Show us a NOC view and (don't ) get 500 thwack points (we still want to see, points no longer awarded)

UPDATE: we're no longer awarding points for this, but it's become a really popular post.  Please continue to share how you create NOC views, pictures of them, etc with each other as there has been clear value to users in seeing what other users do, but UX can no longer award points for this.

Adding Live Weather to the "Worldwide Map" Resource

 

Summary: This will allow you to add live weather to the worldwide map based on the OpenWeatherMap project (free).

Limitations: The map must be on a page where your can insert HTML/JavaScript. This will probably break during future releases.

Notes: If you want to change the height of your map you must do it within the HTML resource.

Step 1: Get the id of your map element, to do this go to a page where you've inserted the map (don't go to the map page itself). Once there view the source of the page (Ctrl + U in most browsers) and search for the map element (Ctrl + F), search for 'id="worldmap' (without the single quotes but with the double quote). Make note of your map ID, in this case 753.

Step 2: Add a HTML resource to the page with the map on it that you would like to modify. To do this go to "Customize Page" >>> "Add Resource To Column X" >>> "Custom HTML".

Step 3: Paste the contents of the attached file into the Custom HTML resource you just added to the page. Make sure you update the file with your map ID you found in step 1 and change others settings you would like to.

Network Sonar Discovery Questions

We are looking at using Network Sonar Discovery and I set this up on two of our domains - I am using OU in Active Directory for discovery - and I have a few questions.

 

1. So saw we add a new drive to a server that was not there before.  If we have a network sonar job configured to automatically run will this see the new drive that was added and automatically add it to the node so it comes up in monitoring?

2. Has anyone run into any issues with network sonar and automatically adding nodes?

3. Any gotchas I need to look out for?  

 

I think that's it for now I am sure I will have more once I do more digging into this.

Confused about inconsistent SQL Filters

I've recently been working on some dashboards, and some of the easy requests turn out to be much harder than I thought.

 

For example, customer wants a list of all volumes listed by server. I tried the Top Volumes and while that gives the volumes, it doesn't sort things well. A server can be listed multiple times because the Resource wants to sort by the space used per volume. I use a filter like this:

 

Nodes.Caption like 'ServerName%' and Volumes.Caption not Like '%C:\*%' and Volumes.Caption not Like '%memory%'

 

Then I try the "All Volumes" Resource, figure this is perfect. Except I cannot get the SQL Filter to work. Many of the examples fail. Trying to filter on the Nodes.Caption seems to be the issue.

 

So does anyone have an idea of what would work? And why is the syntax different?

i need to migrate my application and Database from old servers to new server.

i need to confirm is it possible with out losing the current dashboard,alerts  and Reports configuration.

if yes then how is it possible.my current deployment details is given below.

How to disable the Notification Bell icon

Hi Fellow Thwakers!! We are using solarwinds web console for multiple admin and non-admin users and customers. The bell icon is good for admin users but nothing useful in it for non-admin users.

Is there any way we can turn it off for those non-admin users and external customers?

Command output result has to be e-mailed like an alert

Hi,

We have a requirement from customer something like

 

In cases, instead of going with an SNMP monitoring or a log converted to an alert which involves little research research and testing, so we would like to see a command output result and the output of that command has to be e-mailed to like an alert.

 

For instance:

Whoops! Upgrade failure midway through install!

Hello All!  In the middle of an upgrade my VDI terminal decided to force reboot,  thus kicking out my RDP session to the SolarWinds server halfway through the install.  Once I was able to reconnect and rerun the installer I receive a message inside the SolarWinds Setup Wizard  "Ooops...we detected a problem...."      The installer had apparently been able to upgrade Orion Core to 2017.3 but had not upgraded the Modules, NPM, NCM, IPAM.  Now my modules are incompatible with the platform.  I failed to snapshot the VM the server is on and the Database VM has multiple databases so I'd like to avoid a previous snapshot of it.  I opened a support ticket but now I'm unable to review my open cases and I'm currently in queue with Technical Support.  Anyone have this problem and able to resolve?

Alerting on Volume Thresholds

Back in April of 2015, NPM 11.5 was released and with it came a brand new Web-based Alert Engine in the Orion Platform. At the time, and ever since, one of the most valuable capabilities of this new engine was the ability to dynamically alert on multiple objects based on their own individually assigned thresholds. Setting individual thresholds for things like CPU Utilization, Percent Memory Utilization, Packet Loss, Response Time, Interface Errors, and Interface Utilization was a game changer to a lot of alerting schemas that allowed us to reduce our custom property footprint, as well as the complexity of the alert definitions. However, a glaring "omission" was that the thresholds made available for Volumes were not presented to the alerting engine (or so we thought). This was a bit mind-boggling, and talking to other MVPs, seasoned SW Admins, and SW employees over the years, I had ever heard differently, so the assumption was cemented as a "missing item that requires a work-around". (On a side note, I am 42% sure that jbiggley was behind a very well orchestrated and elaborate trolling to keep me in the dark on this capability, but I digress...) But today, I'd like to present the solution that was hiding in the background this entire time, to save future admins the discomfort of maintaining "Disk_Crit" custom properties.

 

 

Background: Node and Interface metric thresholds are added to the alerting engine in a very intuitive way:

 

 

However, volume thresholds are obviously not:

 

 

The key was to take a step back and look at the alerting object options, there you shall find your salvation in the form of a "Volume Capacity Forecasting" object (as opposed to the intuitive "Volume" object type):

 

 

Which then presents those valuable thresholds!

 

 

From there, you need to setup a "Double Value Comparison" in the trigger:

 

 

And then create a comparison between the current and threshold values, respectively:

 

 

Which will then trigger on Volumes where their current percent utilization exceed the threshold you have defined on that specific volume:

 

 

 

For reference: thresholds are edited per object by editing the object's properties, and looking at the bottom of the page: (Pro Tip: you can edit multiple objects at once from the "Manage Nodes/Entities" page)

 

 

 

Verified via SQL search on the "VolumesForecastCapacity" view in the database:

 

 

SELECT TOP 100 * FROM VolumesForecastCapacity

Orion server - Communicating error - SOAP 17777

Hi,

 

I have the Orion Network Monitor, but when I'm trying to log in I'm getting below message:

 

There was no endpoint listening at net.tcp://xxxxxxxxx:17777/orion/core/businesslayer that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details.


I did the procedure explained in the screen, but it not solve too:

Help me fix this

  1. Confirm that the SolarWinds Information Service is running.
    • On your local SolarWinds server, click Start > Administrative Tools > Services.
    • Right-click SolarWinds Information Service V3, and then click Start.
  2. Confirm that the SolarWinds Orion Module Engine service is running.
    • On your local SolarWinds server, click Start > Administrative Tools > Services.
    • Right-click SolarWinds Orion Module Engine, and then click Start.
  3. Examine the specific details of the error for environmental hints to help resolve your issue.
  4. Refresh the web console browser.
  5. If still unresolved, click the troubleshooting help links below.
  6. After completing any changes, repeat the same task that generated this error.

 

I already added the entry in the Hosts file, but it also not solve the problem. I saw in some threads that can be a problem in the log files, that take the disk full, but it is not my case, the server has 185Gb free.

 

So, I would like to know what I need to know for solve this problem.

Does your organization use Mobile Device Management or MDM?

With the explosion of smart mobile devices, both tablets and phones and end users wanting to connect them for email, remote access (VPN), wireless etc. How are you handling this?  Does your organization even see this as a problem?  What level of control are you looking for?  Do you care if they have apps like DropBox are installed on them and uploading corporate files without your knowledge?

 

When I talk about Mobile Device Management I mean specifically things like:

  • Remotely manage and setup end users mobile devices (i.e. Google Android or Apple iOS) with the settings for service such as email access, wireless, VPN etc.
  • Enforce corporate security standards and best practices such as ensuring a pass-code is set or disabling certain feature or functions on the device like the camera
  • Ability to remotely wipe a device if lost or stolen
  • Report on types of devices, the hardware and software installed on them in your environment
  • Track users or stolen devices via GPS

Filter Active Alerts on Dashboard

Not sure if this is possible, but right now I have Node Alarms on the summary dashboard with Filter Nodes (SQL), filled in to only show the nodes I want. Works great, Dashboard is extremely useful and I'm watching it most of the day.

 

Soon we are going to a fully redundant network. In theory, Node Alarms won't exist because nothing will go down. BGP Neighbors will be lost and links will go down, but the Node will always be pingable.

 

We have an alert setup for "Alert me when a neighbor goes down" which works, but shows up on the All Active Alerts screen (we also have email alerts setup for "neighbor down"). Alerts can be searched, acknowledged etc on this page.

 

If I add "Active Alerts" to the dashboard, it works, but I'm unable to filter or search. Edit only allows changing the title and subtitle.

 

How can I only see the Active Alerts that I want to see instead of all alerts on the customized dashboard?

 

I understand I can keep a tab open for active alerts, but would really like to have a one-stop awesome, useful dashboard.
