Do You use Product Upgrade Advisor website before you upgrade product?
SolarWinds has Product Upgrade Advisor website which helps users to validate compatibility of product versions.https://customerportal.solarwinds.com/support/product-upgrade-advisor
Do you use that prior any product upgrade?
Getting an error while clicking on Edit Node.
Hi,
I am getting an error when clicking on edit node " " Unexpected Website Error
The formatter threw an exception while trying to deserialize the message: There was an error while trying to deserialize parameter http://schemas.solarwinds.com/2008/Core:GetNodeWithOptionsResult. The InnerException message was 'Member '_compareInfo' was not found.'. Please see InnerException for more details"
I have traced the https packets and it is getting aborted. Can you please let me know what can be the reason for the same?
SSH Putty not working as expected
Hi All, This may have been answered previously but don't seem to be getting the answers or results I'm looking for. I have an issue trying to setup Putty to work correctly from the Nodes page. I have enabled the browser integration and install putty on my local machine. If I click ssh icon next to the Add Alert icon under the management section on the nodes page I get the built in ssh window pop up and I can connect without issues.
Now if I use the integration ssh icon to connect on the top right of the page I get the Putty window open but it wont connect. As I believe this is not being tunnelled via the Orion server like the built in ssh icon under the management section of the page. we have a load of support staff that will be working with Solarwinds and we cant open the firewalls with all of the users IP Address's.
Is there a way the putty can be used like the built in SSH and tunnel it via the orion server or proxy behind the orion server?
Duplicate Load Balancing entries
In the F5 environment, under network -> load balancing, for pools and pool members, I am seeing both primary and secondary device objects with is duplicating the status view for applications. One is active, other is standby. How do I filter the dashboard view to only include active nodes and not what is available on standby?

Questions Regarding Send a GET or POST Request Alert Actions in SolarWinds Orion Network Performance Monitor SLX-12.3
We have reviewed documentation and numerous postings, but still have the following questions regarding Send a GET or POST Request Alert Actions in SolarWinds:
- In the Configure Action window, in the Body to Post field, does SolarWinds support JSON?
- In the Configure Action window, in the Body to Post field, does SolarWinds support XML?
- How does one specify the HTTP header values that should be used in the HTTP Post request?
- How does one log the entire HTTP Post request that is sent, including the HTTP request header values and the request body values?
Can Standby Solarwinds instance be used with single DB in DC/DR scenario?
Hi All,
Need some inputs/suggestions please.
We have a scenario where in customer is having DC/DR setup. We need to place Solarwinds in similar way but there are some below limitations/restrictions.
1. We do have shared storage available.
2. DC and DR are having different subnet so when either fails over, IP shema will be different.
So as per my finding i see only 1 option which is using Active-Standby method with 1 change. That is, we use only Database across DC/DR. Database will be covered under SRM so at any disaster scenario, DB will be brought up and there will be proper DNS settings done so that solarwinds identifies the instance name.
So can anyone let me know if we can go with this approach? OR is there any other better option available.
Agents all go 'offline'
I have been having this odd issue were all of my agents report that they are 'offline' or in 'warning'. The only real way I have found to fix this is to reboot the Solarwinds App server or restart all of the Solarwinds services and that usually fixes things. The odd thing is it looks like the connection doesn't drop but I get warnings on all of the agents. Hoping someone else has this same issue. Support has been working on this for quite some time and nothing seems to be working. Thanks!
Change node status based on routing neighbor status
We are running NPM 12.1
I have recently enabled alerting for BGP Neighbor status. The alerting is working as designed, but I was hoping to be able to change the status of the Node, so when the BGP neighbor goes down, the node shows in the "Nodes with Problems", similar to how the node will be green with a flashing red child dot when an interface is down. I tried using the "Set Custom Status" in the alert configuration, but that only customizes the alert status.
On our MPLS network, interfaces rarely drop since carrier equipment isn't propagating status, so using the BGP Neighbor status to identify circuit drops is needed.
Is there an easy way to make this happen?
Unable to delete deactivated polling engines and web servers
I am replacing polling engines and trying to deactivate the old ones. This should be easy. I have multiple modules and multiple polling engines and web servers. I am currently on Orion Core 2017.3, and replacing all servers with shiny Windows 2016 servers to prep for the next round of upgrades. I know that you can perform a migration, but that is not the only scenario that I have.
Currently the deactivated unused polling engine option in the web console does not work if you own VNQM, and potentially other modules due to constraints. I have seen this twice now. Once with a temp polling engine that I wanted to remove and now with others that I am replacing. This needs to be fixed and automated as hunting through the database and hoping that you delete all entries in the correct order is not efficient.
I have seen the KB that describes how to reuse the ip/hostname etc. I am able to use this KB as a guide to replace my polling engines and web servers. Its quick and easy until you delete the unused server… <https://support.solarwinds.com/Success_Center/Orion_Platform/Knowledgebase_Articles/Move_an_Additional_Polling_Engine_to_another_server>
The following document does not cover all the tables: Removing old polling engines and websites from previous migrations
Below are the other tech docs that I don’t plan to use right now. I have other NPM instances, and plan to move engines between them– hence my desire to get the cleanup correct. Yes these are valid instructions, but I simply need to remove and add engines.
Migrate SolarWinds Orion products to a new server using the same IP and hostname.
Migrate SolarWinds Orion products to a new server with a new IP and hostname
Migration Guide – this document has most of the information I needed (links). I would recommend adding the link about moving the additional polling engine to another server.
Here is the link to the article about VNQM not playing nice. This is the issue that I have run into twice now. I expect it will occur every time I try to delete a polling engine via web console.
I have the following modules: ORION CORE 2017.3; NPM, NTA, NCM,SAM, IPAM, WPM, VNQM. I am prepping for the NPM 12.3 upgrade and later by getting the windows servers to Microsoft Windows 2016, and deploying a SQL Server 2016 sp1 for NTA, etc.
I don’t think that NCM uses its own engine tables anymore, but that is why I am reaching out. I don’t believe that the web servers are in any other tables except OrionServers and websites.
Temp Tables :A temp poller that I used to for monitoring while I worked on other polling engines stayed in this table, despite deactivation and cleanup. I need to reuse that name for a new webserver, and give the IP to another server. I believe I need to clean these tables up too.

This is what I believe to be the cleanup process. I am looking for confirmation.
Clean up process: Polling Engine cleanup starting with #1 and proceeding in order:
- Shutdown all services
- Log into database
- All non orion tables first, see below for suggested order.
a. NTA Netflowenginestatistics table first, then flowengines table
b. Voipengines
c. IPAM_engine
4. OrionServers Table
5. EngineProperties table
6. Engines table
Order of Web Server Cleanup - I do not know if there is an link between them, or if they are independent tables.

LETS JUMP IN
System Down Situations :
✘Orion Services flapping
✘ Orion Web Console is Down
✘ Orion Polling is Down
✘Orion Server is not responding
✘Orion Web console loading with Errors
✘Orion Server Disk is filling up Quickly
Orion Services flapping
So you always check your Orion Services Manager where you can see multiple services listed below where generally you found all Services must be UP and running all the time and should not be flapping. If you have noticed any service is flapping or not UP and running you can follow the basic steps in order to correct the issue quickly.
Check free disk space on the Orion Server as well as SQL server
Check you are not using SQL Express Edition which have 10 Gig limit
Disable any installedantivirusand confirm that no longer active
Try reboot the System and check the Services are backup UP
Check if there is any other user is not logged on to the Orion Server > Task Manager > Users (Log off them)
Logon to the Orion Server with Local Administrator account (NOT WITH DOMAIN ADMIN)
Then repair the Solarwinds Orion Core Service & Configuration Wizard as below
- Log in to Orion NPM Server as a Windows Local Administrator.
- Click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Right-click SolarWinds Orion Core Services, and select Repair.
After the repair, the Configuration Wizard is launched.
Complete the Configuration Wizard just clicking NEXT & YES options
Note that configuring the website might take a few minutes.
Complete the above steps and then check the Services are backup again ?
Please Note: If you are running Solarwinds Evaluation version and evaluation period is expired (Syslog & Traps )✘ Servers will not Start .
Important Note: While Running the Configuration Wizard > Keep opening the Orion Service Manager > Make Sure all Orion Services keep on STOPPEDstate .
If you noticed any service is Flapping during the Configuration Wizard hit the "Shutdown Everything" on the Orion Service Console until you see the Configuration Wizard start Configuring Website portion
Important Note:
While running the Configuration Wizard Open the Task Manager > Make sure the CPU and Memory is stable and have not reached up to 100% utilization for longer time perioud specially when the Solarwinds Services will be started by the Configuration Wizard in the last stage.
Sub Situations :
✘ Orion Service repaired failure refused to repair
✘Configuration Wizard failed to connect to the Orion SQL Server
✘ Configuration Wizard failed with Database Configuration Failure Error
✘ Configuration Wizard failure with Website configuration failure
Configuration Wizard failed with website failure ? Please use the below KB post

Where how and what Orion Service logs i should check for any Errors / Issues ?
Orion logs are always available under this location (Please Note programData Folder is system hidden folder by default)
C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds
C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Orion
For Example :
If you have noticed the Orion JobEngine is Flapping and Unable to Start .
You can open this log file below . (Scroll Down to the bottom of the file and check what type of Error you have while this Service failure
C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\JobEngine.v2\Logs\SolarWinds.JobEngineService_v2_13.log
Solarwinds Information Service V3 is failed to start of flapping
You can always check your log file here > Open the file scroll down to the bottom and check what type of ERRORS you have.
C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\InformationService\v3.0\Orion.InformationService.log
Solarwinds Recommendation Service is flapping
Check this file Open and check the last ERROR in the file if its repeating again and again.
C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Recommendations\Recommendations.Services.log
SolarWinds Cortex Service flapping
C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Cortex\cortex.log
So all the logs are basically available under the same location.
Now if you have success with above steps however High CPU / Website Performance issues
Performance and Health Check:
My Orion Website & Server is very slow / CPU & Memory Spike what should i check quickly ?

SolarWinds Two-Way integration with Ticketing Systems
Hello
I have a couple of questions:
Q1: Does Orion recommend (even unofficially) any fully automated (without manual coding) 3rd party tool that allows smooth Two-Way integration with Major Ticketing systems like :
- BMC: Remedy
- HP: ITSM / HPSD / HPSM /HPSC, etc ... ?
- CA: IT Service Desk
Must guarantee closing Ticket when Node/Interface is Up without delay
Q2: If not, which one would you guys recommend ? Something that really works without push
Thank you

How to import a sharepoint page into Solarwinds
We have a change management system in place, but having this open and solarwinds, and helpdesk, makes everything so messy... so we roll it all into one page. Took a bit of playing around, and since i couldn't find anything on these forums i thought i would share...
If you want to import a external website or sharepoint site into solarwinds page you can do it via the <IFRAME> </IFRAME> tag.
1. Create a Custom HTML/Text page on your site.2. Go to the site you have added the HTML/Text page and hit edit.
3. Enter:
<style type="text/css">
iframe { overflow:hidden; }
</style>
<iframe src="***WEBSITE HERE***" width="100%" height="1100px" ></iframe>
4. This allows you to link to things like, outlook calendar, sharepoint, servicedesk sites, event management sites... or whatever. and centralises it all in solarwinds. Here’s a example of what we have done, with outlook calendar for planned outages in sharepoint:http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/4857/forumsd1.pnghttp://img255.imageshack.us/img255/4857/forumsd1.png If there’s a better way to do this i would love to hear it, i know its very simple compared to some of the work on these forums but hey... it works.
Customising "Top Capacity Problems"
Hi,
I am having issues using the "Top Capacity Problems" resource. I want to customise the view so that I can add this resource to different "groups" that have been created to enable us to manage the Capacity Forecast on a group level.
However, when I try to use the filters within the Edit screen I get errors relating to the Solarwinds Information service. The service itself is absolutely fine so I presume the filter is incorrect,
Anyone been able to do this or able to offer some help?

SQL Code for Node and Interface Count per Site
Hi All.
Our business has multiple sites, with many nodes and interfaces monitored by NPM at larger sites. We have a custom field on Nodes, Airport_Code, which is the airport code of the nearest major Airport. I was wanting to do some planning for APEs, and wanted to see how many nodes and interfaces are in the database on a per-site basis. I share here what I found, in the hopes that this may be of value to you.
The keys here are to do a Left Join between Nodes and Interfaces tables, and include the word Distinct in the NodeID count.
When just using Distinct, with just an Inner Join, I didn’t see all records – just records which also had interfaces. We happen to have several nodes with no interfaces in management in some locations. Those weren’t being counted using Inner Join. Using Left Join, all Node records were selected, not just the ones which had interfaces under management.
When not using the word Distinct in the NodeID count, you will get the same number for NodeID count as Interface count. That's because each interface has a node associated with it, and the SQL query will count every NodeID listed (ie. a NodeID which has 3 managed Interfaces will be counted 3 times under Node ID). So, use Distinct to count only the unique occurrences of the NodeID.
Here is the SQL Code:
SELECT
Nodes.Airport_Code AS Airport_Code, COUNT(DISTINCT Nodes.NodeID) AS Node_Cnt,COUNT(Interfaces.InterfaceID) AS Interface_Cnt
FROM
Nodes LEFT JOIN Interfaces ON (Nodes.NodeID = Interfaces.NodeID)
GROUP BY Nodes.Airport_Code
ORDER BY 2 DESC
Here is our output (numbers and codes have been changed slightly):
Airport_Code Node_Cnt Interface_Cnt
SEA 662 2800
PDX 623 1656
SFO 467 2507
LAX 343 887
...
I hope this if of help to someone out there. Cheers!
Windows Managed Service Accounts and Solarwinds/Orion.
We're thinking of converting our "standard" windows service user accounts to Windows Managed service accounts.
Any experience with setting up Windows Managed Service accounts, problems, incidents, impact, etc. information you care to share will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
