Cisco VG310 Power Supply in Warning

$

We have 3x Cisco VG310's that we added today and they Power Supplies for all of them are in a Warning Status.

2015-08-13_16h49_42.png

When we go to check the status on the devices themselves they are showing Normal.

VG310#sh env all

SYSTEM POWER SUPPLY STATUS

==========================

Power Supply Type: AC

Power Supply 12V Output Status: Normal

I'm assuming that this is a false positive within Orion since they are new models of Voice Gateways, but I haven't been able to find any discussions or documentation supporting this hypothesis. I know the Cisco 3850 switches have a similar problem with Orion seeing false positives with their power supplies, but there is a way to resolve that issue.

Has anyone else ran into this problem?

False alerts on Checkpoint devices

$

I have been troubleshooting false alerts on checkpoint devices for quite a while.   Hopefully someone here can help out some.

This is our configuration.

  • Orion Platform 2014.2.1, IPAM 4.2, NCM 7.3.2, NPM 11.0.1, NTA 4.1.0, UDT 3.1.0, IVIM 1.10.0, VNQM 4.2
    • Everything except for our Neflow server are on virtual servers.
    • We have two pollers.
    • All SW Servers are located in the same datacenter.
    • Checkpoints are across the country.

When we get a false alert: (they are random and not consistent)

  • If you log into the Poller that device is assigned to, you can't ping or trace route to that device.   However if  you log into the other poller or from your desktop you can ping and trace route without issues.   This happens more often on our primary poller, but has happened on our secondary poller.
  • The false alerts many times bounce (show down, up, down, up about every 10 or so minutes)

I have:

  • Had our server team look at the servers and they have not located any issues.
  • Restarted the servers
  • Firewall team (responsible for the checkpoints) do not show issues or blocks
  • Updated the SW MIBS file
  • This is happening ONLY on Checkpoint devices.  Other monitored devices are not giving false alerts.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Sometimes devices show up in Orion as "unknown".  Those devices need to be added to our SysObjectID database.  We know about lots of them, but we'd like to hear which items you need.

 We need:

Tips and Tricks for Managing Traps and Syslog in Orion NPM

Traps Filter Plan:

The best way to maintain the size of your Traps tables it to change the retention settings for your traps. This can be set in the Trap Viewer, in Settings. By Default, we keep traps for 7 days - this can be reduced to keep the size of the database smaller.

Also, I would suggest checking the Trap Viewer for the types of traps being received. If you are receiving a lot of info/debug severity messages from a device, the device itself can be set up to only send higher severity messages. Your vendor should be able to provide configuration commands for sending Traps on the device.

Also, look for traps being received by the Trap Viewer that you are not interested in keeping - you can create a new Rules based on these Traps by right-clicking and choosing Add Rule, to discard those messages. It should automatically will out all tabs of the new rule to match that trap exactly. Use wildcards ( * ) as appropriate to expand what the rule will match to. Add the actions to "Discard the Trap Message" and to "Stop processing Trap rules".

Trap rules are checked in order top-to-bottom - placing these discard rules at the top of the list will ensure that these messages are discarded first, and that no other rules are checked against those messages.

Syslog Filter Plan:

Option 1 Easy Solution is to stop Orion’s Syslog Service, This Stops Syslog Table from Growing again.

Option 2 Edit Your Syslog Retention Settings to keep Syslogs for x Days. I would suggest you tune the Severity levels for the Syslog output on your devices to Warning or above. Launch the Syslog view on the server and go to Server Settings. On the first tab you have a keep data for an amount of days option. Reduce this.

Option 3 On your Device - Tell them to stop sending some or all Syslog messages

Option 4 Syslog Message comes to Orion, Syslog Service. Using Rules from Syslog Viewer to Determine whether you want to Store the Syslog message in the Database or whether to discard message.

If you have a definite need for level 5 (notice) or above, you will have to look at the data retention settings in the Syslog application within Orion. Alternatively you could use filter Rules so that the ones which filter and discard messages, are at the top of the list. This will ensure that they are processed first.

I recommend to make sure that all rules which are set up to “Discard messages” also contain the line "Stop processing syslog rules".

The syslog and traps filter/rules work very differently to the Orion alerting engine. Each time a syslog message or trap is received it will work through every rule, from the top, until it either gets to the end, or hit a rule that specifically tells it to "stop processing rules".

"Discard Syslog Message"

Start -> Program Files -> Solarwinds -> Orion -> Syslog Viewer

From this tool, Goto File -> Syslog Server settings -> Alert/Filter Rules Tab

In here you can filter using various methods, By IP address, by Message Type Patterns, Syslog Message Patterns, Severity, etc…

And then Add the following Alert Actions to your Rule: "Discard Syslog Message" "Stop processing syslog rules"

"Stop processing syslog rules" Rearrange the syslog rules so that the ones which filter and discard messages, are at the top of the list. This will ensure that they are processed first.

I recommend to make sure that all rules which are set up to “Discard messages” also contain the line "Stop processing syslog rules".

Warning about the size of Syslog table

Issue:

Syslog table runs out of space.

Cause:

Syslog messages, existing traps and trap variable bindings continue to pile up, consuming space in the Orion NPM database

NPM 11.5 - How long each interface or node was down

$

I found some old threads that talk about setting up a view or report to show a cumulative value of how long each node or interface has been down.

Some of the images that show the steps are no longer there making it difficult to make this work.

I'm really only looking to create a report of how long a node / interface has been down and then limit the report to anything greater than 24 hours.

Has anyone done this is NPM 11.5? Is there a guide or steps?

NPM Having trouble validating SNMP read/write string

$

I just added a new Minuteman RPM series UPS to the network and am trying to add it as a node with SNMP credentials so we can use UnDPs to monitor specific values, but no matter what Read/Write string I configure on the UPS, Solarwinds tells me that the node does not respond with that Read/Write string.  The only way I can add the node is to leave the Read/Write field blank, but then the UnDPs provide no data.

TL;DR Node not responding to Read/Write string, what do?

unmanage utility

Strangest thing has happened.

We had to build a new server for Orion, and of course none of the unmanage tasks get moved.  So I figure no big deal I can recreate them all. I recreate them exactly as they were before (same accounts and such), and the all return a (0x1) in the results section of the scheduled tasks.  I get an xml editor and see that they are totally different.  The ones that I saved from the old server list all the server names/IP addresses in the file.  From the new server, there is no listing of the servers.

Any ideas what is happening and how to correct it?

Thanks

I'm trying to access some data directly from the Orion database, Looking at the AlertActive table I don't see any way to determine if the alert is on a Node, Interface or Volume. is there an easy way I can get this information by joining to another table?

How to read Solarwinds Bandwidth Monitor

$

I've recently started using the SolarWinds Bandwidth Monitor to keep track of a long standing problem we've been having with our internet connection.  Before starting to run this my monitoring has consisted of ping -t on the IP that I believe represents our modem and the IP for the first Time Warner server hop to anywhere.  At irregular times of day and for irregular intervals the ping will spike dramatically, we're talking 1-3 seconds and timing out.  In order to better monitor what is happening I have tried several bandwidth monitors.  I haven't been especially happy with any of them for my very specific needs, but SolarWinds has a very friendly graphical display, or it would be if I had any idea what I was specifically looking at.

I have it monitoring the router.  I had the option of eth0 and eth1 which were both showing activity.  eth0 shows activty in Traffic Out and eth1 shows activity in Traffic In.  They're identical, just opposite.  Unfortunately I really don't know what, specifically, it is or is referencing.  Since they show the same information, just flipped I chose to only monitor eth0.

During normal activity Traffic In hangs out very close to 0 bps.  Traffic Out is always above Traffic In, running a jagged line that peaks around 1.3 or 1.4 Mbps.  On my command prompt ping -ts this comes out as a consistently flow of 9-15ms to both IPs.  During a spike Traffic In jumps to 1.1-1.3 Mbps and Traffic Out drops down below that to close to 0 consistently without any, or only occasional, spikes.  Again, I don't know what it means, but it happens every time the ping times out.

Hi ,

Can someone help me in finding the MIBs that I can sue to integrate Solarwinds with Netcool.

I need mibs required to integrate (to forward the alerts) from solarwind version XXXXXX with any tool via SNMP traps.

Please tell me the location where I can find these MIbs on Solarwinds. I am using Orion Platform version 2014.2.1

How to create dynamic query for application or interface based on node custom properties ?

$

Hi,

We like to create dynamic group for some specific interface or application.

We have already add custom properties to nodes and we like to use these properties to create interface and application group.

Node have a specific custom property: DeliveryGroup.

We are able to create a Group based on this custom property, however when we want to create an interface group we can only select interface custom properties.

Is there already a way to create a group of object (anything else node) based on node custom properties ?

Cheers
