Hi

SMTP is forwarding alert messages but not the trap viewer. I have created several rules to send particular trap to email address using the same SMTP server working for Alert Messages, but not for the rule created in Trap Viewer.

SolarWinds Needs Your APC Smart-UPS & Symmetra

$

The Orion team is currently researching improvements to UPS monitoring, but we need your help. There are countless different models of APC UPS's that have been released over the years, and there's simply no way SolarWinds can test them all without your help.

We're currently seeking volunteers willing to perform SNMP MIB walks against their APC Smart-UPS and Symmetra UPS's. These MIB walks will be used exclusively by SolarWinds development team internally for research purposes, or to test any UPS monitoring features that could be developed to ensure works properly with your UPS.

If you want to make sure your UPS would work with any potential Orion UPS monitoring solutions, we strongly encourage your participation.

What we need:  An SNMP MIB walk using the tool provided from your APC Smart-UPS or Symmetra UPS's. This tool can also be found on your Orion server, located by default under 'C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\SnmpWalk.exe'. If you have multiple devices, we ask that you please gather a MIB walk from each and every device, even if the makes/models are the same.

The tool is fairly simple and straightforward to use. Enter the IP address of the UPS and the community string, then click "scan".

Alternate method: If you'd prefer to use NET-SNMP instead of the tool provided above you can download and install NET-SNMP from http://net-snmp.sourceforge.net/

Win32 binaries are available here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/net-snmp/files/net-snmp%20binaries/5.5-binaries/net-snmp-5.5.0-1.x86.exe/download

     Run this command from “installation directory/bin/”: snmpwalk -v 2c -c public -O netU 127.0.0.1 1 > output.txt
(change the IP address and community string accordingly, and don’t forget there is 1 after IP address. It means it will scan whole SNMP tree)

What Now: Both methods will generate a single file per UPS containing a complete MIB walk of the device. We recommend naming this file the make and model of the device that was scanned. For example "SmartUPS_SRT_5k.txt".

These files can then be posted here in this thread in response to this posting as an attachment. If you're concerned about the potentially sensitive information contained in the MIB file I recommend zipping the files and password protecting them before posting. You can then PM me the password. All posted MIB walks in this thread will be deleted after being collected by the APM development team.

Alternatively, if you're not comfortable posting the MIB walks here, please email me your MIB walks directly at the email address below.

The more people who participate, and the more UPS's we receive MIB Walks for,  the higher the quality of a feature we are capable of delivering. We encourage everyone to participate and appreciate your willingness to help.

linux snmpd restart during logrotate triggers false reboot alert weekly

All my linux machines run logrotate between 4am to 5am on Sundays.  During this run, snmpd is restarted to free the lock on the log file.  Unfortunately, NPM believes a reboot has occured whenever snmpd is restarted because sysUpTime.0 is reset.  Is there a way to mitigate this false reboot alert?

/etc/logrotate.d/snmpd:
/var/log/snmpd.log {
    notifempty
    missingok
    postrotate
        /sbin/service snmpd condrestart 2> /dev/null > /dev/null || true
    endscript
}

  Thank you,

Orion Improvement Program causes memory leak in SWIS v3 in NPM 12

Hi folks I just wanted to throw this topic out there.  I don't see a lot of information out there and this issue has a huge impact on performance and some people may be wondering where things can be improved within the system.

We were experiencing what appears to be a memory leak with SWIS v3 on our main web poller so I opened a ticket to see where it would get.

Here is what I learned:

- Solarwinds support says this is a known issue and that it is fixed in v12.0.1

- SWISv3 will build up memory @ a rate of about 100 MB a day until it is killed/restarted

- Orion Improvement program (OIP) is installed on every host, even if you choose not to participate.  This is a big deal because this is sending information out of your network to google analytics.

- Uninstalling OIP seems to correct this memory leak

We've observed our web server for a week or so now and the memory seems to be stabilized in the 400-600 MB range on the SWIS v3 service

Also, I installed NPMv12.0.1 on my QA environment and the OIP was installed again even though I chose not to participate.

Dell Service Tag not displayed

Our VMware hosts are Dell servers.  Why can't the node details page under hardware read/show the service tags?  Using SNMP it gives the other info like model etc.

SW Dell Hardware.png

I found an OID that gives the service tag.

1.3.6.1.2.1.47.1.1.1.1.11

SW UDP Dell service tag.png

Anyway to get that added to the Hardware Details?  I have added the above resource but would just be much cleaner and easier to include on reports if included under hardware.

APC PDU UnDP: No such name error

Good morning,

I'm trying to use a UnDP to get the amps on each bank of my APC PDU's (model 8841), and for some reason those OID's seem to have dropped out of the device.  They used to work, but now I'm getting the following error:

SNMP monitor execution error. No such name error. Check whether OID is valid.

I tried it again with the other PDU OID's I know of, and that doesn't fix it.  I'm not too experienced with MIB walking, but it seems like everything associated with the status of the PDU is just getting skipped over, leaving only general information about the device.

What would cause that, and how would I go about fixing it?

Component v Node

Hello,

Quickly, I am new to network monitoring and newer to SolarWinds.

We have just setup our NPM and out of the box we turned off every alert.  We are going thru the alerts one at a time.  The first rule that we customized was when a node goes down.   That one is working well.  Now I get to the next rule which is to alert when a component goes down.  If the node is down, wouldn't the components also be down?  The out of the box rule speaks of both the node and a component being down.  I'm struggling with that one.  I'd appreciate help understanding this one.

Thank for reading.

Enabling hardware monitoring on Cisco ASR9K

Discovery problems since upgrade to NPM v12.01

$

We recently upgraded from NPM v12 to v12.01 (withe the Orion Platform 2016.2-Hot Fix 1).  Since the upgrade, we are frequently dealing w/problems discovering as well as re-discovering devices.

For example,

Sometimes, the Network Sonar Discovery (aka NSD) aborts w/an error stating that there was a problem during discovery.  Other times, the NSD finishes but w/the error "Exception occurred during discovery import."

Also, when I do a List Resources on my devices, sometimes it just runs for non stop until I press the Cancel button.  The only workaround then is to use the Change Polling Engine option and then it works.

I already ran a repair on the Core Services installer for my core and polling engines.  Yet, discovery problems persists.   I consulted w/SW tech support but so far, none of their suggestions have worked.

If any of your have run into similar issues, I would very much like to hear from you and know what worked for you.

Thanks.

Any document avaialable which shows the detailed architecture

HI All,

I m looking for detailed architecture which shows the flow of how exactly every component works and connects together..mainly for NPM and SAM module I would be interested.

By component I mean the Polling controller, Job worker etc... All the services that get listed in Orion service manager...

IN old admin guide I guess this explanation was there but I don't see it in the new one....

Upgrades/Updates Change DB Autogrowth & Max Size settings

$

Every time we upgrade/update the application/database, it sets the autogrowth to 100MB and sets the max size to unlimited for both data and log files.  This is a huge problem.  Our database is 395GB.  Can you imagine the fragmentation/performance issues if we kept those settings?  This is a huge problem and has been ever since we bought this module three years ago.

Can we get a fix for this?

I am wanting to show any device that has an uptime status of less than one hour. I have defined the devices with (Network_Layer = 'access') and I tried a couple of different filters (ex: SystemUpTime < '60' and node.systemuptime <> 100%).

Orion NPM Architecture, Speed, and SQL

$

In my last post, "What NPM Tips and Tricks do You Have?" I asked about tips and tricks, expecting a mashup of different things from all over the NPM world and to a certain extent that's what happened. Interestingly, however, a large section of the thread turned into a discussion about two things: maps and speed.

There were certainly a lot of good map tips, and you can find more at Solarwinds Labs.  In fact, you can even find out how to make your boss happy with a Big Green Button.

The speed issue is particularly intriguing to me since there are a lot of times where, let's be honest here, NPM is a bit of a dog when it comes to response. The web interface is notoriously slow, and gets even worse when you have a ton of custom widgets, do-dads, and whatchamacallits loading on a screen. Several people mentioned that a lot of speed can be picked up by getting in at the database level and pre-packaging certain things.

ZachM wrote:

Stored Procedures and custom Views created in the DB save us countless man hours and, in my experience, working directly in the DB can really expand your knowledge of the architecture of NPM overall. I highly recommend every SolarWinds engineer to challenge themselves to learn more SQL. I am by no means a DBA, but I can pull every bit of data you can get from the website, and I can do it faster 90% of the time.

NPM is an incredibly flexible and extensible product, especially in recent revisions, and offers a lot of opportunity for people willing to really dig in behind the scenes. As usual, I have more questions:

* What SQL version and architecture are you using (separate database, named instances, etc.)?

* What architecture have you found helps in the speed department?

As an example of what I'm interested in: we run Cisco UCS servers, with VMware as the hypervisor layer, backed by NetApp FAS3240 fully licensed arrays, with Flash Cache, etc. We tier our storage manually and have full production SQL and Oracle instances virtualized.  The storage is connected to the UCS with an aggregated 80GB, and the UCS to the core at 160GB.

How to change the URL variable in alerts to publish a different name?

$

We want to change the published URL in email alerts to a different name (C-Name) since we are going to migrate web serving off our primary poller, and start publishing the URL externally for support staff who receive alerts to their phones.

Currently it looks like this:

We need to replace the server name "SXNETSW1"  with the C-Name.

Where do I change that name to make the alert variable use it instead of the server name?
