Some Cisco 3850 switches not showing in report

$

0

We are looking at the Cisco stack report and see where some of the switches are missing. It seems if I leave the class qualifier off I can see where the node(s) in question do not have a class associated with them.

I have compare several of these nodes to others that work and they are the same IOS version, etc.

Ideas?

NPM - Customize Page Resource Modification

$

I would like to modify one of the Customize Page Resources.  The resource in question is "Down Nodes".  I would like to be able to only display those nodes that are down given a specified Custom Property.  For this instance, I would like to specify all nodes that are down with a Custom Property of L1_Region=Central.

Any custom queries would be helpful.

thanks,

Eric

What We're Working on for NPM (Updated October 25th, 2016)

Since the release on NPM 12.0 we've been hard at working building the next round of exciting functionality and improvements in existing functionality.  I'm pleased to share the following list of items we're working on:

  • Improved Meraki Wireless Support - Full support for Meraki wireless access points
  • Silence Alerts - Silence Alerts While Still Monitoring
  • Network Insight for Cisco ASA - Covering things like VPN tunnel monitoring, ACL visibility, and improved platform health (H/A status, hardware health).
  • Faster and web based simplified product upgrades and installation of hot fixes
  • Integrated Disaster Recovery Engine
  • Windows Authentication for SQL DB - Orion can optionally use AD user credentials to authenticate to the SQL database instead of SQL local credentials.
  • Performance Analyzer - Pull metrics, statuses, events and other data sets into a single view with a shared timeline for correlation and faster troubleshooting.
  • Import nodes from file with custom properties

NPM REST API Device Type

Hello, I am writing a script to query inventory data from the REST API.

I need a field that specifies the device TYPE of each node, such as "Server, Network Device, Storage, etc..."

I tried EntityType, InstanceType, MachineType, ObjectSubType but none of those specify the device type.

Of course there is IsServer but we also need to be able to specify if it is a network device or a storage device or physical server or virtual machine and so on.

Serial Number or UUID to query via REST API

$

I am using the REST API to query inventory data from our SolarWinds NPM. I need a unique value that exists in our other tracking systems such as Serial Number OR UUID.

How can I expose Serial Number or UUID to the API?

I read some information about creating a custom poller to expose Serial Number in a report. However, I need this data available to query in the API.

Any suggestions on how to set that up?

Trouble adding Cisco to NPM

I have a Cisco 2960S running SW Version 15.0(2)SE6 and I'm trying to add it to NPM using SNMPv3. Every time I edit the node properties and add the SNMP credentials it shows test failure. The configs I put into the switch are as follows (group, user and password changed):

snmp-server group SOLARGroup v3 auth access 98

snmp-server user SOLARUserSOLARGroup v3 authshaSOLARPwrdprivaes 256 SOLARPwrd

snmp-server host X.X.X.X version 3 authSOLARUser

Here is an image of how I'm putting the credentials into SolarWinds:

SNMPv2 works however, we are required to use SNMPv3 due to our security baselines. I'm just wondering if anyone has had this issue before and if there is a solution. I'm not sure if I'm missing a config in the switch or something is wrong in solarwinds. Please, if anyone can assist with this issue it would be greatly appreciated.

NPM Universal Device Poller Chart

Good day!

I've created an UnDP and assosiated it with OIB, with device, added to WebGUI - this works perfect. BUT, I'm not able to label it. Actually I have two problems to solve.

1) Names are stored is another MIB branch. So my chart is a kind of ugly (have a look at an image attached). I have a dozen of rows inside one OID. They are polled all at once. Is there some way to divide them one from another? Is it possible to take only certain row from OID?

2) I can't choose data for report from this UnDP. I'd like to report only on certain data, but not being able to split them in different pollers, I have a lot of problems matching those numbers with description in my notebook (yes!).

It looks like i need to transform my results somehow. Here's an options for transform.

http://www.solarwinds.com/documentation/en/flarehelp/npm/content/npm-universal-device-poller-–-transform-results-definit…

Parse looks like a good option. But, as far as i understand, it allows only to transform a result, not to take one row from the whole table. Please, help.

SNMP Informs

Hey there,

I am trying to find any updated information on whether or not NPM supports SNMP informs, yet.  All the information that I've been able to find says it does not, but it is a bit outdated.  I've also checked whitepages and documentation and have not been able to find anything on this functionality.  So I'm learning towards "no", but would just like verification if anyone knows for sure.

Thanks!

I have had some complaints from some of my users that the blue font display for nodes on the new NPM12 Monitor is hard to see.  Does anyone know of a way to make that font black?

NPM 12.0 and VMware 6.5

We just upgraded our vCenter to 6.5 and now our Orion instance can't connect to it.  Everything worked fine prior to the upgrade (5.5 before).  In the Manage Nodes screen the credential validation under the VMware Polling Settings fails with the error, "Test Failed. Cannot login with selected vCenter or ESX credential."

- removed vCenter node and added back

- verified IP address was the same as before

- tried with full administrator account and it failed

- ICMP and Poll for VMware are only boxes checked

Any ideas here?

Thanks,

Jon

Orion Scalability Engine Evaluation expiration?

I figured I'd turn to Thwack for a quicker answer rather than try the phone or a ticket... can anyone help me understand what exactly is up with this? Will this mean that I won't be able to use the scalability installer for any other APEs?

Boost your server polling capacity with Stackable Poller license

Overview

This article provides information about FAQs asked by the customer based on the environments combined.

Environment

Orion Platform versions above NPM 10.6

Strongly recommended to have latest version of Orion

Detail

What a Stackable poller does?

All of us know SolarWinds SLX license you can montior up to 12000 Elements and beyond this you will need an Additional Polling Engine to monitor.

What is Stackable Poller idea

Stackable poller means license extension on polling  server  if your server hardware can handle it  , with the latest version of SolarWinds NPM, you can now install up to three unique polling engines on a single polling server, sharing a single IP address. Stackable polling engines enable you to effectively triple the polling capacity of a single server so you can get benifit of available server hardware within the existing installed enviornment

Further it will help you to monitor more Elements ( Nodes/Volumes/Interfaces/Services ) without having any dedecated servers to be confirmed and manage so its less overhead for the I.T staff to manage .

How can i check my Server current hardware meeting this requirments

For more informaiton MINIMUM Hardware Requirments see below.

SolarWinds Orion server hardware requirements

How many Stackable Poller license I can have on the Single Server?

Up to three total polling engines may be installed on a single server (i.e. one primary NPM
polling engine with one or two additional polling engines on Primary Server  or three additional polling engines on
the Additional polling server ).

Note: A stack requires only 1 IP address, regardless of the number of APEs

Can I install Stackable Poller on my existing Additional Polling Engine?

Yes 'Stackable Poller' is basically only extending the licensing capability on the Poller  you can have multiple Stackable poller on your existing Additional Poller It can be update by Smart Bundler  .

How can I update my  Poller for Stackable Poller?

On the  Poller it can be updated by Smart Bundler.

It means that by additional poller package downloadable from customer portal (not the Individual Downloads, but the Main Additional Poller Installer also called Smart Bundler).

How to install Stackable Poller on my Primary Polling Engine?

In this example I am assuming we are implementing Stackable Poller on the Main Poller (that has enough resources to tackle additional load)
As you are aware a single poller can tackle upto 12k elements
Also there is no special installer for Stackable Poller
You will need a license to be purchased as for Additional Polling Engine
You will go into your Customer Portal & download the Additional Poller Smart Bundler  (not the Individual Downloads, but the Main Additional Poller Installer also called Smart Bundler)
Basically when you will run Additional Poller Smart Bundler this installer will say on the main poller that everything is already installed and ask you if you want extend license.
Now simply key in the license of the Additional Poller in the wizard
It will never install anything on main poller it only just update the license
So the customer has got extra capability to fully utilize his server
Also after the license has been applied you can open the License Manager and you will see another entry in the Lincense Manager as following

On Primary Polling Engine it will take up to 2 MAX Additional Polling Engine license keys

On Additional Polling Engine it will looks like this

You will have the message "The machine has reached to license limit" after that therefor it will only be able to take up to 3 licenses.

So if I have have mutiple modules installed on the Primary Poller (do I have to install all the other modules as well , because Smart bundler will download say APE SAM , APE UDT , APE NPM)
so when I run the Smart Bundler on the Primary poller (it will not say that Primary Poller is already installed on this machine)

Yes, it will say on main that everything is installed and ask you if you want extend license
so it will never install anything on main, just update license

If I will install Stackable Poller on my primary server it will increase the capacity to 24K elements to tackle?

It will ask you on main to add license key for additional poller (means 24k elements). Once you run it again, you can add another AP license (means 36k elements) and if you run it third time,

it will say  This machine has reached its license limit .  The same functionality is for Additional Poller installation  And yes, Stackable poller means license extension on polling  server

Need poller for Dell m1000e enclosure.

$

0

I have several Dell m1000e enclosures that I want to monitor with NPM. I am currently using the universal device poller, and all i see is info from the CMC interface (pretty useless).

I wanted to monitor all of the hardware components in the enclosure (power supply, fans, etc.). Is there anyone out there that has created a custom poller for this?

I have the MIB that I downloaded from the CMC, but when I did a walk on it, I didn't really see the specific values I was looking for. I know the system can alert via SNMP for multiple different values (see attached) I am just not sure if this is a OID you can poll, or just a trap that is sent when a severity is reached.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

NPM 12 RC2 Manage Alerts Refresh Loop

$

0

Installed NPM 12 today and found I am only able to make one edit to any alert before the 'Manage Alert's > Alert Manager' display area goes into a refresh loop for about ninety seconds to three minutes and am unable to manage any of the alerts.  The 'Action Manager' tab does not exhibit this behavior.  Setting a different value on the 'Group By' dropdown seems to shorten the amount of time on the refreshes.  We've also found using the search field before making any edits seems to prevent the refreshes from occurring.

How I reproduced it:

1.) Click Settings>Manage Alerts

2.) Select the first alert I see and click the 'Edit Alert' button.

3.) When the Alert wizard finishes loading, click the 'Cancel' button.

4.) Sit back and watch the refreshes fly.

What we did to try and fix it:

  • Restarted all Solarwinds services and IIS
  • Physically restarted the server.
  • Run a database maintenance
  • Ran configuration wizard selecting only website
  • Ran configuration wizard selecting website and services

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Dynamic Custom Properties by subnet

$

I have created a custom property called Site and want to add my nodes to a list of 7 sites.   Is there a way to add a subnet as a whole so if a new node is added to a subnet its added to the site?   I've only been able to add the nodes individually.  I can query for 10.1.3. and get a list of 6 nodes .1 - .6 and select all six to add at once but I want .7 and so on to be added automatically when they are created.   Or at least just add the whole subnet now so I don't have to select each node.   Is there a way to do either?

Option of 'reset the alert automatically after x mins' not available

Hi All,

I have Orion platform verstion 2014.1.0 with NPM 11.0 in one of my instance.

In the Advanced alert manager for an alert, under reset condition I don't see an option of reset the alert automatically after x mins. Below screenshot for reference:

Is this because of the older version?

WPM Location Names Showing Up In Custom Charts, still.

$

0

For some weirdo reason, when we make a Custom Chart and display some Nodes' Average CPU Load, some of the node names in the chart's legend will have one of our 3 WPM Players' location names in front of them.  The data source for the chart is filtered to only show nodes that have a certain value assigned to a custom property we call "Application".  The WPM Players definitely do NOT have that value defined for them in that custom property.  Just to make sure I didn't make a mistake, I'll post the chart's settings below as well.  But what in the world is going on?

In between typing this post up, posting the screenshots in below, and submitting this post, I searched on Thwack some more and finally found this link.  It seems to be the same issue, but that post was from August, 2015 and there was no resolution other than saying it was a known bug.  Surely they've fixed the bug, right?  Right?!?  That's a long time for a bug like that to remain...  If it hasn't been fixed is there a workaround we can do to mitigate this issue until it's hopefully fixed one day?

Which Help Desk / Service Desk are you using?

When you installed NPM, did you add Nodes manually or did you run discovery?

My Orion Website & Server is very slow what should i check quickly ?

$

0

This article provides quick information about  your current environment and health check , Further it  will help you address the most common reasons of  performance issues on to your server without sending the diagnostics to SolarWinds support  .

Your check list

✔Server Hardware

✔Orion DB Size / settings / options

✔Check your Website pages configured / Customization

Lets collect System diagnostics as below.

Navigate to Start -> SolarWinds Orion -> Documentation and Support

Launch the gray icon for Orion Diagnostics.> Click "Start"

This program will generate a .zip file as output.

( Unzip in a folder ) Right Click >  Select Extract Here .

Server Hardware

Lets check your System Hardware first if this even near to the Solarwinds MINIM recommended.

Go to the SystemInformation folder > Open the SystemInfo.txt file

You will be able to find the System hardware specification  below is an example where system is only assigned with 2 Physical CPU Sockets /

below is an example where the system is only assigned two CPU PHYSICAL SOCKETS which is below Solarwinds MINIMUM recommendation .

You must have to have MINIMUM 4 PHYSICAL CPU SOCKETS here .

System Type:               x64-based PC

Processor(s):              2 Processor(s) Installed.

                           [01]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1600 Mhz

                           [02]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1400 Mhz

Total Physical Memory:     49.082 MB

Available Physical Memory: 39.408 MB

Virtual Memory: Max Size:  56.250 MB

Virtual Memory: Available: 45.376 MB

Virtual Memory: In Use:    10.874 MB

Now open the SysInfo.csv file and check the further current CPU load on the System and CPU GHz level .

Below in an example where the CPU load in around 70% on the current system due to two main reasons .

Parameter

Value

OSVersion

Windows Server 2012 R2 (Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0)

CPUInformation

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2420 0 @ 1.90GHz

CurrentCPUUssage

70 %

TotalPhysicalMemmory

49152 MB

FreePhysicalMemmory

39802 MB

FreeVirtualMemmory

45843 MB

FreeSpaceInPagingFiles

7109 MB

CurrentTimeZone

xxxx Standard Time (UTC+01:00:00)

Low Physical Sockets assigned

Low CPU power less then 3.0 GHz

Further check how much memory is assinged and available for the system and check the TaskManager which application is consuming high memory .

In above case the System Hardware is not even near to the recommended SolarWinds production deployment therefor the CPU load will remain high therefor System resources.

The following table lists minimum hardware requirements and recommendations for your SolarWinds Orion server.

Installing multiple SolarWindsOrion Platform products on the same computer may change the requirements.

Hardware requirements are listed by SolarWinds NPM license level.

These minimum requirements are for the Orion Platform. Products that run on the Orion Platform may have different requirements, such as different OS or memory requirements.

Consult your product-specific documentation for the exact requirements.
