Need help...Can Solarwinds accept traps from other tools and re-send it?

$

Hi All,

Need some help..

We have Solarwinds integrated to Zenoss tool. Now the requirement is to have a refresh interval between the two.

So Zenoss will send traps to Solarwinds and then Solarwinds should capture and resend them so that incase any alert is closed by mistake in Zenoss then as per refresh interval it can be re-sent.

Any help would be appreciated.

  1. 1. What was life like before using Solar Winds? (Include what you were using and why you decided it was time for a change)

Before this product I am using simple product like Ipscan, manage engine network monitoring, network analyzer software. This product not fulfils my requirement. So I go for any other option.

2.    Which Solar Winds product(s) saved your bacon?

NPM

3. Did you consider other options, and why did you choose Solar Winds?

Network performance monitor provides a very easy interface to use and maintain it. Other tools took too long to implement and being able to continuously maintain them became full time job.

    4. How has life been since you've rolled out Solar Winds in your environment?

Network performance monitor help me to found out network problems in a minutes. And also very simple to use in any type of network. Its alerting feature  is very unique feature.

Cisco IOS Report

Hi guys,

I need some help with my Cisco IOS report.

I have modified the one there is in SW, so I can get some graph on what devices is running what ios version.

But I am seeing a small issue that I hope you guys can help me with.

I found this SQL script here in the forum

SELECT N.IOSVersion, DD.Date, SUM (CASE WHEN Mult = 0 THEN -1 ELSE 1 END) AS Count

FROM Nodes N

-- ${ToTime} - bug has to be there

cross join (

SELECT DATEADD(mi,-30, GETDATE()) AS Date, 0 as Mult

  UNION all

SELECT GETDATE() AS Date, 1 as Mult

  UNION ALL

SELECT DATEADD(mi,30, GETDATE()) AS Date, 0 as Mult

) AS DD

GROUP BY IOSVersion, DD.Date, DD.Mult

ORDER BY DD.Date

and that is ok, but if you look here in my graph list it shows around 160 devices there dont have a ios version.

How can I get this fixed so my IOS report will work as intended.

Hope someone can help me out here.

Orion Hardware Heath occasionally reporting 'Other' senors as Unknown

$

Lately, Orion has started to report some switches as having 'Other' hardware with a status of Unknown.

For example, I will have a switch that has Hardware health monitored. Under hardware heath there are sensor groups. In 'Fan', I have a 'Fan Sensor' reporting as Good. In 'Power Supply' I have 4 Power Supply Sensors and 2 External Power Supply Sensors reporting as Good. In 'Temperature', I have an 'Over-temperature Sensor' reporting as good.

For some reason, Orion will suddenly decide that there is also an 'Other' grouping, with duplicates of all the existing sensors, all with a status of Unknown. I have tried to SNMP walk the MIBs to see if the switch is really reporting that, but it seems like Orion only ever gets one poll with this info, because next poll, it clears.

This is happening with several switches so I don't believe it is a single bad switch.

Has any seen this issue? I can provide more information if needed.

Tell us your "Unknown" devices!

Sometimes devices show up in Orion as "unknown".  Those devices need to be added to our SysObjectID database.  We know about lots of them, but we'd like to hear which items you need.

 We need:

SysObjectID (which you can find in Node Details) in System Manager.

Monitor VPN Tunnel

I'm trying to use the Custom MIB Poller to monitor the status of a VPN tunnel on a Cisco ASA.  Has anyone figured out how to do this?

I've found the following OID in the CISCO-REMOTE-ACCESS-MONITOR-MIB but the Custom MIB configuration wizard only lets me enter the first portion into the system.  It appears that the OID is made up of the OID plus a three digit number which is unique to each tunnel.  Thus, I cannot enter the ??? portion of the OID so as to look at that particular tunnel.

1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.171.1.2.3.1.7.???

Any ideas?

Upgrade question

I will be upgrading all our modules early next month.   This is my second upgrade and I thought last time there was a tool that would allow techs to be able to see device status outside of Solarwinds while the upgrade was going on.  (outside of the engineers toolset)

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

UnDP transform help?

I'm trying to get a transformation working on my PDU's.

I currently have this: avg({rPDULoadStatusLoad.1}, {rPDULoadStatusLoad.2}, {rPDULoadStatusLoad.3})

All three of those pollers are assigned to a node, and the transformation is assigned to the node as well.

I generated a report, and this is what I get:

rPDULoadStatusLoad.1 = 29

rPDULoadStatusLoad.2 = 40

rPDULoadStatusLoad.3 = 70

rPDULoadStatusLoadAvg = 2

Am I doing it incorrectly?  If so, is there something I can read on it?

Does Orion's database "verify patch" option require Windows and SQL patches to be verified?

One of our DBA's noticed the Solarwinds Orion database (running on one of his SQL servers) has a "verify patch option" in the app info.

Does Orion's database "verify patch"  app require Windows and SQL patches to be verified?

Is this option present just for the initial installation of the Orion database?

I looked for this in Thwack, missed any references--perhaps buried in all the SQL Management Application pages?

Machine Type missing specific model information

We have recently added a Cisco ASR1001-X Router to Orion for monitoring.  What we have noticed is that Machine Type is only displaying Cisco.  Our older device shows up correctly as Cisco 3945SPE250.  I downloaded the latest MIB and installed yesterday. Afterwards I s/s the Orion services.  Checking today the Machine Type still only shows Cisco.  Is there something additional i need to do in Orion or on the device to correct this?

Question regarding interface 'Custom Bandwidth' settings

$

Hi all,

I have an interface I am monitoring in NPM. We purchased 500x500 Mbps of bandwidth from our provider and so I had set that as the 'Custom Bandwidth' values in the interface properties.

Our provider allows us to burst above that speed so today we had a period of time where 700+ Mbps was passing through the interface. We have an alert set up that is supposed to let us know if this interface is exceeding 95% utilization. The alert did not trigger and when I looked into it the Out bps values in the database for the polls during this time were all NULL (the In bps values were still populated).

So my hunch is that it must not record values for a poll if they exceed what the Custom Bandwidth value is set to. I wanted to come on the forum here and ask if anyone could confirm for me if this is the case or if what I observed in this incident should not have happened.

Adding nodes to a group by dynamic query of node name

Hi,

First time poster - please be gentle!

I am trying to add nodes to a group in NPM using dynamic query. I'd like to add all nodes whose name contains 'B12345' to a group. However, although I can choose 'orion object is node', when I add a condition, I cannot find 'name' in the drop down.

I have worked around this by populating the CustomerID field with 'B12345' and that is available in the drop down, but it's an extra step I'd like to not have to take.

Am I being thick? Surely this is one of the simplest queries that I'm trying to do?

Thanks,

Graham

We will use the Aruba OID for our CPU and memory reporting while the Nexus OID will be used for alerting.

Thanks in advance.

Node names changing to polling IP

What would cause node names to randomly change from a friendly (and sometimes manually set) name to the polling IP?  Happens across 3 separate NPM environments.  Persists through multiple versions of the product.  Only happens to Windows nodes.

Database Maintenance running or hanging ?

$

Hi All,

I have a NPM 10.6.1 and recently it runs maintenance very long time. Usually it start on 00:15 and complete within 1 to 2 hours.

Sometimes it was delayed and complete between 1pm - 2pm but for the past 2-3 days, it always in the state "Removing older data from Traps" and complete around 7pm - 9pm.

I'm not sure whether the process is hang or it is running.

Can anyone advise anyway we can check whether the maintenance is running or the process is hang.

Thank you very much in advance.

Eric

Bad trap packet received from Node with IP XX.XX.XX.XX. Error description : Unknown user and engine. Packet discarded

ERROR TrapService.TrapService - Bad trap packet received from Node with IP 192.168.1.1. Error description : Unknown user and engine. Packet discarded

Why receiving such Events when Node sending the Traps to Orion

SNMP V3 Trap packet will be verified against the SNMP Authentication for the Node in order to translate encrypted trap information

You can easily reproduce the issue by changing the SNMP information .

You will need to make sure the SNMP information sent by the Node within Trap  is matching against the Node in Orion DB

Following needs to be verify . (Edit the Node in Orion ) (Note down the SNMPV3 Username)

Issue # 1

nodesnmp.JPG

You can also verify the user name from the Nodes table in Orion DB as below.

DBNode.JPG

You will need to Run the Wireshark on Orion server  filter the traffic for Traps sent by the Node and verify the User name should be matching when received the Trap

In below packet capture example where Trap sent by the  Node 192.168.1.1  user ABC which caused the above Event that should correct in the Node .

user.JPG

Following example included where the correct SNMP user is been sent by the node within Trap information

correct user.JPG

Resolution

So in nut shell you will need to make sure the Node is sending Traps with the same SNMP user account  what is been used in Orion when adding the Node . If it will not match you will have the above Error Event in Orion. Trap packet will be entertained only if sent with correct SNMP User .

Issue # 2.

You will  noticed that the IP address in the error message was actually assigned to an interfaces on the routers and that the traps were being sent from this  interfaces.

Since the SNMPv3 credentials are used by the router and not the interfaces you then  needed to find a way to source all traps from the router's Loopback address themselves.

Resolution

The easiest way to do this was to enter the following line within the SNMP portion of the router configuration.

"snmp-server trap-source Loopbackxxxx" Where xxxx is the loopback # that the router's IP address is assigned to.
