Since the release on NPM 12.0 we've been hard at working building the next round of exciting functionality and improvements in existing functionality.  I'm pleased to share the following list of items we're working on:

  • Improved Meraki Wireless Support - Full support for Meraki wireless access points
  • Silence Alerts - Silence Alerts While Still Monitoring
  • Network Insight for Cisco ASA - Covering things like VPN tunnel monitoring, ACL visibility, and improved platform health (H/A status, hardware health).
  • Faster and web based simplified product upgrades and installation of hot fixes
  • Integrated Disaster Recovery Engine
  • Windows Authentication for SQL DB - Orion can optionally use AD user credentials to authenticate to the SQL database instead of SQL local credentials.
  • Performance Analyzer - Pull metrics, statuses, events and other data sets into a single view with a shared timeline for correlation and faster troubleshooting.
  • Import nodes from file with custom properties

OffDenied

Hi folks

Running Solarwinds NPM v12.0.

We have a Cisco Nexus 9000 C9369PX chassis with two N9K-PAC-650w power supply in it and the power supply status are hardware alarm mode with a status of

"OffDenied".  Have no idea what that means, never seen it before.  So before I call support, thought I would ask here.

Please let me know if this means anything to you.

Thanks in advance.

When you installed NPM, did you add Nodes manually or did you run discovery?

We would like to improve user experience and for such reason I'd like to better understand if our users prefers INITIALLY to add nodes manually or run product network discovery in order to import devices to NPM

To SaaS or not to SaaS, that is the question.

Please help us understand your organization's thinking on this topic by selecting how much you agree or disagree with the following statement:

"My company would never purchase a SaaS-based monitoring tool to monitor our on-premises IT infrastructure."

I am trying to find a way to remove all the lookback interfaces that are being monitored. I doubt I can do this in the browser, how could one do that with SQL.

Alert - Responding to SNMP?

I would like to create an Alert when a device stops responding to SNMP. I do not see this as a choice when creating an Alert. I can however create a view in SYS Mgr with this field?
Can anyone help me to determine how to create this alert?

multi-device chart / graph

Hello,

I am using Network Performance Monitor.

I'd like to learn how to setup a graph with multiple devices. I am troubleshooting an issue & need to correlate behavior on one device vs another. More specifically, I need to show that nodes on one side of a service has much lower latency than devices on another side of the service. Also, it would be great to demonstrate that through various other conditions, such as switch port utilize on a particular node.

Right now I have multiple graphs, that I adjust zoom on to account for the same time period. Then I have to use screenshots or output to excel to show comparable time period. However, that is time consuming and doesn't make the case as well.

Ideally, I would be able to add the metrics (latency, packet loss, interface bps) for difference nodes on the same chart, as difference colored axis. Then I can zoom in on a specific time period and see what all the nodes were doing for that time in one chart.

Is there a way to do that? Create a chart that utilizes data from multiple nodes?

Thanks,

Ben

DB Maintenance - How to Handle It When Some Tables Have Tens of Millions of Rows?

$

As an accidental DBA, I'm having trouble determining how to handle maintenance on our Orion DB. When using the built in DB maintenance plan, the maintenance jobs inevitably end up running longer and longer due to HUGE amounts of data being dumped in a few tables daily. Eventually, the jobs run for days on end. The issue is several tables are growing to tens of millions of rows with one growing to hundreds of millions before the configured 7 day retention pruning occurs. Without shortening the retention period to clean out the daily tables quicker or turning down the volume on collected node info, I'm weighing my options for running maintenance to re-org/rebuild indexes and update statistics without having locks on these tables for days.

Here's my thoughts - open for comment:

1. Disable the built-in DB maintenance (how...rename the .exe?)

2. Create stored procedures for each of the following (based on Ola Hallengren's SQL Maintenance Solution at https://ola.hallengren.com/):

     a. Database backups nightly

     b. Data integrity checks nightly

     c. Nightly index re-org/rebuilds and update statistics (actions determined by % fragmentation)

It's my understanding that stored procedures run more efficiently than SQL Maintenance Plans or maintenance jobs built by SQL queries (which is how I believe the .exe is doing it). So, how do those of you with large environments and tons of data being stored in your DB's handle this?

Thanks for any help!

Unable to add a node via SNMPv3

Hello Guys,

We just purchased NPA, NTA, UDT, NCM, Engineer Tool set, and IP Address Manager. I'm trying to add my network switches, which are Dell Force10, to Solarwinds Orion.

The problem that I am having is I could not add a switch to Orion via SNMPv3. When I checked the log on my switch Force10 S50v, I got this SNMP authentication failed error.

Apr 30 12:12:51.756 EDT: %STKUNIT0-M:CP %SNMP-3-SNMP_AUTH_FAIL: SNMP Authentication failure for SNMP request from host 172.16.0.50

The current switch config is this:

snmp-server engineID local 0000000007

snmp-server enable traps

snmp-server group GROUP01 3 priv read SNMPv3-VIEW

snmp-server user USER01 GROUP01 3 encrypted auth sha SHA-PASSWORD priv des56 DES-PASSWORD

The previous config was this:

snmp-server enable traps

snmp-server group GROUP01 3 priv read VIEW access USER01

snmp-server host 172.16.0.50 traps version 3 priv MGT02 udp-port 162

snmp-server user USER01 GROUP01 3 auth sha SHA-PASSWORD priv des56 DES-PASSWORD

snmp-server view VIEW 1.3.6 included

Neither of these configs works with Orion. I have the screenshots of the Orion config. I have re-entered the password for both devices, but no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Network Recommendations Customer Data Request

Greeting SolarWinds Network Community,

The SolarWinds engineering organization is looking for a few volunteers to help us on a research project for the betterment of all mankind.

What do we need?

Your Orion diagnostics - specifically your TopologyConnections table, Nodes* tables, VIM_* tables, and Interfaces tables. (located in the DB folder of your diagnostics)

The results of this query from your Netflow database (queried through SWIS)

SELECT SourceIP, DestinationIP, SUM(Bytes) as Totalbits
FROM Orion.Netflow.Flows
WHERE TimeStamp > ADDDAY(-1, GETUTCDATE())
GROUP BY SourceIP, DestinationIP

You can download and install SWQL Studio to your computer to execute and export the results. https://github.com/solarwinds/OrionSDK/releases

We are trying to keep this data as anonymous as possible so that we aren't looking at anything you would consider private. Thus we are really just looking at IP addresses and Node IDs.

When do we need it by?

We are looking for candidates before the end of November 2016.

What makes a good candidate?

  1. You own NPM, NTA, and probably SAM.
  2. You are monitoring servers in your Orion system.
  3. You are getting netflow for your internal network traffic with extra bonus points for traffic internal to your VM hosts.
  4. You have virtual machines, hosts, and data centers monitored by your Orion installation.
  5. You have topology data in your Orion database that accurately represents your network topology. (If not then we can work around this if you have a diagram of your network)
  6. You have lots of network traffic.
  7. You run multi server applications in your network (e.g. a web server that accesses a database server, a distributed micro service application, a highly available, disaster recoverable application)
  8. You want solarwinds to analyze your network and give you recommendations to optimize your network/server deployments.

How will you get the data to us?

We can just use leapfile and the existing ways that SolarWinds support uses to get diagnostics from you today.

https://exchange.leapfile.com/fts/drop/custom/upload/Start.jsp

Type: support@solarwinds.net in the text box for uploading

Upload your diagnostics and query results CSV file.

Tag you upload with note "SolarWinds Research"

Private message me when you have uploaded content and I will communicate back and forth with you over email.

What will you get?

The research team is going to produce an analysis of your network topology and the behavior of flows through your network and make recommendations on how to improve your network deployment.

Thwack Points! The thwack team says that they will help me make this worth your while in thwack points.

What will we do with your data?

We will not share your data or results with anyone but you.

We will not distribute your data to any other partners.

We simply want to understand better the topology of our customers and the data flow across their networks.

Questions?

Please private message me if you are interested or have any questions. Or just reply to this thread and I'll PM you.

Scope of alert - Show list - Bug or bad UI design?

$

Hello.

In NPM 11.5 with the new web based alerts what's the scope of "Show list" that appears under the "scope of alert" section? The way the UI is displayed suggests that when you click "Show list" it should only show objects for the scope of the alert. But it's actually taking in to account the trigger condition too.

Capture.PNG

In the above example I'm expecting that when I click on "Show list" it should show node objects that match the "All objects where" condition. But it's also evaluating the trigger condition. So I'm unable to test the scope, unless I clear the trigger condition first.

If this is expected the UI probably needs to be changed because to me when I click "Show list" I'm expecting only the alert scope to be evaluated. But this seems more like a bug?

High Availability Deployment

I set up a new HA server and when i went to create a new HA pool in High Availability Deployment Summary it is showing 3 servers:

Server 1 - my main poller

Server 2 - the new server that I set up today using the HA installer

Server 3 - an old instance of my main poller that is no longer active (this was used as an interim server whilst i rebuild my main poller for NPM12)

when i set up the pool, solarwinds weirdly assigned all my licences to server 3 and telling me the HA pool was unlicensed, is there a way i can remove this? i have looked in the engines table in the DB but its not listed.

any ideas how i can get rid so that SW doesn't assign the dead server licences?

Calling All Arista Geeks!

We're working on some device support improvements around Arista. To ensure broad coverage, we'd like to get as many SNMP walks as possible to verify functionality against.  If you have Arista gear that is missing hardware health info today, please shoot me an SNMP walk!  Hardware health includes power supply health and voltage, fan status and speed, and temperature.

Our very own SNMP walk tool outputs in a format that can be used by tooling we've built to automatically test compatibility.  For that reason, I'd ask you use that tool specifically to take the walk.  Instructions here.  You can upload here.

Thanks!

ping node from NPM

Hi all,

how can you make Solarwinds NPM ping a host device in steps of 30sec and ping 10 concecutive times?

Im currently using SmokePing because I cannot seem to get Solarwinds to tell me when the device is not pingable when something happens to the link. I have the node status polling set to 10sec and callect statistics to 1minute and those are the lowest settings possible...

Can't this be further customized for critical devices that are not SNMP based?

I had 2 outages this morning, which Smokeping told me exactly what time and how many packets lost, yet solarwinds never alerted me, no logs, nothing. As if nothing ever happened...>?

Thanks

Custom Table Not Showing All Data...

$

Looking for a little assistance here.  I have created a view for a location.  In that view I have added a 'Custom Table' resource.  The custom table is set to display the nodes that are associated with this location.  When I view the custom table there is a note in blue text at the bottom that reads

"This Resource Doesn't Show All Data'   Has anyone seen this before?  Am I using the wrong resource for displaying the nodes?

The reason I am using the custom table is because when the table is displayed the nodes listed in the table aren't active links and can't be clicked on and drilled into.

Last Events Filtered for Orion 9.5

Anyone else having issues getting NPM to map out the topology correctly?

$

What is the minimum requirements for a node to be able to discover populate the NPM Network Topology Map fields?

On both nodes I checked all of the routing options, and layer 2 and layer 3 topology. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

What are the mechanics behind this?

When it doesn't work I can't connect the nodes together in Orion Network Atlas.

Any suggestions?
