Monitoring a Windows Dynamic Disk
It was brought to my attention that one of the disks we are monitoring on a Windows server a dynamic disk. I'm told that there are 5 disks assigned to the E drive, each allocated with 2TB. In Solarwinds it is only showing the E drive with 10TB total. Is there a way to break it up into 5 separate drives?
Thanks
Help me better understand our Alerts
Our Solarwinds team has set up Disk alerts at Warning, High, and Critical Thresholds.
From what I am told, they should apply to all disk volumes.
If I look at the Active Alerts, and filter down to volumes and to Critical alerts, I get a listing of a number of active critical disk alerts.
If I run a simple report, asking for all volumes running above the critical alert threshold of 95%, it returns me a listing of all volumes currently running above our critical threshold of 95%, but it is double the size of the Critical Active Alert data.
This tells me that all of my volumes must not be alerting.
If I look at the ones that are not showing on the active alert list, I see that in the box called:
Why does it not show the Warning and Critical Alerts?
All Alerts this Object can trigger (1)
ALL ALERTS
ALERT NAME | DESCRIPTION | SEVERITY |
_DiskUtilization_High | Triggered when disk utilization is between 90% and 95% on any device regardless of platform | Serious |
Solarwinds / Cherwell
Recently it was determined that we would be moving to the Cherwell ticketing system and I see that it does contain "some" integration with Solarwinds.
What experiences have you had regarding Cherwell with Solarwinds, and are there any tips/caveats you may have regarding the software?
We currently have a decent variety of Solarwinds Products, and it appears Cherwell to mainly work with SAM. I'm sure I can still send an alert based on email integration to form tickets (I hope?). Has anyone utilized that feature before, and how smoothly does it work?
Along with the Cherwell integration, we are in the process of redefining many of our procedures. No one enjoys receiving that 2AM on-call phone call by your help desk regarding a non critical circuit that is under ISP maintenance, but how is it that your organization has handled that hurdle of when should information be escalated?
What I am envisioning currently is to have a higher priority ticket created for those devices that require 24 hour maintenance (and the device goes down) that would provide information to the helpdesk to contact on-call if they receive that ticket. Another option is to create a map in Network Atlas with a group regarding those nodes with a simple "green/red button" from the group. If a critical node in the group goes down or is down for X minutes then the button goes red and they know it's of such a nature to escalate to on-call. While that may seem very low level, I was informed to make the process as simple and easy for the staff as possible.
How to find out on wich map (maps) is node located ?
How to find out on wich map (maps) is node located ?
We have a network with more than 8000 nodes, 42000 interfaces, there are more than 430 different maps in the system. It is literally impossible to open a network map to which a particular element is placed.
I have my own solution wich I will describe later. But it is unofficial and hard to maintain and final result is not 100%. My solution becomes more and more complicated with every new version of NPM. On 9.5 version it was simple with Map Maker , with 12.1 and Network Atlas it becomes to be nightmare.
Is there anybody who have the same problem, please ? Or how do you work with NPM without this function with such big amount of nodes and maps ?
I found only one simmilar request from KMNRuser (How to tell what map(s) a node is on - 1.11.2016) on Thwack. With no replays, with no solution.
I can't belive that only two network admins have this need , How the others take network topology overview when they are not abble to easily open network map with faulty node ?
So please, I would like to read experience of other users with localization of node on map.
I do not want to burden your mind with my description of the solution, I would like to see if and how others solve this problem.
I will describe my solution next Monday, I promise.
I can tell you, I asked for solutions at SolarWinds 5 to 6 years ago first time (and many times later). The solution has never been proposed to me.
Now I'm close to ending the use of NPM just for this (my guys - network admins and NOC operators do not want use NPM just because they cannot easily open map with node they want to see in topology layout)
World Map function is not usefull for this - geological topology is different than Network topology, they are not comparable (and because of more other limitations).
Thank you for all your suggestions
How to tell what map(s) a node is on
Is there a way to tell what maps a node is on?
Thanks,

Root Level Group; Field in Alert
I have a large root level group of "Remote Sites" with 200+ remote sites grouped in. I'd like to create the logic of "If 5 group members in "Remote Sites" go down, then do X".
I don't see the ability to use root level or anything similar in the alert structure. I suppose I could use a custom property, but would be another place to maintain,
Are your Orion server and SQL database server in the same Active Directory domain?
What should Network Topology Mapper next release focus on ?
A combination of both
Deploying Virtual Appliances
Are you comfortable with deploying virtual appliances?
We're discussing ways to deploy new products that may interact with your NPM (and other SolarWinds) deployments and one of our options is a virtual appliance.

Custom MIB Poller (Temperature) for HP servers
FYI: If you want to monitor the temperature of HP Proliant servers and you've installed SNMP and the Compaq Insight Management software. You can create a Custom MIB Poller using OID (1.3.6.1.4.1.232.6.2.6.8.1.4).
cpqHeTemperatureCelsius: This is the current temperature sensor reading in degrees Celsius. MIB value type should be set to Raw Value, and type is set to none.
Unfortunately, you can't yet perform math on the Custom MIB Poller to convert the value to Fahrenheit.Anyone else having issues with cortex queries and SQL server?
Just wondering if anyone else is having this issue. On July 27th we had some really weird lockups of Orion for about 30 mins and again the next morning. It was very similar to the port exhaustion issue but it would just make everything dog slow for some time and then finally Orion site would not load.
Support had me run these queries and it deleted rows in the database
delete from dbo.PendingNotifications
delete from dbo.SubscriptionTags
delete from dbo.Subscriptions
delete from dbo.ContainerMemberSnapshots
delete from dbo.LimitationSnapshots
Ran these and rebooted app server and that seemed to fix thing for a bit. Then support had me apply a hot fix to replace these files
And that broke the network atlas and also I started seeing DCOM connection errors.
So removed the HF and that still did not fix the issue. Rebooting the server fixed the issue. Anyone else with this issue - don't apply the hot fix.
What screens are you using to display NOC in Office
Hi All
I am trying to find a suitable Smart TV to display NOC pages in the office (wall mounted)
i was thinking around 55 inches
What are you all using for your screens for NOC pages
any recomendations ?
Thanks Paul
Large drives reporting incorrectly
I have large drives that are reporting incorrectly, are there any suggestions on how best to handle this?
I would be interested in seeing the exact formula that is used to calculate disk space including the data sources that the data is collected from. In my specific case this problem is on Linux systems.
I am pretty sure that there are other threads on this but I was unable to find any that seemed constructive and specifically on just this topic (though it's possible I just missed them).
Any suggestions or help on this would be much appreciated.
Below is a screen shot so you can see what I am referring to...
[Report] Devices Not Responding To SNMP, WMI Or Agent Queries
Alcatel Omniswitch CPU and Memory
Telco T-Marc 280 CPU and Memory
How do I add a SNMP device that does not respond to 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2.0?
I am trying to add a Cisco Unified SIP Proxy(CUSP) to solarwinds with SNMP. Every time I try to add it Orion gives me an error 'Node XXXXXXXXXX does not respond with the supplied read/write community string'. I found that I can walk the MIB from the the orion server, so I know that the device is responding to SNMP from the server. I did a packet capture and found that Orion is doing a request to 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2.0 and getting an error does not exist. It seems CUSP does not use this OID. So how do I get this device added? CUSP suports the uptime and all the traffic OID's I want to monitor.
Do you manage a Cisco Nexus with large configs?
As posted here, I'm looking for some large Cisco Nexus configs. Configured ACLs are desirable but not a hard requirement. We created an automated anonymize to make it a little bit easier to scrub them: https://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/Release/OrionNCM/Anonymizer-v1.0.zip
These will be useful for both NPM and NCM. Sometimes, for example with ASA, we have to understand the configuration of a device to poll it properly. If you're interested in helping, grab your full configs, run them through the automatic anonymizer, and do a final manual pass to confirm you're happy and anonymize any remaining values.
The configs can be securely uploaded here: https://Share.SolarWinds.com/?ShareToken=03F4D04CFCF2C2600BA651B9A7679F5496A53E56
Let me know if you have any questions. And thanks!
