Anyone ever have trouble with NPM not monitoring itself well?

$

Here's a couple examples.  Recently I found this when looking at a UPS:

poller.png

Um, it's not September anymore. So what is happening is that Orion is no longer getting data back when polling this node.  Am I getting an error?  Does the Node have a red flashing box?  Am I getting a daily report that something is amiss?  No on all counts. This is frustrating beyond my ability to express it.

So, how many nodes have this issue? According to tech support, there is no way to run a report to find out. I suppose I could just pull up all 2000 of my nodes one at a time to check.  Seriously.

Last night I had another issue that is along the same vein but somewhat different. There was some amount of service stopping and starting on my main server, and several nodes just stopped being polled.  How many?  Again, no way to know.  They just appear green, but there are no statistics being collected. No Application stats in SAM.    No CPU.  No Memory.  No Disk.  No network stats including latency, which leads me to believe no polling (not even ping) was occurring.  Error?  Down or unknown node?  Nope.  All happy green.  Nothing wrong here.  *SIGH*  Rebooting an additional poller fixed the issue, but I was just lucky to stumble upon it before the Thanksgiving holiday.

So there's the rant.  Now let's talk solutions:

For UnDP issues, Orion should 1) Change the Node graphic to have a flashing red box like an interface was down (or make it a global check box option), and 2) Create a report to show Top 10/All node that have UnDP that have not updated in 12 hours or some other arbitrary value.

For the times when Orion mysteriously stops polling, I'm open to suggestions. Maybe each poller should have a separate process that checks all nodes on all pollers to be sure data is populating. Run in every hour, once a day, whatever. It's not complicated, just check and see if there is SOMETHING from a node in the last hour or so.

Am I alone in seeing these issues?

Alert Manager- Alerts with variables?

Hello all,

I am a newbie so please go easy on me.

I have 60 ESXI hosts that I want to create alerts for and am really hoping I do not have to make a separate alert for each host.

My hostnames are as follows:

c01esxihost01

c02esxihost01

c03esxihost01.... all the way up to 62.

Here is what I have so far:

Is there anyway I could make it something like this:  Node Name is equal to c**esxi01

I do see the "starts with" option, it would be nice if there was an "ends with"..

Any advice would be much appreciated.

thanks,

Bmoore

Dependencies - with parent router to group of dependencies alerts

$

Hello all,

I have been digging through the discussions hoping to find one similar to mine. No luck!

My question is on dependencies and alerts. I have created a Group and added all my dependencies of a location to it. I have made the main router the parent to the child dependencies. When the parent sire router goes down i only receive the alert on the down parent. That much s correct. But when the parent comes up i receive the up alert for it and then an up alert for all the dependencies also.

I am trying to thin the amount of alerts i receive. If this worked as design i would only receive 2 alerts. the down & up of the parent.

Any ideas?

30 remote site need monitoring but each site is connected via 256kbps link

I want to know if it is possible to monitor 30 sites over a 256 kbps VSAT connection?  The equipment at the other end of each site consists of a Cisco router, switch, firewall, HP Blade server and NetApp.  Could I monitor all this from one central site polling anywhere between 2 and 5 minutes.  The link would also be used for email traffic.  I know I could do this with higher bandwidth connections.  What are the recommendations from the experts out there?

A Christmas Upgrade Story

$

Of course YOU'D never schedule an upgrade over Christmas, but this is the time for fun and for fiction.

'Twas the night of the upgrade, and all ‘cross the Net

Not a user was surfing (‘cept one named Annette).

The backups were placed by the server with care,

In hopes that the upgrade would cause no lost hair;

The admins were nestled all snug in their beds;

Their Samsung VR’s strapped on tight to their heads;

My Engineer’s Toolset and laptop in hand,

I’d just settled down for an upgrade quite bland.

When out from my speaker there came such a clatter,

I started a Ping Sweep to see what was the matter.

Away to Orion I keyboarded fast,

And checked out the syslog for what happened last.

The news was all good, and the upgrade near done,

It proved that my Toolset was just having fun,

When what to my wondering eyes did appear,

But a miniature Microsoft logo so clear,

With a funky new driver so lively and Zen,

I knew in a moment it must be V 10!

More rapid than eagles the messages came,

I whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

"Now, DDos! now, Trojan! Melissa and Wyrms!

On, Klez and NTP-123! You Germs!!

Stay out of my network, my Next Gen Firewall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As Admins that to South Padre Isle may fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, flip to the sky;

So off to the neighbors this malware all flew

With a payload of garbage, and Microsoft too—

And then, in a twinkling, I saw from aloof

The warnings and e-mails from phishes that spoof.

They tried through the wireless, which was thankfully down,

They tried through the e-mail but met with a frown.

Our Next-Gen and AV and ISE and our NAC,

Quietly worked and protected our back.

A packet arrived for dst one-twenty-seven,

‘Twas dumped in the bucket and left there to leaven.

The certs that were broken all made me guffaw

For I’d dumped One for Two, and their types were all SHA.

Even UPS serial lines were protected,

And the bad guys’ bad traffic had all been rejected;

Though he hammered and pounded, I showed him my teeth,

And the smoke that it caused was my happy bequeath;

I found he was relaying all ‘round the world

But his D-DOS was failing, and round him it swirled.

I finished the upgrade and tested it true,

And I laughed when I thought of his frustrated crew;

All hoping to fool me with MS V Ten

While I blew in their eyes my pepper Cayenne.

I spoke not a word, but went straight back to work,

And wrote to my peers of the sneaky old jerk,

And flipping a finger that he couldn’t see,

I packed up my laptop and pulled my goatee;

And started the Prius and I called to my gnome,

And away then I flew down the road to my home.

But I rolled down the window to shout with my might—

“My upgrade is done, and the network’s alright!”

May your holiday work schedule be light!

Any one know if this is possible?  Maybe an advanced sql alert.

Example is Internet Uplink interfaces.  (Hope I'm articulating this well enough) Basically predictive in nature.  I know that today at 2:00 PM the traffic should be at x, based on the pattern over two weeks.  If the traffic pattern falls outside one or two standard deviations of this average, alert.

transferring monitoring from Argent, have a question

We are transferring our server monitoring from Argent to SolarWinds and I have a question regarding one of the things the Argent admin was doing that I need to "translate" to work in SolarWinds.  Currently Argent connects to the Windows file servers via NetRemoteTOD (time of day) API to verify a server is up and operational.  They want to go beyond the simple ping to ensure it really is up and functioning and not in a hung state.  I am guessing we can do this somehow with SAM, but we have a limited number of licenses (not enough to monitor a sevice on all the servers), so what would you folks recommend to manage something like this?  Thank you.

System time change causing temporary unresponsive system

Hello all,

    Thank you for the response in advance.  I have tried to find the answer online, but my google-fu is apparently weak today.  I had a windows 2008 r2 box (virtual - not sure if this matters) have a system time change today and became non responsive in Orion for about a minute.  My thought is, the time change happened for whatever reason, took a minute for the change to take effect and when orion communicated (WMI), it didn't respond (or timeout) because it was in the midst of this change.  Does that sound plausible?

Building an interfaces Alert with Nodes Custom Properties

$

Hi.

i tried to build an interfaces alert, and include some nodes custom properties. but in the sent e-mail, i only get the variables instead of the text those should invoke.

¿Is there any way to do this?.

This is an example.

CLIENTE: ${N=SwisEntity;M=CustomProperties.CLIENTE}
 SUCURSAL: ${N=SwisEntity;M=CustomProperties.SUCURSAL}
 CIUDAD: ${N=SwisEntity;M=CustomProperties.City}

 RESPONSABLE: ${N=SwisEntity;M=CustomProperties.AREA}

This works allright with node based alerts, but with others not,  and this info is fairly important, we are concentrating all alerting in our service desk since they operate 24x7, and this info should lessen the time and escalation errors

Thanks in advance

Does network discovery give SNMP results precedence over WMI results?

$

We have windows servers that have both SNMP and WMI enabled on them. The nodes are currently in NPM being monitored as WMI nodes.  When discovery finds them it seems to take the SNMP results and ignores the WMI results.

The only way I've found to stop it from using SNMP over WMI results from discovery is to disable SNMP on the server. That way the only protocol discovery can use is WMI.

Is this the current design of discovery?

Adding node process gets halfway then starts back at the beginning

After upgrading to NPM 11.5 and SAM 6.2, actually I believe it started after upgrading to NPM 11.0.1 and SAM 6.1 as I did them fairly close together, whenever I add a new node (Windows Node using WMI or SNMP) the following happens:

I click Add New Node

Put in a FQDN, Use WMI, leave the default Poller, test the connection, click Next

Choose my Resources, click Next

Select my Application monitors, click Next

And then I’m taking back to the “Add Node” screen????

If I continue through the process a second time it will work properly and add the node but this seems to happen the first time I go to add a node. If I add additional nodes then I don’t have this problem unless I wait a couple hours or a day, then it happens again.

Is this happening to anyone else of is it just me?

Node names changing to polling IP

What would cause node names to randomly change from a friendly (and sometimes manually set) name to the polling IP?  Happens across 3 separate NPM environments.  Persists through multiple versions of the product.  Only happens to Windows nodes.

Receiving alerts that VMware virtual machines are down, but they are not.

I am receiving multiple several times a day on all my VM's indicating they are down, but they are not.  I get the reset alert a couple of minutes later.  This is happening on all vm's on all the hosts, including the vCenter server, which is a physical box.  What could be generating the alerts, where should I look to see what might be generating the alerts?
