Network Atlas: ConnectNow not fully connecting

$
0
0

Hello,

I have a map created with nodes and most of the connections are able to be set via ConnectNow, but there are a few that do not connect via ConnectNow (L2 & 3). These connections pass traffic, but did not connect via ConnectNow and I manually added them.

I looked at the connections on the map, and those that have defined connections usually have an Interface Index identified at least on one side.

Do you need the Interface Index identified on at least one side in order for the connections to function on the map?

Thank you for your time.

Ken

Monitoring Palo Alto LSVPN tunnel utilization

Has anyone been able to monitor the LSVPN tunnel interface traffic without false positives for interface down?

Since updating to NPM 12.0.1, I can now see transmit and receive utilization over my tunnel.20 interface just fine.

However, I also get a large number of interface up / down alerts which seem to occur whenever one of my satellites is down.

Is there a way to ignore these up/down notifications and just get utilization?

Thank you!

Cisco ASA as a Default gateway?

There has been over 1 million of Cisco ASAs built and deployed around the world in a past years (good job Cisco!). As not supporting SNMP protocol properly, they often complicate our lives when configured to be Default gateways, not allowing products like SolarWinds User Device Tracker to monitor what's behind. Do you use your ASAs as a Default gateways too? If so, what percentage of your network they route?

Ending Support for SQL 2005- Thoughts?

With the end of Microsoft's extended support for SQL 2005 rapidly approaching (Microsoft Product Lifecycle Search) we are investigating the possibility of announcing a future end-of-support for SQL 2005 for the Orion platform. We know the percentage of customers running 2005 dwindles daily, but wanted to pose the question to the community- anyone out there running 2005 that would have trouble migrating to a (slightly) more modern SQL version?

To SaaS or not to SaaS, that is the question.

This article provides quick information about  your current environment and health check , Further it  will help you address the most common reasons of  performance issues on to your server without sending the diagnostics to SolarWinds support  .

In this article you can also Audit your own environment quickly if its been setup as recommended by the Solarwinds MINIMUM requirements or according to the settings eliminating bottlenecks creating performance issues within the set environment .

This article also help to save time to upload the diagnostics for Support where you have air gap between the server and you can check the basic health check on the actual server itself .

There are lots of other benefits to check the environment health within the internal due to security procedure not allowing uploading the diagnostics for Solarwinds support .

Your check list

✔Server Hardware

✔Total Elements (Nodes /Interfaces/ Volumes)  been polled per server

✔SQL Server / Orion DB Size / Settings / Options

✔Webpages Customization

Lets collect System diagnostics as below.

Navigate to Start -> SolarWinds Orion -> Documentation and Support

Launch the gray icon for Orion Diagnostics.> Click "Start"

This program will generate a .zip file as output.

( Unzip in a folder ) Right Click >  Select Extract Here .

Server Hardware

Lets check your System Hardware first if this even near to the Solarwinds MINIM recommended.

Go to the SystemInformation folder > Open the SystemInfo.txt file

You will be able to find the System hardware specification  below is an example where system is only assigned with 2 Physical CPU Sockets /

below is an example where the system is only assigned two CPU PHYSICAL SOCKETS which is below Solarwinds MINIMUM recommendation .

You must have to have MINIMUM 4 PHYSICAL CPU SOCKETS here .

System Type:               x64-based PC

Processor(s):              2 Processor(s) Installed.

                           [01]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1600 Mhz

                           [02]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1400 Mhz

                          Total Physical Memory:     49.082 MB

                          Available Physical Memory: 39.408 MB

                          Virtual Memory: Available: 45.376 MB

                          Virtual Memory: In Use:    10.874 MB

Now open the SysInfo.csv file and check the further current CPU load on the System and CPU GHz level .

Below in an example where the CPU load in around 70% on the current system due to two main reasons .

You should be able to see MINIMUM 4 Physical Processors  Sockets as below .

System Model:              VMware Virtual Platform

System Type:               x64-based PC

Processor(s):              4 Processor(s) Installed.

                           [01]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3493 Mhz

                           [02]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3493 Mhz

Further check how much memory is assinged and available for the system and check the TaskManager which application is consuming high memory .

In above case the System Hardware is not even near to the recommended SolarWinds production deployment therefor the CPU load will remain high therefor System resources.

The following table lists minimum hardware requirements and recommendations for your SolarWinds Orion server.

Installing multiple SolarWindsOrion Platform products on the same computer may change the requirements.

Hardware requirements are listed by SolarWinds NPM license level.

These minimum requirements are for the Orion Platform. Products that run on the Orion Platform may have different requirements, such as different OS or memory requirements.

Consult your product-specific documentation for the exact requirements.

Orion Asset Inventory

$

Hi,

I'm working on a project to script the creation of Nodes in Orion.  I have everything worked out with REST calls, except for adding the Asset Inventory.  I create the Asset Inventory poller with

$body =

@"

{
     "PollerType":"N.Asset.Inventory.Wmi.Generic",

     "NetObject":"N:$($NodeID)",

     "NetObjectType":"N",

     "NetObjectID":"$($NodeID)"

}

"@

Invoke-RestMethod -Credential $cred -Uri "https://$($orionComputerName):17778/SolarWinds/InformationService/v3/Json/Create/Orion.Pollers" -ContentType "Application/json" -Body $body -Method POST

That creates the Asset Inventory Poller and I can see it in SWQL the same way one would see it as if the Asset Inventory were added from the UI. However, I can't seem to get the node added to the AssetInventory_Polling Table, which seems like is the place that the node has to be for it have the Asset Inventory actually functional in the UI.

Am I missing something?  Has anyone had any experience with this?  I've done a lot of searching on the subject, but haven't come up with much.

Thanks everyone!

SolarWinds Agent 1.6 Hangs when uninstalling

I am having an issue with uninstalling a agent that is installed on a Domain Controller, sitting on a windows server 2008 R2, for what ever reason that I have not been able to figure out, the agent stopped communicating with NPM. I was also all of sudden having problems with the MKS console on this virtual machine in VMware 6.0, so I decided to uninstall and reinstall both the Solarwinds agent and the VM tools, The problem that I am having now is that the Solarwinds Agent will not uninstall, it gets about half way and then hangs, it does stop the service, and removes the service, in the end I have to hard stop the uninstall, and restart the server. When the server restarts its back including its service, again. If I try to uninstall it, it hangs. Is there another option to uninstalling the agent?

Nodes showing as Warning instead of Down

$

We've been working with one of our end customers to setup a WAN alert suppression for each of their locations. We have each of their edge routers at each of their site locations as the dependency and the other devices at each location as the group so that they will only receive one alert rather than hundreds when a site goes down. We were trying to run a test with this yesterday to make sure that everything was working as intended, however, when our customer took down the two WAN interfaces, their Orion server only showed that all of those devices at that site had 100% packet loss and were in a warning state instead of down. We had the WAN links disconnected for at least 30 minutes with no change in results. My understanding is that if the Orion server is not able to reach a device via ICMP, it's supposed to mark it as down. Our customer recently changed their Orion server to version 12 so I'm not sure if something changed from version 11 to 12. Let me know what your thoughts are and as always, your assistance is greatly appreciated.

After upgrading to NPM 12.01 i started getting error from Orion UDP application . I had a similar problem with version 11.5.3 but it got fixed by a hotfix :

Orion Universal Device Poller: Unspecified Error - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support

I already tried the manual database backup , restarting all the service and a full server reboot. The only thing that solves the problem is a full server reboot but this is a solution i can only aply on Sunday mornings.

Any ideea what service or process needs to be restarted in order to fix this without a server reboot?

SNMP trap receivers and polling engines

$

I'm using two polling engines, my primary NPM server and and additional poller. Not always knowing which poller will be polling a device, should I configure them to send traps to both, or just the primary?

Related questions I have...

Do traps received from a device (eg. link up/down) affect the polling of the device (polling rate, rediscovery, ..)?

If so, and assuming the device is being polled by the 'additional poller', will the trap have the same affect if it's received by the primary poller only?

Does configuring a device to send traps to both pollers cause any problems, ie duplication of traps in database?

thanks..

Orion NPM Database password

$

Hi guys,

Hypothetical.

Say someone created a database for Orion NPM and then didn't document the credentials and then when it came to install NCM and needs to know the database password he can't remember it.

Anyway, of finding out what that existing password is, is it stored in plaintext in a .cfg file anywhere?

If not and the password on the database password has been reset can it be changed in Orion so it can still connect or does NPM need to be re-installed?

This hypothetical by the way isn't me but before I got involved :p.
