Privileged users unable to scroll within MAP

$

Hello,

In our environment, when privileged accounts are used with Internet explorer to utilize SolarWinds, the privileged accounts are unable to scroll within the Global Network map. We're able to zoom in, but never scroll within the map. With our regular user accounts, we're able to utilize the map and scroll as normal.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

SW Agent Failed - Protocol https - Connection failed with error 0x65b

I started another discussion earlier that the solarwinds agent 1.6 would hang and not uninstall. As I was trouble shooting, I reinstalled the agent on the 2008 R2 windows domain controller server. How ever when it tries to connect I get a "" Protocol [https] - Connection failed with error [0x65b] Function failed during execution "" I also know that it is contacting the NPM server, if I put a wrong password in the Orion Agent setting, it does come back with a password error instead of the above error.

I cannot find a log or something that would point me in a better direction to troubleshoot this. I am not sure if this is why or has anything to do with why it will not uninstall.

Hi,

My web console session continues to time out despite setting the session time out to 500 minutes (times out in just a few minutes of non-use)

I have also disabled the session timeout against my user.

This is extremely frustrating, does anyone have any ideas?

Meraki Cloud Devices - not showing as "AP" devices

Has anyone else experinced issues getting Meraki units to display as "AP" devices / "wifi" interfaces?

We've got some MR32's being deployed, and i've tried both direct SNMP monitoring and monitoring of the cloud device.

Monitoring the cloud - following this guide (file:///C:/Users/leporaj/Downloads/ConfigurationGuide-Meraki-SolarwindsSNMP%20(2)%20(2).pdf) , i see the properties of AP's attached, but only under the "dashboard device".  So, my end goal of creating a heat map ... well i have no objects to move over to it.

Monitoring directly, the device will show up, and show 3 interfaces - wired0 / mon0 / mon1.

My end goal is working on the heat maps ... but Network Atlas is throwing this up since it's not seeing it as AP.  Any advice?

NPM 'niggles' and other random stuff I am encountering.

     Good afternoon.

So I have installed all apps on a new box, built a new, shiny SQL clustered environment to ensure that things stay up.  I am looking to get funding for failover with solarwinds too.

The thing is, I have the following problems:

- New NPM 12 is REALLY slow.  I mean almost like old man trying to write a birthday card slow.

   - I don't think it's the spec of the machine, or what the machine has on (in terms of applications and nodes) It has five solarwinds applications on:

     - NPM

     - NCM

     - IPAM

     - WPM

     - SAM

It is the following spec VM running in VMware 5.5, but an upgrade is on the way (these are gen 9 hp's) I checked with solarwinds and for our licensing, this would be perfectly fine spec.  Baring in mind, the SQL servers are exactly the same spec of machine.

  - 16gb ram

  - 4 cores (3ghz)

  - Windows server 21k12

  - These are attached to fast storage (it is on the same storage as the SQL databases)

I type in the IP address (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) and it literally just freezes.  it sits there and it's 'waiting' I have tried IE, firefox and chrome (I even wanted to get Opera out.) and it just sits there waiting for the bus.  The only address that does work is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/Orion/admin.  I have checked our older soalrwinds and have copied the exact same IIS settings to make sure it's not that (though we were using old software, hence the new build and not an upgrade).  I have ensured that all services and solarwinds services are running, done a reboot, rolled back a snapshot and re-installed and it is still doing the same results.

There are only three nodes that are added to this server (SQL and solarwinds itself)  Am I missing something inside IIS (I am not an expert of IIS.) that stops me from connecting to this via the ip address and not from an account itself?

What is the #1 networking problem you need to solve in the next 30 days?

Sometimes devices show up in Orion as "unknown".  Those devices need to be added to our SysObjectID database.  We know about lots of them, but we'd like to hear which items you need.

 We need:

SysObjectID (which you can find in Node Details) in System Manager.

I wanted to open a discussion and engage the community. I was wanting to gauge and see if this is possibly something that others could agree with or maybe contribute ideas that could be helpful not just for us but everyone else.

At least to me it seems like with SolarWinds you never have a full suit but rather one or the other. What I mean is either you have the best monitoring possible and lackluster features. Or you have great features and lackluster monitoring. From what I can remember it was version 10.4.2 that offered a great combination of both for it's time. And Instead of offering upgrades along the same lines. It seems at least to me that development sped up releases and that's when more problems where introduced.

We currently have just brought up a brand new deployment. It's in testing mode for a month so all kinks could be ironed out and everything works as expected. I must say I'm loving the new features on service back 1 and enhancements made. But since I believe version 10.7 the alerting engine hasn't really changed in drastic ways. Same goes with reporting. The only major change was when everything went online instead of having to login to the server to get things done. But then again these features have been improved but largely have stayed the same in terms of look and feel an ability. Point I'm getting to is that limitations that where there before are still there today. And it seems like SolarWinds has put all efforts behind monitoring and not the much into anything else.

But then I started to think. What is Monitoring without alerts or reports? And the answer is.. To us, Useless. One would argue that the current alerting engine gets the job done. And I can agree with that. It gets the job done. But then again when you are a highly respected software in the business, there are very high expectations of it. And then it leaves one wondering why did we invest so much monitoring into a monitoring solution when we need to spend more for monitoring, etc?

There are other things in question to for example. AIX (Unix) systems, why do we need to go through all the added steps of perl scripting and building SAM templates? Wouldn't it be better if AIX native to NPM monitoring? The key is to reduce steps to monitor, not increase them.

To me I firmly believe that if the suit was packaged in a way that it offered superior monitoring, with strong management features such as alert and reporting, it would make the software even more valuable then what it currently is. I know we all have different opinions, but for me I would much rather wait for an upgrade that's carefully thought out and built correctly then small upgrades that don't really provide much value to us.

I'll leave it up to you guys for thoughts, opinions, comments, anything you want to say.

Custom Views for Specific Users in a Group

Hello All,

We have an admin and a read only group setup in Orion using Windows authentication. Currently multiple site leads want to have access to Solarwinds for there specific sites. These users will all be in the read only group, is there a way to setup specific views for specific users all in the same group. Or would I need to create separate user accounts in Solarwinds and attached specific views for each user? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

NPM 10.4 Hardware Health

$

I have a question on what I am seeing and how to interpret the display I am seeing.  I have a 3 switch stack of Cisco 3750X's.  When I look at the Solarwinds Hardware Status, I get this:

But via the CLI, I see this:

OP12SW1#sho env pow all

SW  PID                 Serial#     Status           Sys Pwr  PoE Pwr  Watts

--  ------------------  ----------  ---------------  -------  -------  -----

1A  C3KX-PWR-1100WAC    LIT15381AQ1  OK              Good     Good     1100/0

1B  Not Present

2A  C3KX-PWR-350WAC     LIT15380TNZ  OK              Good     Good     350/0

2B  Not Present

3A  C3KX-PWR-350WAC     DTN1536L089  OK              Good     Good     350/0

3B  Not Present

Now I understand the 'B' power is the RPS.  No biggy there.  But why does the Solarwinds show SW1 as "Not Functioning" when it clearly is?  Is it because this one has a different PS in the device (and therefore a bug in NPM)?

Thanks,

Jim

Group Details View - Limitation with variable

$

Hello

We have created 70 Dynamic Groups and trying to leverage the "Group Details" view.

When you click on a Group, all the resources (TOP10 etc) presents based on the entire list of Nodes, Interfaces, Volumes as opposed for the group you click on.

I believe I need to apply a view limitation so only the Group select and its members show on the web resources.

Has anyone achieved this?

I have tried using the Group variables but no luck

http://www.solarwinds.com/netperfmon/solarwinds/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm#context=SolarWinds&file=orioncoreagadv…

Keep getting:

There was an error retrieving data from SolarWinds Information Service

Error: A query to the SolarWinds Information Service failed.

I am hoping to take the same principle to the MAPS where creating on MAP template and use a Group variable to populate the MAP.

Thanks

Ken

Any way to export or generate a copy of Solarwinds SQL DB minus the historical data?

Hi,

I am looking for some input regarding a server migration question for our primary poller.

Our current environment is as follows...

Primary Poller: W2008 physical machine with NPM 11.5.3, NCM 7.4.1, SAM 6.2.3 & VNQM 4.2.3 installed

Secondary Poller: W2012 VM with NPM 11.5.3, NCM 7.4.1, SAM 6.2.3 & VNQM 4.2.3 installed

Database Server: W2008 VM

New Primary Poller VM: W2012 VM

*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

What we are planning on doing is migrating our Primary Poller to a VM, the cluster on which the VM we are migrating to does not have our current primary poller address available on it, as a result we need to change the address of our primary poller.

Having to change the address of our primary poller necessitates a lot of changes across both monitored nodes and firewalls between our poller and monitored nodes.

With all this change, I would expect that when we have migrated our current primary poller to the new VM there will be some nodes that are unreachable from the new address, there's so many changes being made I wouldn't expect us to be able to monitor everything we are currently monitoring 100% when we attempt to cut over.

There are a few approaches we could consider to ensure there is not a prolonged period for which nodes are not being monitored...

1. Take a staged approach to the migration.

Install all the current modules we are running on our new VM on an eval licence, then run the config wizard on the VM to point the new eval instance of Solarwinds at our production database. The eval instance of Solarwinds will then have all the polling information it needs to know which addresses it needs to poll and by which method (some are SNMP, some ICMP etc). We could give that 45 minutes or so then we could have a look at our nodes with problems window  and record which nodes we are not able to poll then cut back over to our current primary poller address (10.31.1.1) with the production licence. We could then evaluate which nodes we're not able to poll and then make any necessary config or firewall rule changes. We could repeat this process until we have connectivity to all currently monitored nodes.

2. Create a bare bones database and point eval instance of Solarwinds at it

This approach involves creating a bare bones database to run side by side on our live database server. I would like to pre populate this database only with the necessary polling information for each node that is being currently polled by our live primary poller, what I mean here is if we could prepopulate the database with just enough information to tell the eval instance of Solarwinds what addresses to poll we could run both instances side by side and I could work away at eliminating connectivity problems whilst the live system remains untouched.

I had a look around the DB to see if there was a table we could export then import but can't seem to find anything I could export that will let me populate a new temp database with just the Orion config (customizations, IP's of nodes to poll etc). Is there a way to generate a temp database with everything excluding historical polling data to keep the size down? We would need to keep this database small so it doesn't consume too much space on our hard drive so I would set historical data retention to the bare minimum. At present our DB is 89G in size and we have 90G free on the disk that we could put temp DB on

3. Use SQL express and host the DB locally.

Install NPM on our new VM and let it create its SQL express database on the same server. This is a temporary measure to have the DB on the same server as the Orion installation. I know this is not a recommended approach for Solarwinds. What I plan to do is run this eval instance of Solarwinds alongside the production instance. I can then use the discovery tool on the eval instance and feed it every IP that I am currently monitoring with the production Solarwinds, this way I can establish whether the eval instance has connectivity to nodes being currently monitored by production Solarwinds, once I can confirm connectivity to every node from eval instance currently being monitored I can then stop the services on the production Solarwinds then run the config wizard on the eval version and point it at the production database, when that is up and running I can delete the temp SQL express. If there any problems I can always reverse the last step and bring back up the old production instance.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Meraki Cloud Devices - not showing as "AP" devices

Has anyone else experinced issues getting Meraki units to display as "AP" devices / "wifi" interfaces?

Bad trap packet received from Node with IP X.X.X.X. Error description : No more data.

As the title says, I am getting a bad trap packet alert every 3 hours. The node we are receiving the bad trap packet from is a Dell Kace 1000 management server. That server is not being monitored specifically by NPM. I have tried enabling SNMP on the NPM server with our correct strings which did not seem to help.

All of the previous responses and answers to this issue seem to stem from Error description: Unknown user or engine. So that does not apply to my current issue.

All Polling Engines match

When I change a device to point to a different Polling Engine I get the message "The polling engine you are trying to assign the selected nodes can have a different suite of installed modules. Some types of objects can be dropped from monitoring."

Is there a way to validate what suite is installed on the primary and each additional poller? I need the ability to freely move devices between pollers without losing information.

Network Atlas: ConnectNow not fully connecting

$

Hello,

I have a map created with nodes and most of the connections are able to be set via ConnectNow, but there are a few that do not connect via ConnectNow (L2 & 3). These connections pass traffic, but did not connect via ConnectNow and I manually added them.

I looked at the connections on the map, and those that have defined connections usually have an Interface Index identified at least on one side.

Do you need the Interface Index identified on at least one side in order for the connections to function on the map?

Thank you for your time.

Ken
