Solarwinds not able to retrieve UCS information with UCS Central configured

We are attempting to monitor our UCS Domain using Solarwinds. We were able to create the node with SNMP and UCS credentials, connect to the UCS Master, and add the fiber switches as nodes. However, the blades were not clickable to add them as nodes and adding the Managment IP address as a node manually would not populate the UCS table.

Capture.PNG

What appears to be happening is Solarwinds is expecting the management pool IP address information to come through the UCS Master API. However, when UCS Central is used to manage the IP pool, the UCS Master does not report the IP's in the same manner. Solarwinds is unable to determine the actual pool information, nor is it able to connect to UCS Central to collect the information from there. This would appear to require an update from Solarwinds in order to correctly intergrate with a UCS Domain if UCS Central is part of the configuration.

This can be a very problematic for sites that have multiple UCS servers configured and wish to use UCS Central in order to manage their site.

Cisco WS-C3650-48PS-S Power monitoring

Hello all,

We have two of the above not stacked, they both have redundant power supplies. We want to add a node to alert us if one of the power supplies fails, but struggling to figure out how to get it to report the status of power supplies.

Has anyone added similar that could share their experiences?

Average Response Time Radial Gauge

I have a question regarding how the device is pinged from NPM.  I noticed this gauge and got a little excited.  It was indicating close to 400 ms average response time.  The node was also having higher memory utilization.  I pinged the device and always got similar to  "bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=124".  I then thought it could be that the Orion server is seeing this and remoted into the server and pinged the device with the same results.  What could be up???

Down Access Points in NPM 11.5.x

Hi guys,

In pre 11.5.x environment, a simple query would show you which APs have disappeared from the monitored controllers.

SELECT ap.IPAddress, ap.DisplayName

FROM Orion.Wireless.AccessPoints ap

WHERE Status=2

That query no longer works in NPM 11.5.x. Any idea where I should be looking instead?

Alerts and Group Filtering

Hello

I am using a very simple alert in order to get informed about interfaces going down. I have created several groups and I need to get informed for node interfaces going down only in one specific group (i.e. Group A).

Problem is, I'm getting alerts from node interfaces going down from other groups as well. I have triple checked and there are no same nodes being overlapped in different groups.

This is how I created the WEB alert.

Interface status is equal to down

AND

Group name is equal to Group A

After this simple alert didn't work for some time, I decided to play more advanced and use custom properties in Groups. This didn't work either (still getting alerts from node interfaces going down from other groups as well).

I feel that I'm missing something very simple here, any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

Embedding notes in a networ map

I like to know if there is a way to add or embed troubleshooting notes within a network map. We use network maps that are displayed on overhead monitors. In the remote node section on the map, I have embedded icons for each system type. Clicking on the icon opens a topology map for that specific system. It is at this point that I would like an option to click on an icon on the map that would open a reference document. The document should be Windows word or Powerpoint format.

Thanks.

Dependencies - with parent router to group of dependencies alerts

$

Hello all,

I have been digging through the discussions hoping to find one similar to mine. No luck!

My question is on dependencies and alerts. I have created a Group and added all my dependencies of a location to it. I have made the main router the parent to the child dependencies. When the parent sire router goes down i only receive the alert on the down parent. That much s correct. But when the parent comes up i receive the up alert for it and then an up alert for all the dependencies also.

I am trying to thin the amount of alerts i receive. If this worked as design i would only receive 2 alerts. the down & up of the parent.

Any ideas?

Alert Manager- Alerts with variables?

Hello all,

I am a newbie so please go easy on me.

I have 60 ESXI hosts that I want to create alerts for and am really hoping I do not have to make a separate alert for each host.

My hostnames are as follows:

c01esxihost01

c02esxihost01

c03esxihost01.... all the way up to 62.

Here is what I have so far:

Is there anyway I could make it something like this:  Node Name is equal to c**esxi01

I do see the "starts with" option, it would be nice if there was an "ends with"..

Any advice would be much appreciated.

thanks,

Bmoore

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to know the best way  to display a View on a TV screen for Each team.

The views are created.   I wanted to see if  we could tweak it or if there were any ` add ons` for TVs.

Every 3 minutes the screen refreshes  and  the seizing of the page changes and I have to scroll down to keep Only Solarwinds and the view..

Is there any way where I could hide the explore or even the chrome menu? without really having to scroll down every few minutes :-)

Thank you for your help.

NPM Upgrade with Additional Polling Engine

$

Hi,

We are in the process of upgrading our SolarWinds estate and I have a question which relates to minimizing monitoring downtime.

If we have an instance of NPM 10.4.2 and SAM 5.5 with an additional polling engine, is it possible to fail the monitored nodes over to one polling engine, upgrade that to 11.5.1 and then fail the nodes back over to upgrade the additional polling engine? Or do you have to shut down Orion Services on both polling engines?

Kind regards,

James

group member alert does not show what triggered the alert

I don't understand why there is group member alert available in Solarwinds. I setup email alert working well, but the system doesn't allow me to show which nodes or groups or group members triggered the alert. It seems group member alert doesn't want me know what triggered the alert. Anyone has an idea what I should do. Thanks

Adding Few more explanation here for Cisco Call Manager Showing 99% Memory Utilization in Orion .( just in case someone having this issue )

CallManager.png

The reason you are seeing 99% is due to the Cisco MCS returning back those values.

Why its doing this, you have to Open Cisco TAC.

NPM is returning back the values its being supplied with, in this case showing 99%.

Poller type: Used .

  1. N.Memory.SNMP.CpqHostPhysicalMemory =

Memory poller for OpenVMS systems which support proprietary CPQ-Host MIB

Poller utilizes GetSubtree request with two OIDs to gather total and used memory:

            cpqHoPhysicalMemorySize = 1.3.6.1.4.1.232.11.2.13.1.

            cpqHoPhysicalMemoryFree = 1.3.6.1.4.1.232.11.2.13.2.

Total memory is computed using this formula:

            memoryTotal = cpqHoPhysicalMemorySize * 1024

Used memory is computed using this formula:

            memoryUsed = memoryTotal - (cpqHoPhysicalMemoryFree * 1024)

MIB Walk shows:

            .1.3.6.1.4.1.232.11.2.13.1.0 = INTEGER: 3990 = cpqHoPhysicalMemorySize

            .1.3.6.1.4.1.232.11.2.13.2.0 = INTEGER: 60 = cpqHoPhysicalMemoryFree

memoryTotal = 3990 * 1024 = 4085760

memoryUsed = 4085760 - (60 * 1024) = 4085760 – 61440 = 4024320

PercentUsed = 4024320/4085760 = 98.496% = 99%

The "Memory" Usage and the "Physical Memory" Utilization are calculated differently by Orion NPM.

Memory:

The Memory is the sum of the memory used by the processes listed in the HOST-RESOURCES-MIB:hrSWRunPerfTable (1.3.6.1.2.1.25.5.1).

The OID used is the hrSWRunPerfMem (1.3.6.1.2.1.25.5.1.1.2).

Physical Memory:

The Physical Memory is calculated based on the values populated in the HOST-RESOURCES-MIB:hrStorageTable (1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2.2.3).

The OIDs used are hrStorageSize (1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2.3.1.5), hrStorageUsed (1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2.3.1.6) and hrStorageAllocationUnits (1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2.3.1.4) .

This tool can be used to view how the UCS is actually configured and required output by Solarwinds Support.

( Please Note : This is not the actual configuration down loader like as NCM )

Please run this tool - it will collect some data about UCS to xml file.

Then please check the file  how the UCS is configured.

Run it from CMD:

  1. UCSDownloadXML.exe /S:199.168.1.89 /U:User /P:password /O:output.xml

in a case you are using SSL:

  1. UCSDownloadXML.exe /SSL /S:199.168.1.89 /U:User /P:password /O:output.xml

Database transaction log is full - Recovery ( Simple Mode vs Full Mode )

$
0
0

Growth is either down to 2 reasons:
1 NO DISK SPACE
2 LDF Autogrowth restriction has been reached

First thing I would do is Change Recovery from FULL to SIMPLE if not done so already

http://knowledgebase.solarwinds.com/kb/questions/1359/Changing+Recovery+Model+of+database+back+to+Simple

Here is Good explanation of Simple VS Full Recovery:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189275.aspx

tttt.PNG

Transaction Log Size

The transaction log should be sized based on the amount of data modifications made to a database and the frequency of the log backups.
Large data modifications, such as data loads or index rebuilds should be taken into account when calculating a log file size.

In simple recovery model the transaction log should not grow as the interval between checkpoints (which truncate the log) is based on the amount of data modifications made.
If the log does grow, it may be that there are long-running transactions or transactions that have been left open. Either may indicate a problem with the application.

In full or bulk-logged recovery model, if the transaction log grows it may indicate that the frequency of data modifications has increased and as such,
the interval between log backups should be decreased. It may also indicate long running transactions or that the log backup jobs are not running properly.

RESOLUTION STEPS :-

.LDF file grows out of control, How to recover:
1.) Make sure recovery model is set for SIMPLE  and NOT FULL

http://knowledgebase.solarwinds.com/kb/questions/1359/Changing+Recovery+Model+of+database+back+to+Simple
2.) Backup the database, this will mark the data in the transaction logs as committed and no longer necessary.
3.) Shrink the database again to reclaim the log space. (PLEASE NOTE YOU MUST HAVE SOME FREE SPACE ON THE DISK IN ORDER TO RUN THE SHRINK )

How to: Shrink a Database (SQL Server Management Studio)

How to: Shrink a File (SQL Server Management Studio)

  1. 4.) If above doesn’t work as last resort is to detach the database (do not force it to detach if it gives an error that it can not detach, this will damage the database)
    once detached delete the .LDF file and reattach the database.
  2. 4.) Stop Orion Services.
    5.) In the SQL Mgt Studio or Orion Database Manger, right-click on the NetPerfMon database and choose "Detach".
    6.) Navigate to that directory where the MDF and the LDF files are stored, and delete ONLY the LDF file.
    7.) Go back into the database manager, right-click on your SQL server, and choose "Attach Database."

         at.JPG

        8.) Select the MDF file, and hit okay.

           mdf.JPG

         9) Remove the LDF file entry hit OK
     detach.JPG

It will recreate will 0KB LDF File automatically.

Future Proof so it doesn’t recoccur
After above all should be fine, but have you check LDF File growth doesnt reoccur.

Also once set to SIMPLE Recovery, LDF file should never really be over 1GB if all running smoothly.
But can also configure LDF to Restricted Growth, so say LDF File on Drive over 100GB Free,

  You could restrict LDF to few dozen GB just to be safe,
in case LDF growth reoccurred and LDF goes 100GB and brings down server due lack disk space.

How can i Examine / Open / Analyze what is in Transaction Log file ?

SQL Server transaction log format is not documented and therefore can’t be used to read data from it directly.

There are tools such as ApexSQL Log that can read the transaction log but it’s only because they probably spent a ton of time reverse engineering its format.

ApexSQL Log - SQL Server log explorer | ApexSQL

Options for reading are to:

a) figure the format on your own (not recommended)

b) get yourself a third party tool

c) using functions such as fn_dblog that are also not documented but can give you some details.

For more details please see the post below
