To SaaS or not to SaaS, that is the question.

Dedicated DB for Orion NPN & NCM

Orion keeps having issues communicating with the SQL database.  My server guys keep telling me Orion is overtaxing the DB server that is shared with several other mission critical databases.  My thought was to take them out of the loop and just get myself a dedicated SQL server for Orion.  If I went that route, what kind of specs would I need to run efficiently?

The other option is to make Orion stop overtaxing the current server.  I had been running everything with default polling.  I have 267 nodes, polling 2597 interfaces.  I made the mistake in the beginning of selecting all up interfaces for polling.  Ive been going through and removing interfaces that don't need to be polled, and setting the polling time to 120 seconds in an attempt to reduce stress on the SQL server.  Am I going overboard with what I have now and expecting a typical shared SQL server to be able to handle it, or am I doing something wrong that is killing the server?

Any comment would be appreciated.

Node Down report in a time window

Hi All,

I'm trying to produce a report based on node down alerts over a 7 day period but to ignore alerts generated over night, say between 10pm and 5am.

Any ideas?  I've tried to use the web report writer and the reporter builder both clients seem to need a date specified before I can specify a time.

Thanks

Mark

Wireless heat map

I have configured a couple of wireless heat maps.

My issue is that when I run the map I get the following error:

Automatic re-generation from 12/1/2015 11:15:59 AM was not successful. Try to generate in the Network Atlas manually and updated map will be visible here.

Last error message: 'There is no available engine to process the WirelessHeatMap generation.'

I am new to Solarwinds and have no idea what I am looking for.

Can someone send me in the right direction?

Thanks

We just installed a bunch of UCS Mini's and adding them into solarwinds neither of the two CISCO health mibs pull back any data, leaving their hardware health in 'Unknown' state.

The two MIBs are CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB and CISCO-ENVMON-MIB

Any one else have this issue?

Obtaining Aggregated Baseline Performance Data

Hello Thwack!

We are in the planning stages of running a test case of our production workload in our brand new NSX environment and want to compare metrics from that test in vSphere 6 to current performance markers within our older vSphere environment. I am trying to rationalize and obtain data from SRM/NPM/QOE/NTA to get metrics such as server-to-server bw/latency stats, server-to-internet bw/latency stats, disk io rates from our storage system, overall cpu/memory usage, session creation/destruction rates, etc etc etc. I am used to viewing this sort of data on a per-VM or per-host or per-volume basis, but I am unfamiliar with how to export that data in general and aggregate it in useful ways that I can present to my peers. Is there any white papers, Solarwinds provided guidelines, threads on thwack, or any links for best practices or guides in how to do this? This would be the first time I get to use this Solarwinds environment to validate a large project we are working on and I am excited with the data I have - it's just a matter of exporting/showing it.

What should Network Topology Mapper next release focus on ?

Select your biggest pain point from this list.

Of course any additional comment to this page would be great (e.g. second biggest, pain point not listed below...)

Do you have a "Network" wish list for the new year? Share it, please?

What are the things you WISH you could do for your network?  No holds barred, no budget restrictions, but outside of that it would be fun to see your practical ideas to make life better for you & your peers and your clients.  Some things I'd wish for:

  • Budget to place enough network switch ports in every Network Room so that every data drop could be patched.  Why?  Because then I could patch every port with a custom length cable, make every switch front and patch panel front beautiful and Velcro'd in place, and no one would ever have to begin building spaghetti messes in there again.  Because no one would need to enter the Network Rooms except to add or remove network hardware.  Of course I'd have NAC in place, so there'd be no security holes.  Anyone could patch in anywhere, and they'd automatically be put in the appropriate segment depending on their device's security patching, anti-virus signature status, corporate access requirements, BYOD definitions, etc.
  • All the SolarWinds modules.  SLX licenses, plenty of hardware to support it all the right way.  And staff to learn the applications and services, who are devoted to getting a great single-pane-of-glass for the NOC and SOC and Help Desk and everyone in IT to use.  With the end goal of cutting down the amount of time to troubleshoot problems, and of reducing/preventing problems.
  • A dedicated job position for me to be the Orion Ambassador to all departments, so I could become familiar with all their apps and hardware and needs--and match them up with great views and reports in Orion modules that cater to their specialties.
  • A great Network Architect to join us and ensure we're doing it all the right way.  Collaborating deeply with every department, and especially with Security.  So ACI and ISE and FirePower/SourceFire/ASAs/ACS/Splunk/Everything worked the way it's supposed to.
  • A corporate wireless policy to forbid or limit staff from using the corporate wireless Guest network for personal use.  Yah, I'm a bit of a hard case there.  I'm paid to do my work at work, and I ought to be using my wireless data plan for my personal things on breaks.  Instead, I see pretty much everyone's cell phones killing the wireless resources and Internet pipe every time their manufacturer has an OS update.  I'd make 'em do it at home, but I'm sort of work-oriented.  My apologies--please don't flame me. I just want a fast, and reliable, and secure, and great wireless experience for the folks who actually need mobility to do their jobs--and for our customers.  But whoever thought wireless was fast and reliable and secure sure hasn't a clue about reality.
  • Triple my current staff level, so we can better deal with all the requests for new or changed networking needs, all while following industry and security best practices.  It's mighty hard to keep up with what's new and improved when you're understaffed and worried about the spinning plates falling off their poles.
  • A work environment that folks are clamoring to join.  Sometimes I see things in other companies that seem pretty fun and desirable.   I'd like to think my company was so excellent that we'd have no problem hiring anyone we need, when we need them.  Instead it typically takes eighteen months to find and hire a new Network Analyst.  It's funny--the pay's great for the region, and the region's amazing for things to do outside.

What would make your network life better, if you could get for some practical things that appear impossible for you now?

Ending Support for SQL 2005- Thoughts?

With the end of Microsoft's extended support for SQL 2005 rapidly approaching (Microsoft Product Lifecycle Search) we are investigating the possibility of announcing a future end-of-support for SQL 2005 for the Orion platform. We know the percentage of customers running 2005 dwindles daily, but wanted to pose the question to the community- anyone out there running 2005 that would have trouble migrating to a (slightly) more modern SQL version?

Cisco ASA as a Default gateway?

$

There has been over 1 million of Cisco ASAs built and deployed around the world in a past years (good job Cisco!). As not supporting SNMP protocol properly, they often complicate our lives when configured to be Default gateways, not allowing products like SolarWinds User Device Tracker to monitor what's behind. Do you use your ASAs as a Default gateways too? If so, what percentage of your network they route?

NOC issues

Hi

I have recently done a network scan with NTM (it is AWESOME, buy it!) to enable me to map out the network.

Having done all this, created the maps and transferred and tidied within Network Atlas I now have a NOC with 5 tabs showing various parts of our network.

The problem is, it cycles round the tabs 2 or 3 times then sticks unable to load the resource.  I have clicked to show a cached version of the map whilst it loads but to no avail.

As it stands I am having to remain connected to the PC streaming the NOC to refresh the browser each time it hangs.

Any ideas?
