will be used to identify an object without being overwhelmed by data in a full hover.  For example, users will see this small hover when hovering over several objects in a list in rapid succession (as opposed to hovering over a single object for any length of time).  In this example, from the hover, you can click to go to actions toy can take or more details.

node-up2.png

Large hover will be used any time users hover and leave their cursor hovering over an object slightly longer.  In this example, you can click directly on the component monitor, and you can also click to get more detailed information about things like active alerts, shown here. You can also click Actions and More Details, as in the small hover.

node-down.png

QUESTIONS

  1. Are these new hover designs more useful, less useful, or about the same level of usefulness as the current hovers?
  2. Why did you give it the rating you gave it in Question 1?
  3. What kind of actions, if any, would you want to be able to take from the “Actions” on the large hover?
  4. Where do you want “More Details” to take you?
  5. In looking at the icons (in the header area of each hover on the far left; the circle by the node in each example; in front of alerts and issues), do they clearly represent identification of status and object type?
  6. What’s missing that would make these hovers better for you?

Have you tried the Orion Global Search technical preview?

In case you hadn't seen in NPM 11.5, we shipped a technical preview of a new feature we are calling Orion Global Search (OGS). Full details (and feedback forum) are here: Global Search Technical Preview - Notes & Info In summary, our vision for OGS is to give you one-stop-shopping to find Orion object. For the technical preview build, we have this capability enabled for NPM objects, syslogs, traps, and some SAM and VIM data. The team is very interested in your feedback!

Report to determine which nodes are failing snmp polling

Any ideas? I've seen some folks query for the number of failures, and if they exceeded 5 consider that a failure? Anyone know which table that information is stored in, currently using NPM 11.5.2

Where does the node detail Location field populate from for windows servers that are not domain controllers and are polled using wmi or icmp? Some servers have the information and some do not but I do not know where the information is being pulled from on the servers?
