Reports in CSV format?
Is there a simple way to get Report data into a CSV file? My boss like Excel and doesn't want a PDF...
Wireless Heat Maps - 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz connections
Hi guys wondering if anyone could shed some light on this.
We've finally upgraded to the latest version of Solarwinds (12.0.1) and are now able to use the heat map feature and so far it seems like it's going to be a lot of help. I'm just wondering if anyone could shed some light on how it handles the different frequencies. We have Cisco 2802i APs which support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections. The question is; how does the heat map interpret this? or doesn't it?
I'm guessing what I am seeing is the 2.4GHz connection but it would be nice to know exactly what I am seeing and if the 5GHz feature has been or is going to be implemented.
Thanks!
Execute external program via Alert?
I was hoping this was fixed in version 9 but I still can't seem to make the Execute External program to work via alerts.
What I am trying to accomplish is to play a sound on a remote system when the alert is tripped. I can get the following command to work from the command line:
f:\psexec -d \\1xx.1xx.1xx.1xx -i c:\progra~1\window~2\mplayer2.exe /play /close c:\tada.wav
and it plays a sound on the remote system.
I then put the exact same string in the Execute External program in the advanced alert and it sends out the email but doesn't kick off the sound.
So I then put the contents into a batch file and pointed the alert to run the batch file. Same thing, no sound.
The alert test "says" it worked ok but didn't. I then thought it might be related to the fact that I was "testing" it so I simulated a device outage - email but no sound.
So in short - has anyone got the execute external program to work? Especially playing a sound on a remote workstation?
How to create a report displaying the Last Time Data was Transmitted or Received on a Switch Port
First off, there's a great thread with XML language that creates a new Report for this that can be imported into your SW here: How to find ports which have not been used for a long time ?
If that doesn't get you exactly what you want, older versions of NCM had this information as part of their Inventory solution. It's been removed at version 7.4 and reportedly is moving to UDT.
Check this search out for other threads containing "Last & Transmitted": https://thwack.solarwinds.com/search.jspa?q=last+transmitted
The process below is what I built for my team's use, since the above XML report provided information for too many kinds of ports and systems. The method I use allows you to focus on a specific switch, and it eliminates reporting on some ports that I know will always be out of scope for discovering patched copper ports for reuse (like fiber uplink ports and port-channels or local Fa0 ports).
Start off in Settings, Admin > Alerts & Reports, Create New Report
Click the small blue "Edit" just to the right of Datasource 1 and make it look like this:
Adjust the items above to match your specific needs and then click Add to Layout.
What the filtered options mean:
- As you can see from the first entry (Caption contains "Insert Switch Name") this particular report will focus solely on a specific switch. You don't have to include this if you don't want, and you could change it to identify a switch by whatever method you prefer--or drop it entirely.
- Orion NPM may discover Cisco interfaces that are "Controlled" and "Uncontrolled" for security options (depending on IOS release and hardware platform); since these interfaces are duplicates to the physical interfaces, I don't want them included in the report, so I had it filter any interface with "ontrol" in its name.
- I'm not interested in Port-channels, therefore that's filtered out.
- I don't want any port whose status is "Up".
- It must be a Physical Interface, not a virtual or logical one.
- Don't report on Ten Gig interfaces ("Interface Name does not start with Te")
- Don't report on interfaces ending in 49-52--those are uplink fiber links on my switches, and I'm not looking for information about those in this report. I only want to know about copper ports that can be unpatched & reused.
- Don't report on the Fa0 port if one is present
Click Edit Table
Adjust these items per your specific needs and click Submit
I put a note it to remind my Team to change the switch name inside the report:
Click Next
Put helpful information in the Report Description, Click Next.
Schedule if it needed:
Click Next
Review the setup and make any changes required:
Click Submit.
Now select the report, edit it to report on the specific switch, save it and run it. You'll get a report that sorts from the ports longest down to those most recently down, looking like this:
I export this to .PDF and send it to my Network Technicians for unpatching of ports on switches they're concerned with.
Enjoy!
SQL for last 30 days - date calculation
I am creating a bespoke report based on the built-in Orion "last 30 days" report. In Report Writer the SQL is something like this:
SELECT .....
FROM .....
WHERE
( DateTime BETWEEN 87893 AND 87922 )
As the report is a 'rolling' 30 days, how does report writer calculate the 5-digit values above? When I look at the SQL in the writer app they have already been worked out...
Thanks ,

VPN Tunnel Monitoring
I am trying to monitor VPN tunnels up/down status. Can anyone tell me the best way to do this with the Solarwinds Product? We are trying to avoid just pinging a server on the far side of the VPN tunnel as it is a third party device and we do not particularly care if their server is up and running, only that the tunnel is up. I already have the Universal Pollers for the Cisco ASA that tells us the number of active tunnels, current connections, and the number of sessions.
If using the cikeGlobalActiveTunnels OID is a good way to monitor active VPN's, how can I configure alerting if a critical VPN is no longer active? The issue here is that not all of the VPN sessions are critical nor are they up all the time, so how can I differentiate the critical VPNs that should be up 24/7 from the ones that are only used periodically throughout the day?
I am aware of using the IP SLA Monitor option to ping an IP on the other end as well. I am thinking that this may be my best bet, but I wanted to pose this question to the community just to be sure.
Thanks.
Netpath error "No data found"
We have been using Netpath since it came out, and it has worked very well for us until recently. Two weeks ago, we had our normal Windows patching weekend. A couple of days later, I discoverd that all of our Netpath probes were no longer displaying in NPM. All of them have the following error:
No Data Found
Netpath has no data about this time interval. If this happens often, consider increasing the probing interval by 5 or 10 minutes.
We have almost 20 Netpath servers that stopped working. I have reinstalled the agent on one of our Netpath servers. I also rebooted our main poller and it started to display Netpath data, but it stopped eventually. Today I rebooted it and the amount of time displayed was even shorter before all of them stopped showing data in NPM.
I do have a case open on this, but that almost two weeks ago so I'm looking to see if anyone else has any recommendations.
Polling SNMP from 2 Separate Orion Instances
We are contemplating turning on a secondary environment which is a exact copy of our primary instance. What would be some of the concerns in regards to polling our network devices and such twice at the standard polling intervals.
Also, what are some ideas to keep the two separate databases in sync with one another a side from the manual effort of updating 1 after the other?
APE Servers going in Hung State - Issue not solved
Hi ,
I am posting this issue when nothing worked out, means everything - Support case, Windows troubleshoot, Logs capturing etc. etc.
Environment -
1. NPM, SAM, SRM on Primary Poller. Configuration - 160 GB RAM and 16 Core CPU. OS - 2008 R2 SP1.
2. SQL DB - On Separate Server - 256 GB RAM and 16 COre CPU. OS - 2008 R2 SP1.
3. Three more Additional Polling Engines for NPM and SAM. SRM is also there but we are not using SRM so far. Configuration for each APE : 40 GB RAM, 16 Core CPU. OS - 2012 Standard.
Issue -
APE server is going in Hung state every 3-4 days that results in Solarwinds to stop monitor, Bulk of false email alert of past events and DCOM fail events. That happens in Evening time only of EST time i.e. arround 4-6 PM EST.
Initially we had only one APE and when we distributed the load of Primary poller it worked fine for one week but after that started going Hung state, nothing could be done except reboot and monitoring started worked fine.
After having a case with Solarwinds Support Team, at last they suggested to rebuild another APE machine. We did builted another APE machine with same configuration as emntoned above for APE's and moved all the nodes form that APE to 2nd APE. Now issue started with new APE.
We had multiple cases where Solarwinds had said that this is related to System issue not with Solarwinds Product.
Lot of Subscription errors - but they have stopped after upgrading Solarwinds to 2017 SP2. Polling rate is also normal.
I had another APE (Same configuration , and it is on same host and same LAN) assign to another Solarwinds instance and that has NPM, NTA and IPAM only and APE is running fine. No hanging issue so far after bulting.
If that issue is with system host or configuration then it should happen with other APE on another Solarwinds because all are builted at same time with same configurations.
Steps that we have done so far.
1. Registry modification for TCP/Port Excaution is done.
2. Exclude Solarwinds Folders from Antivirus Scanning.
3. Re-building APE's.
4. Increased Resources.
5. Disabled all Down or Unknown AppInsight for SQL and IIS.
6. Un-Managed all down nodes and those nodes which are not responding to WMI or SNMP.
7. Upgraded Solarwinds platform to latest version i.e. Orion 2017 SP2 with NPM 12.1, SRM 6.4 and SAM 6.4

Windows team has verified everything and nothing could be find, we tried building new server but same issue over there. So finally Solarwinds has said no issue at application level and Widnows team has said no issue at Server level. We are now stuck in between, We don't know what is causing Solarwinds APE servers to go in hung state in a same pattern i.e. after every 3-4 days in evening time i.e. 4 -6 PM EST.
Please help us to find out the root cause.
TEST FAILED. No DNS Entries exist for Host
Currently experiencing an issue that I am unable to understand let alone fix.
Scenario:
4 Solarwinds Administrators in a corporate environment all have been issued laptops - all have the same network permissions, all have equal Solarwinds permissions. Up until recent all 4 have been able to add nodes to Solarwinds.
PROBLEM:
3 of the solarwinds admins are able to successfully test and add a windows server to a specific additional polling engine. 1 of the Solarwinds admins (we will call him Fred) is getting a failed error message when trying to add the same device to the same specific additional polling engine. Up until a few days ago Fred was able to test and add the same node successfully from his laptop. Fred also logged into a VDI session and received the same failed error message which was "Test Failed. No DNS Entry exists for host <------insert additional polling engine here. Fred then logged into one of the other Solarwinds admins laptops and was able to succssfully add the same node to the same poller. What would make this happen?
Question:
What would cause this to happen?
Confused about inconsistent SQL Filters
I've recently been working on some dashboards, and some of the easy requests turn out to be much harder than I thought.
For example, customer wants a list of all volumes listed by server. I tried the Top Volumes and while that gives the volumes, it doesn't sort things well. A server can be listed multiple times because the Resource wants to sort by the space used per volume. I use a filter like this:
Nodes.Caption like 'ServerName%' and Volumes.Caption not Like '%C:\*%' and Volumes.Caption not Like '%memory%'
Then I try the "All Volumes" Resource, figure this is perfect. Except I cannot get the SQL Filter to work. Many of the examples fail. Trying to filter on the Nodes.Caption seems to be the issue.
So does anyone have an idea of what would work? And why is the syntax different?
Cisco ASA as a Default gateway?
There has been over 1 million of Cisco ASAs built and deployed around the world in a past years (good job Cisco!). As not supporting SNMP protocol properly, they often complicate our lives when configured to be Default gateways, not allowing products like SolarWinds User Device Tracker to monitor what's behind. Do you use your ASAs as a Default gateways too? If so, what percentage of your network they route?
How does encrypted traffic, impact the effectiveness of your Advanced Traffic Analysis product (e.g. DPI-based solution)?
If you run an Advanced Traffic Analysis product, we are interested to hear about how impacted it is by encrypted traffic.
Example of these products/technologies: NBAR, Flexible Netflow, nProbe, Riverbed Cascade Opnet/Pilot, WildPackets, Fluke Optiview, Paessler, WireShark, Compuware...

I have not yet either, just wondering if anyone had a good or bad experience with it before I try.
Do you use the Network Sonar Discovery?
When adding new nodes to NPM, do you use Network Sonar or you add your nodes directly?
