So I am doing some training with some of my other team members on Solarwinds. This week during our meeting I went to show them the SolarWinds agents we have deployed (we have 18) and one I went to the agents page it showed only 3 online the rest you could not connect to. After our meeting I went to the agents and on the page under other selected Restart Agent Service. This restarted the agents and everything was up and connected. Has anyone else had this same issue? And how can I make sure that the agents are always running and I do not have to worry about checking them to make sure they are running? Thanks!
Solarwinds Agents - All Stopped
Whoops! Upgrade failure midway through install!
Hello All! In the middle of an upgrade my VDI terminal decided to force reboot, thus kicking out my RDP session to the SolarWinds server halfway through the install. Once I was able to reconnect and rerun the installer I receive a message inside the SolarWinds Setup Wizard "Ooops...we detected a problem...." The installer had apparently been able to upgrade Orion Core to 2017.3 but had not upgraded the Modules, NPM, NCM, IPAM. Now my modules are incompatible with the platform. I failed to snapshot the VM the server is on and the Database VM has multiple databases so I'd like to avoid a previous snapshot of it. I opened a support ticket but now I'm unable to review my open cases and I'm currently in queue with Technical Support. Anyone have this problem and able to resolve?
Thanks!
*fingers crossed*
Offline orion installation...really?
Hello,
I am attempting SW Orion NPM upgrades to NPM 12.2 in order to remediate STIG vulnerability ID V-41036. Unfortunately, all of the servers this needs to performed on are in fact not internet accessible. So, First I downloaded the Solarwinds-Orion-NPM-12.2-OfflineInstaller.exe. Ok right? not so much and a couple of interesting discoveries. Strangely, when I run this virgin absolute latest (from what I can tell) offline installer. one of the first screens of it it that "a new installer is available and it wants to download. How is that since I just downloaded it from the customer portal??Dunno. anyways, I chose to skip this and proceed... a little confusing but OK I've seen stranger things. the the installer wizard runs a series of pre-deployment tests. Here's the meat of my post purpose. The test results are shown with "No internet connection detected. Installation cannot continue"...can't seem to skip past this. Also, for some odd reason, the installer discovers that I also have NCM and UDT installed, lists them as some "manual upgrades are necessary" (for NCM) and insists on doing so. I am not seeing a way I can De-Select these and simply continue with NPM only. Ultimately, the installer cannot continue and actually claims "download the offline installer" and gives me a link...so what the heck, I do it again and again. this time I downloaded the Solarwinds-Orion-OfflineInstaller.exe, which appears to be the exact 2.7GB painful download and results the exact same way... So will you help a fellow American out who's down on his luck?...can anyone shed some light on this situation? ALL and ANY Feedback will be greatly appreciated...Thanks in advance, Tony
When you installed NPM, did you add Nodes manually or did you run discovery?
We would like to improve user experience and for such reason I'd like to better understand if our users prefers INITIALLY to add nodes manually or run product network discovery in order to import devices to NPM
To SaaS or not to SaaS, that is the question.
Please help us understand your organization's thinking on this topic by selecting how much you agree or disagree with the following statement:
"My company would never purchase a SaaS-based monitoring tool to monitor our on-premises IT infrastructure."
Monitor Site to make sure it is up
So I need to go a bit beyond the basics of setting up an external site and monitoring an IP address to make sure it is up. I was going to use the SAM App-insights for IIS template to monitor the site and IIS on the node that I use on a few of my other nodes but this won't work on this server because it is running Tomcat IIS on a Windows box.
What I have is an HTTPS site that I need to check that its up but need to go beyond just a ping. I also have a login to the site so I can check to see if its up and available to login to. I was thinking I could maybe use an HTTPS monitor and configure the site to with a login? I have to do some more digging into this but wanted to see if anyone here has set this up before. Thanks! - Dave
Some alert variables not resolving in email notifications?
Using: NPM 12.1
I recently "cleaned up" some old alerts (reformatting/standardizing, adding data, etc) and I used the web UI to choose all the variables to add to the alert trigger/rest actions. All actions send emails. It appears some variables will not resolve, while others do (in the same sent email).
Anyone experience this or use these variables and it works for them? I could go back to using the "old" variables (like $NodeName or similar) but I wanted to use whatever is "current" which should be what the UI populates and what others will be using if they build/edit their alerts. I found a single recent post on Thwack with a similar issue that indicated "the reset action was failing" but that shouldn't cause issues with the trigger action, no?
Here's an example email:
Email subject:
in template: ${N=Alerting;M=Severity}. ${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.Caption} CPU usage is greater than 90%
in email:Warning.${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.Caption} CPU usage is less than 90%
Email body:
Host info:
IP Address: ${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.IP_Address} <- This fails to resolve
Notes: ${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.CustomProperties.AutomatedNoteForServer} <- This fails to resolve
CPU info:
Usage: 27 % <- This resolves.In the template it is: Usage: ${N=SwisEntity;M=CPULoad}
Alerting system info:
Sent from: Orion on ${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.Engine.ServerName} <- This fails to resolve
Alert name: GROUP:Test. EVENT:CPU Usage. SEVERITY:Warning <- This resolves. In the template it is: Alert name: ${N=Alerting;M=AlertName}${CrLf}
Alerted at: Monday, January 22, 2018 2:54 AM <- This resolves. In the template it is: Alerted at: ${N=Alerting;M=AlertTriggerTime;F=DateTime}
Details: https://<REDACTED>/Orion/NetPerfMon/NodeDetails.aspx?NetObject=N:2657<- This resolves.In the template it is: Details: ${N=SwisEntity;M=DetailsUrl}
NPM 12.2 Upgrade Experience Feedback?
Anyone have any upgrade experiences for the general release?
We are looking to upgrade our entire SW suite in addition to NPM and would like to hear any feedback.
Also, is the RC code the same as the GR code?
Thanks in advance
Filter Active Alerts on Dashboard
Not sure if this is possible, but right now I have Node Alarms on the summary dashboard with Filter Nodes (SQL), filled in to only show the nodes I want. Works great, Dashboard is extremely useful and I'm watching it most of the day.
Soon we are going to a fully redundant network. In theory, Node Alarms won't exist because nothing will go down. BGP Neighbors will be lost and links will go down, but the Node will always be pingable.
We have an alert setup for "Alert me when a neighbor goes down" which works, but shows up on the All Active Alerts screen (we also have email alerts setup for "neighbor down"). Alerts can be searched, acknowledged etc on this page.
If I add "Active Alerts" to the dashboard, it works, but I'm unable to filter or search. Edit only allows changing the title and subtitle.
How can I only see the Active Alerts that I want to see instead of all alerts on the customized dashboard?
I understand I can keep a tab open for active alerts, but would really like to have a one-stop awesome, useful dashboard.
NPM 12.0
Thanks,
Wayne
Deploying Virtual Appliances
Are you comfortable with deploying virtual appliances?
We're discussing ways to deploy new products that may interact with your NPM (and other SolarWinds) deployments and one of our options is a virtual appliance.
How to change the Add Node default SNMP Community String value
I'm just going to throw this info out here because I couldn't find it while searching. I know this has been covered before, because I had done it once a couple years ago.
We don't use "public" as our community string for SNMP, so it's just one of those things you finally get annoyed with enough to go poking around.
For my visual aid today, this is what I got tired of clicking on:
I sometimes can't recall what i did a couple minutes ago; so remembering exactly something I did one time a couple years ago was pretty much not happening. I decided to start looking at the Orion web files because that was about as specific as my memory could serve; and even then not entirely confident.
A couple of folders later and using Windows cmd "findstr public *" I located my treasure.
This file:
C:\inetpub\SolarWinds\Orion\Nodes\Controls\SnmpInfo.ascx
This line:
<asp:TextBox OnTextChanged="SNMPSettingsChanged" ID="tbCommunityString" runat="server" Text="public" CssClass="CommunityStringTextBox disposable" AutoPostBack="True"></asp:TextBox>
SMS Alert Using Send a Get or Post Request to web server
Hello,
We can use the below method to trigger SMS Alert without having any third party tool, If the Provider has the option of Submitting a message through HTTP(S) API
http://URLFORHTTPSAPI?user=USERNAME&pass=PAssword&senderid=SENDERID&mobile=XXXXXXXXX&lang=0&message=${N=SwisEntity;M=ComponentAlert.ComponentName}" of Application "${N=SwisEntity;M=Application.ApplicationAlert.ApplicationName}" on ${N=SwisEntity;M=Application.Node.Caption} is in a ${N=SwisEntity;M=ComponentAlert.ComponentAvailability} state
One action can trigger SMS to one recipient, you can add multiple actions as required.
Service-now integration and ticket creation errrors
Hi,
My client have been a solarwinds-user for about 6 months, and just recently we've started seeing a behaviour which I cannot understand.
So, you have one device/node that goes offline. Solarwinds creates the information shown in the dashboard and creates a ticket into service-now. From here all is fine and dandy.
When the node then goes up again, solarwinds registers this as online once again. So, we're back to normal now with all nodes online. Here the ticket in service-now are closed.
Fast forward 6 months and the node goes down again! Now solarwinds sends the alert to THE SAME ORIGNAL INCIDENT created 6 mothns ago. It doesn't create a new, it re-uses the old ticket that was created 6 months ago.
This is a major problem since the case is not reopened. Its still in closed state.
In this scenario I would like to see a new incident, rather than using an old that have already been resolved.
I've talked to the support about this, and they claim this is "expected behaviour".
Am I doing something wrong here? If the products is designed this way, and there's no way around it. We need to look for alternatives.
Help me thwack community.
You're my only hope.

Health Sensor for a Ten Gig interface on a Cisco 4503E
Hello!
I am evaluating NPM, and I noticed that the Hardware Health sensor is showing a "Major" state, and "Warning" status for 5 of my 6 10 gig interfaces. The errors are for Bias Current Sensor, and Supply Voltage Sensor. Also a Receive Power sensor for one of the interfaces.
The problem is, only 2 of those interfaces are even being used and shutdown.
How do I get the hardware sensor to stop monitoring 10 gig interfaces that I'm not using?
SQL database doubled after upgrade from 2012 R2 to 2016
We ran into an issue we have a fairly new issue. I recently upgraded SW to the newest versions. In doing so, we needed to migrate our SW database from 2012 R2 over to 2016. When we did that and our database doubled. It was around 12 - 13 GB and now its about 25 - 330 GB. IF anyone has any suggestions or reasoning on this please let me know.

ASA Insight showing double session information
I got the ASA Insight on my firewall to check Remote Access VPN Status, but I got twice or even three times the information for the session with the same user, the profiles I'm checking just have permission for 1 concurrent session.
As you can see in the image, it has both the same information, but there are some cases where the information differ for the same user.
Advanced Alert SWQL Query Question
I am creating an alert with a custom SWQL query variable in it and I cannot get the actual data to show up. Here is my SWQL variable:
${N=SWQL;M=SELECT I.NodeID, I.InterfaceID, I.Name, N.NodeID, ICP.ifCustName, ICP.ifCustID FROM Orion.NPM.Interfaces AS I INNER JOIN Orion.Nodes AS N ON I.NodeID = N.NodeID INNER JOIN Orion.NPM.InterfacesCustomProperties AS ICP ON I.InterfaceID = ICP.InterfaceID WHERE I.NodeID = ${N=SwisEntity;M=NodeID} AND ICP.ifCustID > '1'}
This is supposed to be grabbing all interfaces on the defined NodeID that have a customer ID in it and display the 'ifCustId' and 'ifCustName'. This works fine in both SWQL Studio and SQL (when I convert it to SQL), but in the Advanced Alerts, the only output I get is the actual Node ID, not the table of useful data I am looking for. Can variables be called from within an SWQL query in the advanced alert? A cursory search of previous posts indicates this shouldn't be a problem, but idk. Is there an issue with how my query is set up? This is a Node alert, by the way, so I am not sure if that makes a difference.
