Easy way to monitor DMVPN tunnels!!

$

So, I've been experimenting around with different ways to monitor my DMVPN tunnels on remote routers.  If the physical circuit they're running over is still in an "up" state even though there is no Internet connectivity, the state of the DMVPN tunnel tends to stay "up" also, causing monitoring nightmares.   I've been doing a lot of playing with EIGRP status and alerting on that, but the EIGRP alerts are difficult to translate to a "down" state on the node summary or details pages, not to mention the issue with how often EIGRP is polled by default.   So, I finally broke down and decided to look closer and custom MIBs and such to monitor the tunnels with.  While doing so I think I found a much MUCH easier way!!

Was looking for resources on how to monitor DMVPN via SNMP and came across this article:

DMVPN Tunnel Health Monitoring and Recovery  [Support] - Cisco Systems

I got specifically interested in the part about "interface state control".  Now, this is only useful from the remote routers perspective because what it does is make the state of the interface (ie: whether its up or down) dependent on whether there are any active NHRP sessions for that tunnel.   And all you have to do to configure it is put "if-state nhrp" on the tunnel interface, super easy!

Now, this might not be perfect, but its pretty good.   Why not perfect you might ask?

Let's say you have dual DMVPN hubs and the connection to one of the hubs isn't working on a given tunnel due to a routing misconfiguration or something.  Since there would be one active NHRP session on the tunnel interface, this wouldn't find it.

This also does nothing for monitoring the tunnels from the head-end perspective, if for some reason monitoring the remote routers wasn't how you wanted to do this.  Once again, not useful.

You might also say if all your DMVPN tunnels weren't functioning, that this wouldn't help, but in that case the whole node should be down so I think we can discount that!

Not much to lose, and pretty easy to configure up, give it a try and let me know what you think!

Network Map "Dynamic background failed to load"

Today I created a new map using a Linked background referencing a weather map http://image.weather.com/web/radar/us_radar_plus_usen.jpg. The validation of the map passed and I was able to add objects to the map and save it without any problems. The URL can be viewed by any browser on the server and on my desktop. I added the new weather map to my Network summary, but when the page refreshes it shows the new map with a Red Box saying "Dynamic background failed to load".

I tried resolving my issue searching the SW forums and found a couple threads referencing my problem . These threads pointed to a proxy issue, which applies to my situation and talked about changing the web.config. Using the web.config example that was posted I still get the dreaded Red Box. Has anyone experienced this issue and if so what was done to fix it?

To trouble shoot this further I did open a ticket with SW and got no help, with them saying its my network. Not to knock the new support, but it seems that in the old days when I called Support I got a knowledgeable engineer who new the product well and was able to get me the answers I needed.

Cisco Access Points deleting from database when down

We are currently utilizing Cisco controllers to manage many different Cisco access points that we have across our enterprise. I have noticed that the AP disappears from Solarwinds when it disassociates from the Cisco controller. Is there a way to have Solarwinds show the AP as down instead of deleting it? How should I be doing this?

Delete Nodes in Bulk that are Down

Hello,

I'm looking for a way to delete nodes that have been down for 30+ days, but have been unable to find a way to do it. I'm fairly new to SQL. Is there a SQL query that would accomplish this or a way in the web interface?

How do you configure the time zone settings for NPM?

$

I'm running NPM 11.5.3.

I looked around Thwack and there didn't seem to be a consensus on where the time zone "set" in NPM. Some posts said that the local time setting on the Operating system was used wherever the NPM poller was installed, others said it was a setting in an IIS config file.  I can't find a setting in for this in the Web UI.

So: If I want to make sure I'm set up correctly to use xyz time zone, where do I configure this?

If there are multiple apps to configure this for, I'm running:

Orion Platform 2015.1.3

NCM 7.4.1

IPAM 4.

IVIM 2.1.1

UDT 3.2.3

DPA 10.0.1

Using pagegate with NPM

We have a few people on our team who cannot receive SMS messages from NPM because of their carrier. Instead of the SMS message coming to their phone as a text alert, it comes as an email. We use an application called PageGate to send text alert messages from another system to the phones in question, and I was wondering if there was any way to integrate NPM with PageGate to send those alerts. The phones in question use a carrier called Cricket. Thanks.

Reporting on a UnDP

Hi Folks,

I'm hoping you're all smarter than me because I'm hitting nothing but dead ends.

I created a new UnDP today to poll my Cisco devices for their last reload reason.  This UnDP is sitting in the default category and is titled "whyReload".

I wanted to create a report of any units that have a reload reason != power on, reload command, etc. To check for nodes that are crashing.

I tried editing an old Report Writer report that shows the last boot time of units but I am not able to find my newly created UnDP in the Report Writer interface.

I've attempted to create a new report in the Web GUI Reporting system, but again I'm unable to find my UnDP in there.

I feeel like I'm missing something super simple but for the life of me, I can't figure out what's wrong.  I've followed multiple other posts that cover the same issue but they generally point me to Report Writer and when I go to select the field but Custom Pollers isn't an option for me to click.

Thanks!

Brian

status LED in a custom report

$

BACKGROUND: I'm trying to craft a view for our operations folks and provide them with an overall status of unmanaged "elements"  One view I'm trying to create is one that shows unmanaged network interfaces that have not been unmanaged at the node level.  This can be achieved by looking at the Unmanaged binary field in the interfaces table and ensuring the unmanagedfrom or unmanageduntil fields are NOT NULL.

WHAT I'VE TRIED: I have created a custom table resource that does the above but also grabs the statusLED GIF that is associated with the object but I can't get it to actually display the gif on the web.  I've tried different options in the table layout for the GIF columns like "Event Icon" but they don't seem to process

QUESTION: Does anyone know how to display the GIF that is associated with an element's STATUS in a custom table resource?

Hi All,

I would like to create a report where we can get the below highlighted (Hardware) details against the node.

i used the below query to find the all hardware column in all DB table but unfortunately, i did not the same info in all table,

SELECT COLUMN_NAME, TABLE_NAME

FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS

WHERE COLUMN_NAME LIKE '%Hardware%'

Could you please anyone can help use so that we can make a good report, which helps we can understand how many node are physical and virtual and where same is hosted. because this tap is showing also info like, VM is hosted in which esxi or VM is hosted in which hyper-v node.

Thanks

Netpath not establishing any connections

Within the last 2 weeks, all but one of our Netpaths have stopped displaying any data, just displaying the "No Data Found" message.

I deleted all of them and tried making new ones, but none of them are getting any data.  I have them going from the main Solarwinds server as well as from remote agents.

It's even more strange that once path would keep working while all others stopped, and no new ones will establish.

I have done the recommended database cleanup, but no improvement.

Status & Response Time - Database Query

Hello All,

I'd like to find the table name that will allow me to change the method for Status & Response Time

Our ISP is dropping ICMP packets causing false node down alerts, and I may have to do a query to change the polling method.

I don't want to manually update each node individually.

Added vCenter to Orion and the vCenter Status shows as "Unknown". Case # 1073578

Hi all. We have an implementation of vCenter that has the vCenter on one server, the WEB services on the another server and SSO on a third server. All other vCenters we monitor have these services installed on a single server and monitoring works fine. Is there something different require for a multi server implementation of vCenter? We have open a case with Solarwinds a week ago but no luck so far.

The solution that they have suggested did not work.

In the past few months I have seen a poller go down more than once for having maxed out it potential 64k ports.  I would like to create an alert that will 3 monitor and alert me when a threshold of 60k ports has been met.  Has anyone monitored something like this in the past ?

Does the "last boot" alert variable apply to servers and network devices or just network devices?  I was trying to make an alert that would kick off whenever something was rebooted so I put in an alert "last boot has changed".

Any ideas?

Fail WMI Polling alert?

Hello Everyone,

I have a question I was wondering if there is anyway to setup an alert that alerts whenever a node fails to poll a node via WMI? The reason I ask is because this past weekend we had a server lock up because of 100% CPU Utilization and solarwinds couldn't poll it WMI cause it was capped but solarwinds didn't report the server was down because the server was still able to be pinged. Is this something that can be accomplished?
