Super easy question: On a linear graph I want to set a vertical axis standard value, in trying to edit it, I don't have this option.

Configuring our UPS templates and I have this linear graph for temperature.

I don't want the trend line to show max height when the value is at it's normal. In the pic below, the temp is normally 28 degrees, I'd rather set the max to be 50 or 70 degrees.

Orion NPM 10.7 & newer - Report Scheduler

I've searched these forums and not found an answer, so opened a Ticket (859506) with SW support for the following:

NPM Report Scheduler jobs not found in Windows Task Scheduler

I'm trying to send (e-mail) a scheduled report every 2 hours.
In the past (Pre NPM10.7) I would create the report in the Orion Report scheduler, which only allowed daily reporting.
Then I could find the report under the Windows Task scheduler and edit it to send every 2 hours.
In this case, I do not see any of my Scheduled reports in the Windows task scheduler.
Where have they all gone, and how can I edit them to send them on a more frequent schedule?
I am running Windows Server 2008 R2.

I'm told this function has been removed from the Windows task scheduler, so it is no longer possible to send hourly alerts.

That is, without setting up 12 separate times (every 2 hours) in the new web based report scheduler console to send alerts 7x24.

In my book, that is a huge step backwards and completely unmanageable.

Is anyone else missing this functionality?

  • Example1, we just had a huge windstorm which knocked out power to many monitored nodes in one region.I want to send a hourly e-mail update to management & directors with the currently down nodes in this region.

  • Example2, there is a company wide video presentation for the next 2 hours. I want to send 10 minute e-mail updates to management & directors with network utilization on or VPN infrastructure used by remote employees watching this presentation.

I think you can see setting up a separate time alert for each e-mail interval is not sustainable, especially when it was such a simple thing to create a repeating action in Windows Task Scheduler.

Now the (possible) good part:

NCM Job Scheduler uses Cron to create scheduled repeating jobs at any interval you want.

(We have used this functionality to gather interface statistics on our switches every 15 minutes)

Is there some way to use this same Cron engine and GUI to schedule NPM reports?

Here is the instructions from the NCM Job scheduler:

An asterisk (*) can be used to specify each value in a range. For example, if you specify an asterisk for the day of the month range, the recurrence is daily. You can specify a range with a field or individual values. To specify a range use the dash (-). To specify individual values, use the comma (,) as a separator. For example, 1-5 in the day of the week range means Monday through Friday. 1,5 in the day of the week range means Monday and Friday.» Help me understand CRON expressions

Cisco ASA as a Default gateway?

There has been over 1 million of Cisco ASAs built and deployed around the world in a past years (good job Cisco!). As not supporting SNMP protocol properly, they often complicate our lives when configured to be Default gateways, not allowing products like SolarWinds User Device Tracker to monitor what's behind. Do you use your ASAs as a Default gateways too? If so, what percentage of your network they route?

NPM Website - HTTP Error 500.19 Internal Server Error

This is something interesting.  Installing the inetpub on drive C works, but the client wants it on Drive E.  In putting on drive E, we got the 500.19 error.

We finally got it to work and the solution involves changing the identity on the SolarWinds application pool from NetworkServices to LocalServices.

Orion DB is sending huge sql data to secondary poller

I have recently upgrade the Solarwinds and added a secondary poller to the Orion. The network team found through Netflow that the Orion DB is sending nearly 600mb/hr to the secondary poller. The source is from the Orion DB and destination is the Orion secondary poller, it was strange as previously we got this problem where the poller is sending huge data to the Orion DB but this time, it was the other way around. Is this normal? We are monitoring around 200++ nodes but why the DB is sending data to pollers?

Tell us your "Unknown" devices!

Sometimes devices show up in Orion as "unknown".  Those devices need to be added to our SysObjectID database.  We know about lots of them, but we'd like to hear which items you need.

 We need:

SysObjectID (which you can find in Node Details) in System Manager.

How would you migrate Reports, ICMP Nodes (with names), Schedules, Custom Polling, etc. from one NPM to another?

We're upgrading from slightly older NPM versions (Orion Platform 2014.2.1, QoE 1.0, NPM 11.0.1, NTA 3.11.0) to the latest version of NPM and changing multiple stand-alone NPM instances to one corporate NPM with multiple pollers.

We had to choose between upgrading our existing NPM or going with a clean/fresh install that uses new IP addresses and new servers, new databases, and new names.  We chose the Clean Install route, and it's going well enough.  We understood that this path would cause us to lose historical statistics.  But we hoped that many things we'd built over the years might not need to be manually recreated.

My questions to you are:

1. What process is available to migrate customized reports from a legacy NPM to a new one?

2. How can we migrate nodes monitored only by IP address and include their custom names along with their IP addresses?

3.  Is there a simple method of copying, exporting, and importing customized pollers, reports, schedules, etc. from one instance of NPM to a new instance of NPM before shutting the old one down?

Yours,

Rick S.

Manage pollers, then selecting CPU & Memory poller getting Error: A query to the SolarWinds Information Service failed.

I've got a bunch of Cisco switches that I need to enable cpu & memory monitoring on.  Rather than go through and do a "List Resources" on each of the devices, I was hoping to do this in bulk.  So I went to Settings -> Manage Pollers, then select "Solarwinds Native Poller" as author, then CPU & Memory, and when I click on the number under assigned nodes, I get the following error - Error: A query to the SolarWinds Information Service failed.  I am unable to see what nodes have and do not have the CPU & Memory polling assigned.  It also failed on the "Node details" poller, but not the "Hardware Health Sensors" pollers.  One thing to note, and not sure if it plays a part, but the number of nodes for CPU & memory & the Node Details pollers i is over 2000, where the hw health poller is around 1200.  Any suggestions or ideas?

I'm on the User Experience (UX) team at SolarWinds and am looking for people who can spend 1 hour for a  remote User Experience feedback session. The sessions are tentatively scheduled for September 10, 15 and 22.

We're working on a new feature to help with troubleshooting root causes for various services along a specific path, and need people to review designs and give us their thoughts.

In order to make sure we reach our targeted users we ask that you complete a quick survey screener. You will get 5 Thwack points simply by just completing the survey and an additional 2000 thwack points if selected for the study.

Thanks!

Is there a log file associated with the network sonar discovery job? Where could I find it.

As above where might I be able to see the log file associated with the network sonar discovery job? From where is this job ran? I deally I'd like to be able to view the job's log much like I can with jobs that are ran from the NCM schedule jobs page on my NCM server. Here I can just right click on the job and I can view the log. Anything similar for Network Sonar Discovery job? Thanks

NPM showing high packet loss on a couple VMs

Hello, I'm a NPM newbie. Just started using the product recently.

I have a couple virtual machines that always trigger alerts for high Packet loss - but when running manual (continuous) pings to those VMs they dont ever seem to drop a packet and all have <1ms latency.

But no matter what I seem to do they keep triggering in NPM with high packet loss alerts.

The VMs are on ESXi 6.0 - Some are windows2012r2 some are server 2008r2 - Also each VM has a dedicated network card assigned to it - I also tried giving them more hardware to see if that was causing response time issues.

Multi-server Architecture

Hello, I have been using several of the solorwinds products for years, however, I've never had multiple servers (separating NPM/NCM/SAM...etc). My current setup is a single server with NPM, NCM, SAM, IPAM, VNMQ, but we are now destroying the server with all of the polling. I have created a new architecture with NPM, NCM, SAM, IPAM, Syslog all on separate servers. Everything is installed and ready to go and I'm transferring nodes, but my question is how do I integrate all of the modules? I understand the IPAM is separate always (which I hate), and NCM you have to run the integration piece, but in order to get to the other modules I have to open a new window to navigate to the other server. Also, how do I integrate the separate Syslog into the node view? Does EOC pull all of that together? I feel like this is a new user question and I consider myself a fairly advanced users haha.

Im hoping I just missed something easy.

newbie with less than 30 PCs, no server

1.  retired, volunteer at a 501c3 that has less than 30 PCs with two buildings next to each other (one is two stories, the other is one story).

2.  a comcast business gateway in each building.

3.  in one building is a tenant very small private 501c3 k-12, I have two wireless routers on their floor (2nd floor).

4.  the school will eventually use tablets and a few computers to do Khan Academy streaming content.

5.  I am the person that keeps the PCs running, all running windows 7 and all older equipment.

6.  I have another volunteer job teaching senior citizens about computers at two locations including this one.  Have been doing this for almost three years.

7.  Teaching seniors is email, internet, beginning computers,... started last year to teach google apps and the cloud...

8.  Kids just started to go to school in this building and am guessing they will be schooled in google apps...

9.  another mission for the 501c3 that owns the property is on the first floor with the school, very small staff but older computers

10. I am also on the board of the main 501c3 and have reconfigred both buildings as described to get the school into the 2 story building...

11. I usually carry around a chromebook laptop and have suggested that if we need to do a serious upgrade of the PCs then we go to chromebooks...

I would like to know what is going on with the two comcast gateways and the wireless routers and ... and ... and ... I want to know telemetry of the network...

I can/have loaded the "free" solarwinds software on one of the PCs in the main building...

can I get to see the numbers from all the various network and PCs ?

I guess I just need to deal with the software on the PC computer (not a server) but I can run it as the main solarwinds computer that collects the data I think...

any thoughts would be appreciated...

Noob Question about SMS

I have NPM emailing to SMS when an issue arises.  My problem is that it always comes in from a different number.  Is there a way to set the number?  Or since it is a email to SMS that isn't an option?  What is the best solution?

Thank you and sorry for the noob question.

Multiple Poller Performance: What Works?

$

We're coming up on the need for multiple pollers, and the new pollers will be placed in WAN-separated sites.  Naturally I'd like to keep the WAN chatter to a minimum, so I'm wondering how people before me have prevented this from being an issue, since -- as I understand it -- each remote poller will want to frequently discuss life with the main DB located on our first/main Orion server. Some questions:

Firstly, is this even a real problem?  Do remote pollers chat that much with the DB? Assuming they do, what seems to be the best solution?

The fix I was thinking about was clustering the DB servers and letting each site chat locally, then letting the DBMS replication do the dirty work at some stately scheduled pace.  Of course the problem there is that the data is no longer "live", but at least each local copy is, which also soothes my desire for CYA backups.  Aside from the update delay you also have an alert-awareness delay, but adding remote pollers to the show pretty much guarantees a delay somewhere, so you may as well try to mitigate the delay duration and location.  (As an aside, might there be a way to perform a similar trick with Patch Manager, so that remote hits on that DB are faster too?)

I've read the basic Solarwinds docs, but I wanted to hear about real-life experiences.  What are the issues, options, etc. you've run into, and what does / doesn't work?

(If this has been beaten to death before, just point me that-a-ways.)

Thanks!

Overall Hardware Status has state "could not poll"

Hi,

As the title really, one of my switches has the above state, I have restarted the polling service on the server to no avail, I don't really want to delete the node and re-add it as it is one of our core switches.

Any ideas?

Also as a side note only a handful of my Cisco devices are reporting hardware status, how do I get them all to report?

Thanks in advance.
