"Bad trap packet received from Node with IP x.x.x.x. Error description: Unknown user and engine. Packet discarded."

This is one possible reason for the error "Bad trap packet received from Node with IP x.x.x.x.  Error description: Unknown user and engine.  Packet discarded."

I ran into this issue not too long ago. All of our Cisco routers & switches are running SNMPv3 and I was receiving the error "Bad trap packet received from Node with IP x.x.x.x.  Error description: Unknown user and engine.  Packet discarded." that was showing up in the Events window. After troubleshooting that SNMPv3 was configured correctly on the routers and switches. I noticed that the IP address in the error message was actually assigned to interfaces on the routers and that the traps were being sent from the interfaces. Since the SNMPv3 credentials are used by the router and not the interfaces I needed to find a way to source all traps from the router's Loopback address themselves. The easiest way to do this was to enter the following line within the SNMP portion of the router configuration. "snmp-server trap-source Loopbackxxxx" Where xxxx is the loopback # that the router's IP address is assigned to.

SNMP Trap service shuts down

I've had this issue open with support for some time but they haven't had any luck getting to the bottom of the issue; therefore I thought I might post the problem here to see if anyone else might be experiencing the same or has any thoughts on what might be going on.

I'm running NPM 9.5 (just installed SP3). The problem I am experiencing is that the Windows Server 2003 SNMP Trap service will shut down. Let's say I reboot the server. The Trap service starts and runs for about 10 minutes. Then the local svcORION account (server name is ORION) sends the SNMP Trap Service a stop control which shuts down the service. Does anyone know why this would occur? I can't pinpoint when it started but I know it worked fine when we were running 9.1. We've tried reinstalling SNMP with no luck. I'm trying to see if I can find a solution before I try reinstalling the server.

Incorrect discard counts on Cisco3750 interface

I have an issue with one interface on a Cisco 3750 switch that seems to be reporting abnormally high transmit discards - over 200k / 30 mins. The strange thing is that the counts are frequently exactly the same or increment by one and occasionally the count is exactly double:-

External Websites Duplicate

Hi everyone,

 

I'm new on NPM

 

I'm trying to integrate a website that we use to get some inventory data and make upgrade for some networks devices but when I create the External Website Link the link works fine but the page its duplicating the main html frame (head logo, Home-Network-Virtualization Tabs, etc...) inside one in to the other. I don't know what i'm doing wrong

 

I feel like I'm close to reach what I want but I need some help

NPM 10.4.2 Reinstall on 2008 R2 64-bit

I'm in the process of migrating NPM to a new server. Do I need to run IIS in 32-bit if installing on 2008 R2 64-bit or is this requirement just for 2003 64-bit servers? The documentation isn't really clear on this. Thanks!

I need a report to show me the 95th Percentile CPU and Memory Usage for my servers for Last Month

Although there are default reports to show the average CPU and Memory usage there isn't anything to show the 95th percentile usage, has anyone created a report for this if so could you send it to me please as I don't want to have to go to every graph on all my servers, thanks in advance,

Alerts - Percent variable being displayed as a variable

Some of my alerts display their received and transmit statistics in what appears to be an exponent.

It should be displayed as a percentage.

Any ideas on why and how to fix this?

Hee is an example:

 

Alert: Transmit Percent Utilization of

SNMPv3 with ESXi?

Hi,

 

Putting this in the NPM group, since it is an SNMP issue....

 

Please don't ask me why (long story), but I am trying to get NPM to poll an ESXi server.  Anyone get this to work?  I have the ESXi 5.1 system configured for SNMPv3, however when I run a test connect from NPM it fails.  The ESXi is spitting out a syslog message that indicates NPM has requested authNoPriv[2}, and I have it set for both authorization and privacy, so the resulting connection is not supported.... I have both the authorization and privacy fields configured in NPM, so I am not sure why it is sending that kind of request.  As a test, I dropped the ESXi back to auth only, and it quit giving errors, but it also still fails with no errors at the NPM end.

 

If anyone has the magic beans for the configuration on the ESXi side I might be missing, I'd appreciate them.  I have tried this on two different ESXi boxes, and get the same results.

 

Note that I only need polling at this time, not traps.

 

I'll probably open a ticket on this as well.

Ok, I may be over thinking this one but better safe than sorry. I want to modify some of the default charts that appear. For example, on the NPM Summary page I want to modify the 'Down Interfaces' chart to include the time that has passed since the interface went down. I have the SQL that I need to insert, but where do I make the modification? Do I tweak the .ascx sheet itself?isplay

Weird ESX monitoring issue.

We are having an issue with monitoring our ESX hosts 2 of the 3 of them. The issue is 2 of the network interfaces are showing up as unknowns. The rest of the 14 interfaces are fine. Also the performance counters for these hosts are working just fine. It is just the 2 interface. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

How to Capture Web Pages Periodically?

Hello,

 

I'm having a problem capturing the output of several Orion web pages. Specifically some in the NTA (Netflow) section, but my question is really more generic and related to the way Orion itself does things...

 

I've tried many ways to capture the output. I don't care if it's text or graphics or anything in-between, but I need to capture the Netflow output (stuff on the web page) from Orion. I've written scripts which work fine, except they return perfectly captured and rendered EMPTY pages. I've tried specialty programs expressly for the purpose of GRAPHICALLY capturing the page and returning the content as an actual image... with the exact same results-- an IMAGE of a perfectly rendered, but otherwise EMPTY web page. The problem seems to be (my guess) is that the web page is loading okay, and then the Javascript on the page is going out and pulling the images (graphs / charts / data / whatever) to display afterwards. So my scripts and the various programs are doing what they're supposed to do, except they're not waiting around long enough for the JS to finish doing its thing and getting the whole, complete, finally-rendered page.

 

I am under the gun to capture this information for upper mgmt and aside from custom sql queries-- which I'm ALSO having problems with-- the queries from the Report Writer are throwing up SQL errors (see my other post regarding that if you're interested). I did up the retention period considerably in the hope that if all went bad I could at least go back and query the database. Presumably there is some way to extract what I need. But I'm not having much luck getting it done and I'm in urgent need of being able to capture these pages (or get the report some other way) for our study.

 

Can anybody suggest a solution??

I am trying to use custom SQL filters for my NPM summary. I need to know in what units does the NPM calculates time. When i writes SystemUpTime<2000 is it 2000 secs, mins, hours or days that it gets? Also, how do I edit the default units?

Secondary polling engine is it a full blown web server?

I currently have an all-in-one single Orion SLX server running as DB, polling engine & web server.

I am in the process of moving the DB to a new dedicated SQL server at another site.
In addition I have purchased an Orion SLX secondary polling license for another poller.

My intent was to run the new polling server at the same site as the DB as the web server & relegate the old all-in-one server as just a polling engine.
Does the secondary polling software/license allow me to run this as a web server?
Or do I need to uninstall SLX on my old server & re-install the new secondary SLX polling software/license on this server?
And then get the original SLX license reset to install it on my new web server/polling engine next to the new DB server?

I'm not sure what the licensing & features come with the secondary polling software.

BTW, is there some way to download the secondary SLX V8.1 software?
I only have the V8.5 files in my Customer download/update page & I'm not ready to go that route yet.

Can I ignore an interface globaly?

I've seen some posts on this but never a resolution. I would like to know if I'm able to set a specific interface to be ignored by scheduled discovery. Also is there an easy way to add the interfaces I will be removing from the system to the ignore list so that they won't be rediscovered. This is happening on an very large portion of 115000 elements.
