On my last update to NPM it said that I would have to upgrade my server OS and SQL Server version if I wanted any additional updates to the product. Did I read this wrong? We are running Server 2012 and SQL. Is it a functionality issue in future updates? This is going to cause some issues in getting approval for an additional spend just to keep versions updated.
Orion/NPM - Why upgrade to Server 2016/SQL 2016?
Is there a published list of states for the "Status" field in the NPM Node database?
I am looking for a list of the various states of the Status field in the NPM database. Currently I have several SQL filters set up on "All Nodes" widgets that specifies Status <> 9, where Unmanaged nodes are not included in the list of Nodes displayed. In one widget, I display a list of nodes that have been down longer than 48 hours and don't want to see Unmanaged nodes in this list either, but even though I have a similar filter "Status <> 9" as part of the SQL filter the Unmanaged nodes are still displayed. Any thoughts or guidance?
Adding server behind DMZ
Hi all
We have a situation. Servers are placed in DMZ. they are pingable and file system is also accessible from orion server. But discovering via snmp and wmi is failed. ALL ports are allowed in ASA firewall as well as server. How can I add them
NetPath not seeing my L3 switch
I'm new to NetPath and just trying it out. I started with a simple service probe between my Orion host and a core switch on our remote network across the WAN. While NetPath did fill in most of the blanks, the one that has me scratching my head is the LOCAL core switch, the second hop in this picture. This is a node that is monitored by NPM, has full SNMP stats on it, and is the L3 router for my local network... but NetPath says it cannot communicate with it and there is "no response." What is misconfigured on this core switch that would prevent NetPath from communicating with it, even though it sees it as a (valid) hop in the path?
Where does the node detail Location field populate from for windows servers that are not domain controllers and are polled using wmi or icmp?
Where does the node detail Location field populate from for windows servers that are not domain controllers and are polled using wmi or icmp? Some servers have the information and some do not but I do not know where the information is being pulled from on the servers?
SSH Button
I would like to give access to NPM 12.1 SSH functionality to users that don't have NPM Node management rights.
I don't know, how to enable SSH button in Node details view for these users?
Root Level Group; Field in Alert
I have a large root level group of "Remote Sites" with 200+ remote sites grouped in. I'd like to create the logic of "If 5 group members in "Remote Sites" go down, then do X".
I don't see the ability to use root level or anything similar in the alert structure. I suppose I could use a custom property, but would be another place to maintain,
ELTEK rectifier cannot be SNMPv2c polled
My ELTEK Rectifier is imported in NPM using ICMP polling.
When I decided to change the polling method to "SNMP and ICMP" I get the message "Unable to validate this node with the supplied SNMP credentials"
The strange thing is that when I run snmpwalk tool with default settings (community - public, port - 161, SNMP version - 2c),
from the same machine, I get all available OIDs and contents
Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong?
Remote swis is not responding
Some of my users getting "remote swis is not responding" error while searching nodes in Solarwinds.
It's only for certain users, don't know why.
Somebody help me on this.
Thanks,

Orion HA installation error - "Can’t receive data from SolarWinds Administration Services"
I have run up a new instance of SolarWinds with a bunch of modules (below) and am trying to set up HA clusters for the main poller and an additional polling engine. I've run the Orion installer on the HA server and it can connect to the main Orion server but errors out while downloading the files from the main server with the error: "Can’t receive data from SolarWinds Administration Services" with a link to a related KB article (don't have a screenshot handy sorry). However, I don't think the KB article applies as the server definitely has the ports open and it is not taking longer than 30 minutes to copy (it errors within a minute).
I tried to contact support but they cannot help as it is not a licensed module, but at the moment the module won't be purchased if it can't be installed. The case number is #1178593 and they're going to pass it over to a sales engineer but I'm not sure they will be able to assist if it needs escalation.
- This is a new installation of SolarWinds (modules installed 3 weeks ago) and all latest hot fixes installed as of last week
- Modules installed (full module versions in the attached log file):
- NPM 12.1
- SAM 6.4.0
- NTA 4.2.2
- NCM 7.6
- VNQM 4.4.0
- IPAM 4.3.2
- SRM 6.4.0
- VMAN 7.1 / VIM 7.1.0
- Additional Polling Engine
- I have verified that each server can reach the other servers via hostname and IP address and I can telnet to the ports required from the HA servers
- The same issue occurs on both new servers that will become the HA servers (main and additional servers)
- Not all modules are licensed – some are still in the evaluation period (still active, time remaining - NTA, SRM, VMAN).
- I can confirm I can manually copy all the installer files between the servers quickly (takes less than a minute to copy)
- The servers are running the same OS (Windows Server 2012 R2) and have same specs (CPU, memory, disk).
- I tried disabling the antivirus – didn’t fix the issue
- No production HA license installed however the 30 day evaluation was enabled today
So I now have the following questions for HA:
- Any thoughts on the above problem so we install/enable HA?
- Do we have to reconfigure NTA FSDB server to use the HA VIP? Does the NTA FSDB initiate communications with the main server or does it only respond to request from the pollers/website?
- Do we have to reconfigure VMAN integration to use the HA VIP? How does VMAN handle the active/passive server swap?
- Is it possible to have HA change multiple VIPs on the server (i.e. a second NIC with another VIP)? These servers have two network interfaces and roughly half of the objects are polled via the second NIC. Polling should still be OK from the HA server NICs (and we'll confirm the IPs and HA VIPs are in the firewall rules), but what about receiving data? A workaround for now I guess would be to have syslog, traps, NetFlow be sent to the main poller (or additional poller) IP and HA IP - the passive server will have the services disabled so won't record traffic. It will mean duplicating network traffic but it would ensure the data is still received when a failover occurs.
I've attached the installer log file as well. It errors out at the same spot each time so I suspect it might have something to do with the NetworkAtlas hot fix because that file doesn't exist on the main Orion server in the C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Installers directory.

How many people connect to Solarwinds in your company?
So we might be getting to the bottom of my odd issues with Solarwinds and just wanted to see out in THWACK land what others have done.
We have our IT department and all of the users in the department have logins into Solarwinds. Are they all in Solarwinds at once? Not really maybe 4 of us at a time at most doing things in Solarwinds. I am the primary Solarwinds contact so any updates/nodes/alerting/etc I do. The infrastructure team usually handles all the Cisco ACI nodes.
Additionally I have created dashboards and alerts for different teams in our company for their applications to assist in monitoring and troubleshooting.
Support sent this article over that stated that only 10-20 people should be accessing the webserver at one time or it may cause issues - Server sizing recommendations
My questions -
1. Anyone else in THWACK land have this kind of setup with users and access?
2. Has anyone setup a separate webserver for Solarwinds?
3. Right now the App server has Orion Platform 2018.2 HF5, NPM 12.3, Cloud monitoring 2.0, SAM 6.6.1, DPAIM 11.1.0, VNQM 4.5.0, VMAN 8.2.1 HF 1, NetPath 1.1.3, IPAM 4.7.0, NCM 7.8, NTA 4.4.0 - So would it make sense to setup a separate 'access' server for the website? So the app server can run just apps? The App server is configured as an Enterprise app server.
4. How do you setup a separate webserver for access?
Thanks!
Dave
Single Sign-on (SSO)
I want to create a single sign-on where user will be prompted everytime he/she tries to access the orion web console.I have integrated few users with active directory and when they try to access the orion website it logs them in without asking for credentials, which is fine. In addition to it i want a pop up asking them to enter the windows credentials everytime they try to access the site and once the credential has been entered it will log them in to the web console automatically. I am also trying to enable SSL. can anyone help me how i can do it together.
DUO Two Factor Authentication with NPM IIS web login
Has anyone successfully setup DUO 2FA with SolarWinds Orion? Just for the login portion before users can view their devices in NPM.
Two Factor Authentication
Does the latest version of NPM now support 2FA, such as SecureID, Vasco, etc..?
Let's talk about Solarwinds High Availability. Do you want HA? Why? Do you have it? Why'd you get it? Does it work well?
If you don't have Solarwinds HA:
- Why not?
- Cost?
- Your company doesn't believe monitoring is important enough to support (with licenses, employee setup/support hours, hardware environment, etc.)?
- You've never thought about it?
- You just don't need it?
- You don't have time to set it up or to maintain it?
If you DO have Solarwinds HA:
- Why did you get it?
- How did you convince your company it is necessary?
- How satisfied are you with it?
- Have you set up HA for ALL your polling engines?
- What would you change about it?
- Have you seen the new HA administration view that shows all your standby / HA pollers, and that highlights any differences between them?
You can check out some of the HA views on your own Main Poller here:
- https://<YOUR SOLARWINDS MAIN POLLER ADDRESS OR DNS>/ui/ha/settings

Critical Files to backup - 2018
I found a post dated that was many years old so thought the question should be revisited.
What are the critical file to backup to be able to reliable recover?
This is what we have but would be a good thing to cover everything related in one spot.
Orion Platform 2018.2 HF3
DPAIM 11.1.0
NPM 12.3
NTA 4.4.0

Event summary based on Custom Properties
Hi all,
How do you setup an "events summary" widget to only show events from nodes with a specific custom property attribute? For example, if i have a custom property for all our nodes called "Network" populated with "Network A", "Network B" etc, and i just want a widget to show all events from "Network A".
Thanks,
Scott
SolarWinds Password Security
How are passwords stored in the Orion database? I know they are not clear text but are they encrypted or hashed and if so with what algorithms?
