Emailed Reports broken after enabling SSL for Web Console

We recently enabled SSL for the web console of NPM.  Since then emailed reports contain the following error instead of the report:

Unable to retrieve url: http://SERVERNAME:80/Orion/Report.aspx?ReportID=73 using PDF type.

I've changed the name to "SERVERNAME" here, but it is just the windows hostname of the server.  I imagine there is a place that I haven't found yet where I can change the url to https and even perhaps change the server name to the FQDN, but I haven't found it yet.  Can somebody point me in the right direction?

Application Monitors and SQL errors in Orion

Solarwinds support is having a hard time figuring this out and I am getting some really bad support on this so hopefully someone else out there is having this issue and can help out. I recently updated to NPM 7.5.1, NetFlow 4.2.1, DPA 10.2.0, NCM 7.5.0, VNQM 4.2.2.  Everything ran fine for a good 5 days then on Monday Nov 29h the CPU starting spiking and Orion would not load correctly and the server would lock up until I was able to go in and terminate the process.  I have been working with SolarWinds support and they have been less than helpful.  What I have found out is the CPU spikes and the process associated with it is tied to the SAM IIS application monitor.  On the solarwinds server I can check the event logs and the connection to Solarwinds and SQL seem to have an issue but there is no lag or any access issues at all.   The servers are 2008 R2 and are built to Solarwinds specs.  Let me know if anyone has any ideas at all or can point me in a direction.   Thanks!

Deletion of unknown interfaces

Hello,

I am working on a clean up activity and require to delete the interfaces in unknown state for almost 1300+ nodes. I tried deleting the interfaces on manage nodes and then listed resources for a node and selected only the UP interfaces. But i see that the unknown interfaces are still showing up on the interfaces box.

Is there a way where i can have them not show up and have only the UP interfaces?

Also is there a way i can do this in a bulk rather than manually doing this on each node?

TIA,

Malcolm.

Adding a view to another view's TAB

Does NPM have the ability to add/import another view to a view's TAB on the left hand side?

I would like to do that to cut work down - just having related Views available as TABS on the left side of a view.

Thanks much,

NPM - Group Questions

$

I am new to using Solarwinds NPM, and these forums, so this might might be in the wrong place. I did do some research but did not find a definitive answer so I thought I would try here.

We are hoping to use groups in NPM as a container for nodes. For example we have 700+ sites that all have 3 or 4 switches at each site. We would like to make each site its own group, so when a user selects a group they see all the nodes (switches in this case) assigned to that site. We would like to use custom attributes for each of the groups for meta data like physical address, contact name, etc. This would mean there would be 700+ groups with custom attributes.

The trouble is I can not find a way to search for a group name once they are created. We can search for a node, but I could not find a way to get back to the group page (that lists all the other nodes for that site) from the node screen. Is there a custom search I can create to to search only for group names (Preferred)? Or maybe a way to get back to the a nodes group from the node screen? Am I missing a step?

Thank you in advance,

-Matt

Current process to rename a SolarWinds server

Can anyone tell me what the current steps are to rename a SolarWinds server?  I have NPM 12.0.1.  I think the last time I did a name change on the server I had to run the configuration wizard and maybe add the new server name to the websites table in the db and think there was a step to point all of the nodes to the new server name.  I can't seem to find the instructions I used last time.  Since it's been a few years since I did a rename of the server I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything.

thanks,

Jan

NPM 12 Switch Stack Alerts false positives

$

Has anybody else enabled the built-in alerts for Switch Stacks in NPM 12?  I've noticed that we're getting false positive stack member number change and stack master change alerts on switch stacks located in remote sites with poor WAN connectivity for monitoring.  My hunch is that the 'stack member number changed' and 'stack master changed' values are not staying consistent when a polling cycle is missed or incomplete.  Most of the poorly connected sites (India and China) actually aren't even stacks, they're just stackable switches in a stack of '1', so I know the member number or master status isn't actually changing.  I've checked the switch logs as well and don't see any interruptions or reboots occurring, merely the WAN link being lossy enough that polling failed.  I did have one actual 3 member stack in a better-connected Italy site have a brief WAN interruption that caused the same alerts.  The stack itself has no indication that any of the 3 members changed state, and all 3 member uptimes are the same 3 months.  All 3 members have configured member number and priorities as well.  All the change alerts come in pairs in the same minute, so the values in NPM are always what they were before the alerts triggered by the time I can look.

I'm suspecting the Solarwinds database might be recording a null or something when a stack member value can't be polled which triggers the false alert?  It's so quick though I can't catch what value is going into the database when the alert triggers.

Here's the sequence of events as seen on one switch:

Custom Universal Device Poller table

$

Hello,

I have created a new Universal Device Poller to report in Cisco serial numbers. Here are the instructions that I followed. I confirmed that Serial Numbers are being polled since they are displayed on the Summary page.

https://support.solarwinds.com/Success_Center/Network_Performance_Monitor_(NPM)/Create_a_Universal_Device_Poller_and_report_on_Cisco_serial_numbers

However, where can I find this data in the database? I need to query the Serial Numbers for each node. I was told on another post that I can find this information in Orion.NPM.CustomPollerStatusOnNodeScalar

http://solarwinds.github.io/OrionSDK/schema/Orion.NPM.CustomPollerStatusOnNodeScalar.html

However, the Serial Numbers are not in that table.

What table stores the mapping of Serial Number to each Node ID?

Thanks!

How to alert on a secondary node in a Juniper VC

$

So right now it does not appear to be an easy way to monitor the other members within a Juniper Virtual Chassis, this method works with a secondary device that is a routing engine, in most cases your core switches or edge switches. This method does not work for monitoring members within a VC that is not a routing engine, example your other IDF switches if you have more than 2. In NPM when you list resource on a Juniper switch you can see the Virtual Chassis Port (VCP), enable monitoring on these ports and create and up/down alert on the interface, If the switch is down or missing a cable you will be notified. I will be testing this on a staging setup and will update my post if it was 100% successful.

Events not generating emails after upgrading to NPM 12.0.1

$

Hi all. I've looked at different threads regarding emails failing out of NPM in general, but the traditional fixes aren't working for me. I've verified the SMTP server, I've sent test emails, and I get emails fine from NCM (which I installed the same day I upgraded NPM) - and the alerts appear to be firing fine on the alerts page/events page, but we've traditionally gotten emails for these events. I'm just not sure where to look to specifically troubleshoot emails with one portion of NPM and not Orion in general. All of the alerts that were there before are still turned on, but anything that shows up specifically on the "events" page is not generating an email like it was before. I've looked multiple times and cannot figure out where this is breaking. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Boost your server polling capacity with Stackable Poller license

Overview

This article provides information about FAQs asked by the customer based on the environments combined.

Environment

Orion Platform versions above NPM 10.6

Strongly recommended to have latest version of Orion

Detail

What a Stackable poller does?

All of us know SolarWinds SLX license you can montior up to 12000 Elements and beyond this you will need an Additional Polling Engine to monitor.

What is Stackable Poller idea

Stackable poller means license extension on polling  server  if your server hardware can handle it  , with the latest version of SolarWinds NPM, you can now install up to three unique polling engines on a single polling server, sharing a single IP address. Stackable polling engines enable you to effectively triple the polling capacity of a single server so you can get benifit of available server hardware within the existing installed enviornment

Further it will help you to monitor more Elements ( Nodes/Volumes/Interfaces/Services ) without having any dedecated servers to be confirmed and manage so its less overhead for the I.T staff to manage .

How can i check my Server current hardware meeting this requirments

For more informaiton MINIMUM Hardware Requirments see below.

SolarWinds Orion server hardware requirements

How many Stackable Poller license I can have on the Single Server?

Up to three total polling engines may be installed on a single server (i.e. one primary NPM
polling engine with one or two additional polling engines on Primary Server  or three additional polling engines on
the Additional polling server ).

Note: A stack requires only 1 IP address, regardless of the number of APEs

Can I install Stackable Poller on my existing Additional Polling Engine?

Yes 'Stackable Poller' is basically only extending the licensing capability on the Poller  you can have multiple Stackable poller on your existing Additional Poller It can be update by Smart Bundler  .

How can I update my  Poller for Stackable Poller?

On the  Poller it can be updated by Smart Bundler.

It means that by additional poller package downloadable from customer portal (not the Individual Downloads, but the Main Additional Poller Installer also called Smart Bundler).

How to install Stackable Poller on my Primary Polling Engine?

In this example I am assuming we are implementing Stackable Poller on the Main Poller (that has enough resources to tackle additional load)
As you are aware a single poller can tackle upto 12k elements
Also there is no special installer for Stackable Poller
You will need a license to be purchased as for Additional Polling Engine
You will go into your Customer Portal & download the Additional Poller Smart Bundler  (not the Individual Downloads, but the Main Additional Poller Installer also called Smart Bundler)
Basically when you will run Additional Poller Smart Bundler this installer will say on the main poller that everything is already installed and ask you if you want extend license.
Now simply key in the license of the Additional Poller in the wizard
It will never install anything on main poller it only just update the license
So the customer has got extra capability to fully utilize his server
Also after the license has been applied you can open the License Manager and you will see another entry in the Lincense Manager as following

On Primary Polling Engine it will take up to 2 MAX Additional Polling Engine license keys

On Additional Polling Engine it will looks like this

You will have the message "The machine has reached to license limit" after that therefor it will only be able to take up to 3 licenses.

So if I have have mutiple modules installed on the Primary Poller (do I have to install all the other modules as well , because Smart bundler will download say APE SAM , APE UDT , APE NPM)
so when I run the Smart Bundler on the Primary poller (it will not say that Primary Poller is already installed on this machine)

Yes, it will say on main that everything is installed and ask you if you want extend license
so it will never install anything on main, just update license

If I will install Stackable Poller on my primary server it will increase the capacity to 24K elements to tackle?

It will ask you on main to add license key for additional poller (means 24k elements). Once you run it again, you can add another AP license (means 36k elements) and if you run it third time,

it will say  This machine has reached its license limit .  The same functionality is for Additional Poller installation  And yes, Stackable poller means license extension on polling  server

My Orion Website & Server is very slow what should i check quickly ?

$

This article provides quick information about  your current environment and health check , Further it  will help you address the most common reasons of  performance issues on to your server without sending the diagnostics to SolarWinds support  .

Your check list

✔Server Hardware

✔Orion DB Size / settings / options

✔Check your Website pages configured / Customization

Lets collect System diagnostics as below.

Navigate to Start -> SolarWinds Orion -> Documentation and Support

Launch the gray icon for Orion Diagnostics.> Click "Start"

This program will generate a .zip file as output.

( Unzip in a folder ) Right Click >  Select Extract Here .

Server Hardware

Lets check your System Hardware first if this even near to the Solarwinds MINIM recommended.

Go to the SystemInformation folder > Open the SystemInfo.txt file

You will be able to find the System hardware specification  below is an example where system is only assigned with 2 Physical CPU Sockets /

below is an example where the system is only assigned two CPU PHYSICAL SOCKETS which is below Solarwinds MINIMUM recommendation .

You must have to have MINIMUM 4 PHYSICAL CPU SOCKETS here .

System Type:               x64-based PC

Processor(s):              2 Processor(s) Installed.

                           [01]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1600 Mhz

                           [02]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1400 Mhz

Total Physical Memory:     49.082 MB

Available Physical Memory: 39.408 MB

Virtual Memory: Max Size:  56.250 MB

Virtual Memory: Available: 45.376 MB

Virtual Memory: In Use:    10.874 MB

Now open the SysInfo.csv file and check the further current CPU load on the System and CPU GHz level .

Below in an example where the CPU load in around 70% on the current system due to two main reasons .

Parameter

Value

OSVersion

Windows Server 2012 R2 (Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0)

CPUInformation

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2420 0 @ 1.90GHz

CurrentCPUUssage

70 %

TotalPhysicalMemmory

49152 MB

FreePhysicalMemmory

39802 MB

FreeVirtualMemmory

45843 MB

FreeSpaceInPagingFiles

7109 MB

CurrentTimeZone

xxxx Standard Time (UTC+01:00:00)

Low Physical Sockets assigned

Low CPU power less then 3.0 GHz

Further check how much memory is assinged and available for the system and check the TaskManager which application is consuming high memory .

In above case the System Hardware is not even near to the recommended SolarWinds production deployment therefor the CPU load will remain high therefor System resources.

The following table lists minimum hardware requirements and recommendations for your SolarWinds Orion server.

Installing multiple SolarWindsOrion Platform products on the same computer may change the requirements.

Hardware requirements are listed by SolarWinds NPM license level.

These minimum requirements are for the Orion Platform. Products that run on the Orion Platform may have different requirements, such as different OS or memory requirements.

Consult your product-specific documentation for the exact requirements.
