Alert Suppression during power outage

$

35 Sites, not all with generators.  APC UPS' on all routers (and switches/servers/etc.)  Power goes out at remote site, the last device to run out of power is the router, 150 emails.  Power is restored, another 150 emails.  Groups and dependencies are great and work as intended, you can make your dependency based on the uplink port of the core router or the site router itself.  But, it does not help when the last thing down is the router/link.  We do have APC UPS' connected to all site routers and connected to the network and core site never goes down.  Is there a way to suppress 149 of those emails based on the OnBattery status of the UPS the site router is attached to?  I do poll this information, so it is available.  I have created a custom field Alert_Suppress, all set to false.  I have a custom field named Site (all nodes have their respective values assigned to them).  If I am going to use the Alert_Suppress field in my alert, how do I change that value prior to the 150 emails?

Combining two separate Orion instances

Hello,

I am waiting to hear back from Solarwinds support but while waiting for them I was wondering if the community has ever performed what I need to get done.

We have two separate instances of Orion setup. Basically one to monitor our own company and another one to monitor all of our customers. We have gotten to the point where we would like to consolidate everything down to a single Orion instance. I saw a Support entry (Merge two SolarWinds databases - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support ) that states merging two SolarWinds databases is not possible.

Has anyone had any luck with actually getting this done without having to manually re-entering all the nodes?

Thanks in advanced,

Brian

Additional Polling Engine

I am going to be upgrading NPM from 11.5.2 to 12.0.1 next week.  I am not able to find the Additional Polling Engine file to download from the Customer Portal.  The release Notes state to go to Settings > All Settings > Polling Engine from within the Orion Web Console.  Is this only after I have installed NPM 12.0.1?  I can't seem to find this in my current install of 11.5.2.  Any other ways to get it ahead of time?

12.0.1 Upgrade Issues

I upgraded from NPM 12 to NPM 12.0.1 and have run into multiple issues.

The syslog services and trap services does not see the NCM or NPM node and will not start. It also is not recognizing licenses on the different modules. NCM is actually unusable as it states the evaluation period is up. We have tried deactivating licenses, re-activating, rebooting, repairing NPM and nothing works.

Is anyone else experiencing this, and how did you fix?

I would HIGHLY recommend that people hold off on the upgrade. Solarwinds said there are other customers reporting issues with the upgrade as well. They also stated they are having to send all logs and diagnostics from 12.0.1 users to the dev team and they will be the ones to contact and troubleshoot. There is no ETA on a resolution.

Groupd/dependecies/other. Ideal situation.

Good afternoon.

I have been thinking, searching, reading, othering.  While I am building my companies new environment I have been thinking about the interaction of our nodes, groups and any associated devices.

So I am thinking that I would like all of our servers in groups.  1 because it will look more tidy and 2 - it will be easier to manage.  The thing is that I am unsure how to action this where by if one node goes down, that one node goes down and not the whole group.  I was thinking maybe I could do it by vlans possibly, or by their respective customer name.

If someone has experience in this then it would be appreciated.

How long each interface or node was down.

When you installed NPM, did you add Nodes manually or did you run discovery?

We would like to improve user experience and for such reason I'd like to better understand if our users prefers INITIALLY to add nodes manually or run product network discovery in order to import devices to NPM

CPU & Memory not staying checked

Version 12.0 NPM

When I list resources and check CPU & Memory and submit it is not staying checked.

I go back into any of the nodes (Cisco 1921) the CPU & Memory are unchecked.

Is this normal, expected behavior?

Strange Netpath results from China?

Hello,

working with Netpath to establish some probes to our services here in the US, and I've noticed unusual and changing results specifically with probes created in CN locations.

The first live result I get has full path visibility, but strangely enough subsequent probe cycles show a vastly simplified path, missing almost all path points, latency information, and packet loss.

Before I dig any deeper into this, I wanted to poll the community to find out if anyone else has seen similar symptoms on Netpath results passing through the Great Firewall.

Thanks!

look below for an early look at new content hovers!

Across SolarWinds products, hovers are used to get high-level feedback about a node, application, component monitor, etc. without having to click into a details page. It’s been a while since the User Experience (UX) team designed them, and now, we’re kicking around early concepts for how to make them more useful and efficient for you.

Help us improve hovers by taking a look at the following design idea, reading the short description of how it will work, and then answering the questions that follow.  We can’t give everyone who replies points, but we CAN pick one winner at random to get a t-shirt, and everyone who answers will be helping make the SolarWinds user interface better for all!

Current version

For reference, here’s what it looks like when you hover over a node in the node tree right now.

current node hover.png

DESIGN IDEA

Unlike today’s hovers, these new hovers would be interactive!

Small hover will be used to identify an object without being overwhelmed by data in a full hover.  For example, users will see this small hover when hovering over several objects in a list in rapid succession (as opposed to hovering over a single object for any length of time).  In this example, from the hover, you can click to go to actions toy can take or more details.

node-up2.png

Large hover will be used any time users hover and leave their cursor hovering over an object slightly longer.  In this example, you can click directly on the component monitor, and you can also click to get more detailed information about things like active alerts, shown here. You can also click Actions and More Details, as in the small hover.

QUESTIONS

  1. Are these new hover designs more useful, less useful, or about the same level of usefulness as the current hovers?
  2. Why did you give it the rating you gave it in Question 1?
  3. What kind of actions, if any, would you want to be able to take from the “Actions” on the large hover?
  4. Where do you want “More Details” to take you?
  5. In looking at the icons (in the header area of each hover on the far left; the circle by the node in each example; in front of alerts and issues), do they clearly represent identification of status and object type?
  6. What’s missing that would make these hovers better for you?

Dell OpenManage 6.5.0 and Hardware Monitoring

Hi all,

We have a need to monitor the hardware on our servers, this is currently done with Dell OpenManage but I want SolarWinds to do it, because, well why use 2 things when you have 1 awesome thing right?

We currently monitor all our Windows Servers with the SolarWinds agent, SNMP is installed on the server but switched off.

In a nutshell what do I need to do to enable me to get the hardware information from these servers into SolarWinds.

These servers specifically are all Server 2008 R2.

I am concerned about using SNMP on these servers as it is being deprecated within Server 2012 and beyond.

Trap viewer - wrong hostname (NOT IP address)

I've searched, but all I've found so far are old threads regarding the Hostname field showing IP addresses.  That's not our issue.

What we're seeing is that the trap viewer is showing the hostname for a completely different node.  So far, this is only happening for one device that we know of.

Example:

  • HostA is at 10.1.2.3
  • HostZ is at 10.9.8.7
  • Trap viewer shows traps from 10.1.2.3 with Hostname HostZ instead of HostA
  • Trap viewer shows traps from 10.9.8.7 with Hostname HostZ, as expected

Checked:

  • DNS.  It's fine.
  • DNS cache on NPM server (ipconfig /displaydns).  10.1.2.3 is associated with HostA as it should be, while neither HostZ nor 10.9.8.7 show up at all.
  • Hosts file on NPM server.  This particular host (HostA) is actually in there, with the correct name/IP  (10.1.2.3     HostA), while HostZ is not in there.
  • NPM 12.0.1 release notes don't say anything about this
  • Hotfixes for 12.0 (if there were any) aren't showing up for me, so no idea if there was a fix there.

Other:

  • NPM 12.0
  • HostA is on the same subnet as NPM server
  • HostZ is a few hops away

Anyone have any idea what to look for, here?

Some tips about high availibility

1 - Never uninstall HA on your active server.  You can break it and never recover it correctly.

- If you do you cannot (from what I have tried and what solrwinds has talked me through) recover from this.  You can't even reinstall NPM on the active server.

Though if someone else has done this then please tell me how this is resolved.

unable to simulate alert templates

I was wondering if anyone else had/has an issue with alert templates when you try to simulate the result  before making it active. I like this form of testing to verify I have all the information needed for my customer.

Here is the screen shot of starting the simulate. It never allows any nodes to show up in the drop down and sometimes get an error.

I have tried other alert templates and some of these actually will load the information in the Group by: section and allow me to search for the specific device.

Custom Resources in Version 12

I just upgraded to version 12 yesterday and I'm having trouble figuring out how to get my custom resources to show up. Does anyone else use custom resources?

I'd also like to know how to edit existing resources, since the files are all pretty much empty or non-existent anymore.

Node next discovery stuck in the past

$

Hello Everyone,

I recently started to notice an issue with my NPM deployment involving nodes that wont rediscover. The next discovery field time just stays the same for that particular node and manually rediscovering does not appear to do anything. However, polling of interfaces and node status continue to function normally.

The problem that this is causing for me is that data such as the model number and running software version to not get updated if the hardware is replaced or rebooted to run new software.

The only way I've found to correct this is to manually re-add the node individually. This can be a tedious process and I would prefer to not have to manually readd every node experiencing this issue. I also figure that I can just delete all the affected nodes and rediscover them but I would prefer to retain historical information.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue ?
