Hotfix 3 issue

So I have a case open but haven't got a response yet on it  -

So I went to do the hotfix 3 install as the instability issues are becoming an issue with some members of my teams -

Ran the hotfix and then the configuration wizard and got almost done and tripped an error message -

so clicked finished and then started up the services - all came back up no issues but the web site no longer exists in the specified path -

Figured i would then go follow the uninstall directions in the notes but the hotfix is not listed in add/remove - I do see updated things from this morning but wasn't sure if I should remove them and then rerun the config wizard .. do not want to make things worse then they are at this moment

Thoughts ,

Cisco Catalyst 9300

Hi all,

I am starting to use Cisco Catalyst 9300 switches in our network, but I can see that my Solarwinds only sees them as:

Machine TypeCisco

Solarwinds don´t detect them as a C9300 model like it does with a C2960 etc.

Anybody knows how to fix this or will this be updated in a later version of NPM??

NPM 12.3 has shipped and we're hard at work building the next release.  Here's what we're working on, in no particularly order.

  • Cisco ACI Monitoring
  • Remote Collector - New, agent based collector for distributed environments and hybrid deployments
  • Next Generation Orion Mapping - First version delivered in NPM 12.3 via Orion Platform 2018.2.  Working on the next version.
  • Centralized Upgrades
  • Website & Database Performance Improvements
  • Windows Device Guard Support
  • SAML Authentication Support
  • Replace syslog/trap with the functionality from our new Log Manager product

NPM and Agent

I have NPM in my environment and not SAM.  We use our Orion Environment for Network Infrastructure Management.
I do understand that with the agent that the NetPath feature becomes available.

My problem is that I loss any interface monitoring on a device where the agent is used.

So here are my questions -

  1. Have I miss configured the Agent in that it is not providing interface information?
  2. Within an NPM environment what is gained by using the Agent?

Thank You for your time and help

Tell Us Your Unknown Devices v2.0

$

Those that have been part of the Thwack Community a while may be familiar with the long running Tell us your "Unknown" devices! thread which had been active since 2007. That thread had become too unwieldy, and most of the user submissions had been implemented many years ago. I recently reviewed each and every posting in that thread, verified what had been implemented in-product, and which ones had not so they could be included in a forthcoming release. With that done, it was time to lock that thread for good and start anew. This time, providing a bit more guidance along the way to ensure everyone is successful in providing the necessary information required to properly identify these devices.

What is an 'Unknown' Device anyway?

Orion does its best to automatically identify and classify nodes as they're added to Orion. There are however, new device types and models released all the time. It's entirely possible you might be managing a device right now that Orion is unable to properly identify. You can find these easily by going to [Settings - Manage Nodes], changing the 'Group by:' option to 'Machine Type' and clicking on the 'Unknown' category. It's also helpful to add the 'Polling Method' column to the layout, as this thread pertains exclusively to SNMP managed nodes.

Any SNMP managed nodes listed under the 'Unknown' Machine Type category are prime candidates for submission to this thread. All that's required is that you provide the devices SNMP System Object Identifier (SysObjectID), as well as the Make & Model of the device associated with that SysObjectID. This post is an excellent example of the perfect submission.

What Exactly is a SysObjectID?

I have yet to find a clearer definition for what the SysObjectID (System Object Identifier) is then the following excerpt which can typically be found written in virtually every vendor's MIB file verbatim.

Object Name: sysObjectID
Object ID: 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2.0
Object Syntax: OBJECT IDENTIFIER
Object Access: read-only
Object Status: mandatory
Object Description: The vendor's authoritative identification of the  network management subsystem contained in the  entity. This value is allocated within the SMI  enterprises subtree (1.3.6.1.4.1) and provides an  easy and unambiguous means for determining `what  kind of box' is being managed. For example, if  vendor `Flintstones, Inc.' was assigned the  subtree 1.3.6.1.4.1.4242, it could assign the  identifier 1.3.6.1.4.1.4242.1.1 to its `Fred  Router'.

Essentially, it's a string of numbers in dotted notation that is (hopefully) unique to at least the manufacturer, and in most cases, to the specific make and model of the device being monitored. It's how we identify for example, that the device vendor is 'Cisco' and the model is a 'Nexus C7018'. All System Object ID's begin with '1.3.6.1.4.1' followed by a number which uniquely identifies the manufacturer. The numbers which then follow typically identify the specific model of the device.

Where Can I Locate the SysObjectID?

If the device is already managed as a Node in Orion then you can locate the SysObjectID in the 'Node Details' resource as shown below, when viewing the node in the Orion web interface.

Node DetailsNET-SNMP

Alternatively, you can use NET-SNMP to query the following SNMP OID to return the unique SysObjectID.

1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2.0

Below is an example of the 'snmpget' command line arguments which will return you the SysObjectID for the device.

 snmpget -v2c -On -c public 10.199.5.103 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2.0

The example above is executed against a device with the IP address of '10.199.5.103' using SNMPv2c, with the community string 'public'. Below is a screenshot of the resulting output from that command. The string of numbers and periods highlighted in yellow below is this device's unique SysObjectID.

My Device Incorrectly Appears Listed as 'NET-SNMP'

Linux hosts, virtual appliances, and even some network equipment built on Linux, FreeBSD, etc. are often identified as 'NET-SNMP'. This is because the SNMP Daemon running on those hosts is, you guessed it, NET-SNMP. Unfortunately, these vendors for some reason, have chosen not to implement their own unique SysObjectID, and instead kept the default SysObjectID '1.3.6.1.4.1.8072.3.2.10' which is designated for NET-SNMP. If you have a device such as this, fret not. There are a few options available to you if you'd like these devices to be properly identified by their appropriate vendor's make & model within Orion.

Install The Orion Linux Agent

The easiest solution would be to install the Orion Linux Agent on the device which is reporting itself to be 'NET-SNMP'. The Linux Agent does not rely upon SNMP to identify the machine type or vendor. Instead, the Agent will report the Vendor as 'Linux' and the 'Machine Type' as the Linux distribution running on the device as depicted in the screenshots below.

Red HatCitrix XenServer

Modify NET-SNMP Configuration

Another approach is to customize NET-SNMP and Orion to properly reflect the Vendor and Machine Type. Simply following the steps outlined by adatole's post entitled No More Net-SNMP Nodes. This method uses a script osname.sh which is executed when a particular OID is is queried. Next, you would create a custom Device Poller to query that newly created OID and populate the Machine Type value in Orion for that device.

If you find it more fun to follow along, you can watch adatole walk you through the entire process in the following video.

Can't I Just Upload My Vendor's MIB File Here And You figure it Out?

While it would be nice if that's how it worked, unfortunately many (or most) vendors don't include this information within their MIB files. MIB files include a listing of all possible OIDs which could be polled across a wide variety of different devices (typically an entire product family), but it doesn't include the values which are returned by the devices (Enums notwithstanding). For that reason we need users, such as yourself, to post the SysObjectID's in this thread, along with the device vendor and model information so it can be included in our database.

If you'd still like your device's MIB file included in the Orion MIB database, for use with Network Performance Monitor's Universal Device Poller, or the Orion Platform's SNMP Trap Receiver, simply follow the steps outlined in KB article at the link below.  The latest version of the MIB database, containing your submissions, can always be downloaded from within the Customer Portal.

How to Discover & Report on Resources NOT PRESENT in SolarWinds Already?

$

Hi Guys,

Simple task, but I can't figure out simple answer. I need to run a discovery and pick only those resources (particularly interfaces) that haven't been added to SolarWinds already - basically report on everything what's missing. Is there an easy way to achieve this task? ... I am also ok with complex solution, as long as I get the job done. The ideal output would be some form of report, that will group all missing resources by node

Thanks for your help

NPM 12.3 not polling multiple VRFs on Nexus 7000?

$

0

Ok, been struggling with this for awhile.   Was hoping this new version would help out with it with the Nexus 7K support, but as far as I can tell it has not.

The issue is getting multiple VRF routing tables to poll on the Nexus 7K via SNMP.     The multiple VDC support is nice, and so is the vPC stuff, but our site doesn't use either of those.  But we do use multiple VRF's on our box and I'm having a heck of a time trying to get them to poll.

The odd thing is, I actually got it to work in our testbed by mapping a routing instance to a context instead of a specific VRF and polling that.  The routing instance in question was a BGP routing instance that had all my VRF's in it.  But, when I tried it in production it didn't work.  Further details from about 7 months ago can be found here:

Multi-VRF support, Nexus 7K, and arguing with TAC! :-)

I argued with Cisco TAC on this for some time, but got nowhere.   Everything TAC tells me and everything their documentation tells me says that it can't be done with the current way Solarwinds works.

Cisco Nexus 7000 Series NX-OS System Management Configuration Guide, Release 5.x - Configuring SNMP [Cisco Nexus 7000 S…

From what Cisco says you have to map a VRF to a context and associate that with a community.   ie:

snmp-server context BlueContext vrf blue

snmp-server context SilverContext vrf silver

Then, set up multiple communities

snmp-server community BlueCommunity group network-operator

snmp-server community SilverCommunity group network-operator

Then, map the community to the context

snmp-server mib community-map BlueCommunity context BlueContext

snmp-server mib community-map SilverCommunity context SilverContext

The problem with this is, you then have to poll using each community, or at the least each context.   If you try and map multiple contexts onto a single community it spits an error.

However, Solarwinds only has the ability to have one community and one context per node.  So unless you add them as multiple nodes, which would entail setting up multiple polling addresses since Solarwinds won't let you set up two nodes with the same IP, then it just doesn't work as far as I can tell..

To me this seems like a HUGE oversight!!

Am I missing something, can you consistently poll multiple VRF's on a Nexus 7K somehow?   Preferably so its a single device.   If so, detailed instructions would be nice.

What should Network Topology Mapper next release focus on ?

Are you comfortable with deploying virtual appliances?

We're discussing ways to deploy new products that may interact with your NPM (and other SolarWinds) deployments and one of our options is a virtual appliance.

Custom Poller of SNMP MIB and Alert on OID Value

$

I have setup a custom poller that pulls from the MIB CISCO-CDP-MIB:cdpChacheDeviceId.

Specifically OID: 1.3.6.1.4.9.9.23.1.2.1.1.6

I'm doing to alert on unauthorized devices that plug into the network.

I've added the custom poller to the Node Details, Networks Tab, and it is showing all the devices attached with no issues.

I'm however having problems with the alerts.

I've created and alert with the following information

I want to alert on:

Custom Table Poller Current Status

All objects in my environment

Trigger alert when:

All child conditions must be satisfied  (AND)

Custom Node Poller Unique Name Is equal to cdpCacheDevceId

and

Custom Table Poller Current Status            Current Value        does not start with          SEP

and

Custom Table Poller Current Status            Current Value        does not contain             NRouter

and

Custom Table Poller Current Status            Current Value        does not contain             NSwitch

When entering the values I see lots of SEP##### (cisco Phones) so it looks like it pull from the correct column in the table.

On the summery screen above submit I see This alert would be immediately trigger on 1 object(s) in the alert scope. When I click on Show List it shows unknown.

Unknown is the value in Display Name Field on the Select Field/Event screen, so not sure if that is where it is pulling that name from. The table pulls two fields from the OID which correlate to Current Value: and Row ID:

The real issue is the alert never actually triggers.

Hi Team,

I have to rebuild an APE. The platform version is 2017.3 HF3

While reinstalling the APE on a new box, we are getting the error: Algorithm has stuck! Unable to install any product on setup.

Is there any other way to install or I have to choose the legacy version?

Alerts and Events

Fairly new to Solarwinds and trying to get my head around alerts and events. Understand the idea of alerts and how to set them up etc....But what are the events used for. Does an event get triggered by something other than alert, or do you need an alert to raise an event ( and why would you bother ). When would you use events over alerts. All the doco seems to talk about setting alerts and events up but not why one of the other.

Missing charts on VMware

I noticed that I'm not getting some charts from VM. I'm getting "Data is not available"-boxes only. I can see that data with SNMP from other servers, but not from vmware.

Top conversations, server details (sppstack environment for example) shows ok, but top CPU's, memory consumption, and network traffic are missing. What could cause that? I've checked polling times (smaller than sample interval) and everything is ok.

I'm not familiar with VMware generally, so I'm not sure is it even possible to get that information without SNMP which I think is not enabled on those hosts and servers. I only got credentials to poll virtual machines, but should it be enough to see all charts that are in summary page by default? So I'm a noob, and may need some basic level help for this...

What happened to ${VolumePercentUsed} and ${VolumeDescription}

Morning.

I have generated a custom alert and looking to find the following two variables.  I have an old alert from a little while back with the variables and copied it from there, but it didn't port correctly.  So my plan was to re-add the volumepercentused, but can't seem to locate said variables.  I tried ${N=SwisEntity;M=VolumePercentUsed}, but that hasn't worked either.

Has it gone forever, or is it something that has had a name change?

Hi Team,

could someone please guide me on creating a user account to view only a specific interface details and nothing else? i tried configuring one, works well because it shows only the specific interface details upon log-in but still has a link to "HOME" which when clinked, provides information that should not be accessible to this user. is there something im missing?

thanks,

Larry Waswa.
