Alert MAC Address variable

$
0
0

I am trying to have an alert trigger the execution of a program with variables. The problem I have is the specific variable for the program I cannot figure out.

Currently I am trying to use 2 variables ${IP_Address} and ${MAC}. Unfortunately the ${MAC} is not returning the MAC Address.

Here is the program being executed.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Toolset\WakeOnLAN.exe" -IP ${IP_Address} -MAC ${MAC} -EXIT

Is there a way to get the MAC address variable to work?

Thanks,

MIB Database - auto update

$

This is for the Orion development team - I was wondering if there is a project going on at the Solarwinds to auto download/update the latest MIBs to be added to the MIB Database? Similar to the Windows update that we all Windows lovers/users go through every month or so.... This would be really helpful to keep the MIBs DB current and easy to maintain instead of downloading and replacing the .cfg file manually to apply the latest MIBs every week.

Agent Install at First Boot

I found a couple of nice docs that explain how to install the Solarwinds agent at first boot

https://support.solarwinds.com/Success_Center/Server_Application_Monitor_(SAM)/SAM_Administrator_Guide/0E0_Monitor_with_Orion_agents_in_SAM/0J0_Automatically_deploy_a_Windows_agent_on_Amazon_Web_Services

https://support.solarwinds.com/Success_Center/Server_Application_Monitor_(SAM)/SAM_Administrator_Guide/0E0_Monitor_with_Orion_agents_in_SAM/0K0_Automatically_deploy_a_Windows_agent_on_Microsoft_Azure

The only issue I have is that, there is no reference of the PowerShell script that would initiate the agent install.  Would anyone be able to provide an example, or something they have used in Dev/Prod ?

Network Discovery Failed

Almost everyday Orion/NPM is reporting "Network Discovery Failed".

While I appreciate this alert, it's rather useless. There is not apparent link to a log or a reason that I can find.

Where can I get more information on what the failure was? Where is the log file for this?

Any direction you can provide would be great.

Thanks!

Polling at different intervals?

I think I already know the answer but wants to make sure. Can you tell the polling engine no to poll all the devices at the same time? Let me clarify, Can I group all my devices into 2 or 3 different groups and then tell the polling engine to poll those at different intervals? i.e. poll group 1 every XX, group 2 every XX, and so on.  I'm looking at this question from a network performance point of view, not the solarwinds server.

Search for custom property with exact match

Hi everyone on Thwack,

What I would like to do is have a search that doesn't return "results like" but only return items that exactly match the criteria I am looking for.

We have a custom property called "Number" which is the number of the physical branch location.

So when I am searching for physical location 53, I don't want results from physical location 953.

I've looked for answers on Thwack and Google and couldn't find how to do this.

Any suggestions?

Duplex mismatch filtered by custom properties

I need a few duplex mismatch alerts to send to specific distribution groups based off the custom properties, City, and Department.  Out of the box Solarwinds uses an advanced SWQL query,

LEFT JOIN Orion.TopologyConnections tc ON (tc.SrcNodeID = Interfaces.NodeID OR tc.DestNodeID = Interfaces.NodeID) AND (tc.SrcInterfaceID =Interfaces.InterfaceID OR tc.DestInterfaceID =Interfaces.InterfaceID) AND tc.DestInterfaceID IS NOT NULL AND tc.SrcInterfaceID IS NOT NULL AND tc.LayerType = 'L2'

LEFT JOIN Orion.NPM.Interfaces i ON i.InterfaceID = tc.DestInterfaceID OR i.InterfaceID = tc.SrcInterfaceID WHERE Interfaces.DuplexMode != i.DuplexMode AND Interfaces.DuplexMode > 1 AND i.DuplexMode > 1

How can i add the City is "Denver", and the Department is "Accounting" fields to this query?

Thanks!

This article provides quick information about  your current environment and health check , Further it  will help you address the most common reasons of  performance issues on to your server without sending the diagnostics to SolarWinds support  .

In this article you can also Audit your own environment quickly if its been setup as recommended by the Solarwinds MINIMUM requirements or according to the settings eliminating bottlenecks creating performance issues within the set environment .

This article also help to save time to upload the diagnostics for Support where you have air gap between the server and you can check the basic health check on the actual server itself .

There are lots of other benefits to check the environment health within the internal due to security procedure not allowing uploading the diagnostics for Solarwinds support .

✔Server Hardware

✔Total Elements (Nodes /Interfaces/ Volumes)  been polled per server

✔Check free disk space on the Orion Server and SQL server

✔Check Your Server Polling  Rate

✔SQL Server / Orion DB Size / Settings / Options

✔Check SQL Server Disk Performance

✔Orion Antivirus directory exclusion

✔Webpages Customization

Lets Go!

Collect System diagnostics as below.

Navigate to Start -> SolarWinds Orion -> Documentation and Support

Launch the gray icon for Orion Diagnostics.> Click "Start"

This program will generate a .zip file as output.

( Unzip in a folder ) Right Click >  Select Extract Here .

Server Hardware

Lets check your System Hardware first if this even near to the Solarwinds MINIM recommended.

Go to the SystemInformation folder > Open the SystemInfo.txt file

You will be able to find the System hardware specification  below is an example where system is only assigned with 2 Physical CPU Sockets /

below is an example where the system is only assigned two CPU PHYSICAL SOCKETS which is below Solarwinds MINIMUM recommendation .

You must have to have MINIMUM 4 PHYSICAL CPU SOCKETS here .

System Type:               x64-based PC

Processor(s):              2 Processor(s) Installed.

                           [01]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1600 Mhz

                           [02]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1400 Mhz

                          Total Physical Memory:     49.082 MB

                          Available Physical Memory: 39.408 MB

Virtual Memory: Max Size:  56.250 MB

                          Virtual Memory: Available: 45.376 MB

Virtual Memory: In Use:    10.874 MB

Now open the SysInfo.csv file and check the further current CPU load on the System and CPU GHz level .

Below in an example where the CPU load in around 70% on the current system due to two main reasons .

Parameter

Value

OSVersion

Windows Server 2012 R2 (Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0)

FreeSpaceInPagingFiles

7109 MB

CurrentTimeZone

xxxx Standard Time (UTC+01:00:00)

Low Physical Sockets assigned

Low CPU power less then 3.0 GHz

You should be able to see MINIMUM 4 Physical Processors  Sockets as below .

Strongly recommend :  NOT to use lower then 3.0 GHz processor you will never get the performance what you are looking for even the Host and Guest wont show the CPU is busy .

Most likely you will see CPU spikes / Orion Services consuming High CPU and Memory . Once you will move the same VM to higher then 3.0 GHz process all the above symptoms will be resolved.

With lower then 3.0 GHz processor there might be other issues such as SQL Server TCP connections TimeOut Errors and High amount of data  stored under MSMQ on the system .

Make sure you have MINIMUM 3. Ghz host with Hyperthreading Active it will improve the Guest performance significantly and you will have full performance out of Solarwinds application

This is how you setup your VM in ESX

Here is an Example when you assign the numbers of CPU SOCKETS to the VM

System Model:              VMware Virtual Platform

System Type:               x64-based PC

Processor(s):              4 Processor(s) Installed.

                           [01]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3493 Mhz

                           [02]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3493 Mhz

                           [03]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3493 Mhz

                           [04]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3493 Mhz

BIOS Version:              Phoenix Technologies LTD 6.00, 4/14/2014

Further check how much memory is assigned and available for the system and check the TaskManager which application is consuming high memory .

In above case the System Hardware is not even near to the recommended SolarWinds production deployment therefor the CPU load will remain high therefor System resources.

The following table lists minimum hardware requirements and recommendations for your SolarWinds Orion server.

Installing multiple SolarWindsOrion Platform products on the same computer may change the requirements.

Hardware requirements are listed by SolarWinds NPM license level.

Check free disk space on the Orion Sever and SQL Server

Make sure you have Good free space available on the Orion Server disks C Drive and installed Directory .

Make sure you have Good free space available on the SQL Server where the actual DB is stored.

With only SolarWinds SLX license you can montior up to 12000 Elements and beyond this you will need an Additional Polling Engine to monitor.

More Details see the Server Sizing guide .

Server Sizing recommendations

Use additional polling engines for 12,000 or more monitored elements

If you plan to monitor 12,000 or more elements, SolarWinds recommends that you install additional polling engines on separate servers to help distribute the work load.

I would also strongly advise you to check the blog post for any other questions if you are polling beyond 12000 Elements with single SLX Server.

Boost your server polling capacity with Stackable Poller license

Check your Server Polling Rate

Go to Settings > Polling Engines .

Check if any of the Polling Rate is increased ?

Make sure none of the Polling Rate exceeded above 100%

POLLING COMPLETION100

{"EntityType":"Orion.Nodes","EngineID":1,"ObjectSubType":"SNMP","SNMPVersion":3,"SNMPV3Username":"********","SNMPV3PrivMethod":"AES128","SNMPV3PrivKey":"***********","SNMPV3PrivKeyIsPwd":false,"SNMPV3AuthMethod":"MD5","SNMPV3AuthKey":"*******","Caption":"PSA000404","IPAddress":"1.2.3.4"}

The checkbox for Privacy Key is Password does not disable in my created node.

Is there a way to disable the Private Key is Password flag in the SNMP credential?

Thanks!

Usefulness of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI)

Guys, can anyone give me areal example of the usefulness of DPI? An engineer enabled it across the board on our agents but the info it provides to my eye is pretty useless. It seems to tell you things like 'traffic to Active Directory is slow' but o what! No detail on what process, what type of packet etc. Seems useless. I used Splunk stream and its free and much more powerful. Maybe I'm missing something?

NOC view setup and customization.

Ok.. this is going to be a simple request.    If I can click on any page and create a NOC view out of it in NPM.  And I can go to the Admin page and pull up pages that have a NOC view in a single window.   Why can I not be able to create NOC views of my existing pages and then put them together in one view without having to redo the pages that I want in the same NOC view.  This to me would be the same as the options we have to create individual tool bars.

Just think this would be great!

SolarWinds Agent in Citrix PVS Images

$

We have a large Citrix farm deployed using Citrix provisioning services (PVS) that we'd like to monitor. We are using NPM/SAM and generally we do everything agentlessly using WMI/PSRemoting. However, we do use event subscriptions quite a lot also. As the PVS targets are stateless I'm assuming this will not work with them as the subscriptions would have to be made in the master image before being deployed out and this is not practical. SO, just wondering if anyone was using the agent with PVS targets and if they had any feedback to share?
